I took advantage of the Shanghai points offer, and have outgoing flights on the 9th of March.

How soon can I choose my seats for this flight, in order to get some with ample leg room?

I took advantage of the points offer to Chicago and tried, without luck, to find online where I could choose seats for the trans Atlantic portion. I called Eurobounus and they booked the seats for me. The women I spoke to didn't know if I could have done this online, but she was very helpful getting my requested seats. Unfortunately, all the emergency row seats were booked up.

If you you have a connecting flight within Europe, you'll have to wait until 22 hours before the flight to choose the seats for that flight online.

Just checked at lufthansa.com and saw my seat reservations and the possibility to change them.

Strange that SK customers have to go to LH's website to choose seats on SK. One would think that SK would want that functionality on their own website, if only to save the labor costs of having to do it manually for customers that call.

I tried that and the booking comes up but there is no "choose a seat" function. Could be cause this an economy award ticket.

I took advantage of the Chicago offer as well and had the same problem. But I used LH's My Bookings and could choose seats with no problems what so ever. But I agree, it seems odd that you should have to use another airlines site to choose a seat..

Thanks for the replies.I can confirm that on awards tickets (at least mine) you can't book seats yourself.

Also called SAS office who booked seats for me - all good seats were already taken, I think he mentioned that they had been reserved for SAS employees/relatives or something, but not sure.

I think you misunderstood that. It's first come, first served, except for a limited number of exit row seats/bassinet seats. And March 9 is rather soon, so it's not surprising if many seats are occupied by now, since most people with reservations also have reserved seats.
