I'm planning on taking my family to Cherry Blossom Festival April 7-8 (sat-sun).
Do you guys/gals know if I can find free whole day/overnight parking around Crystal City and Smithsonian?

Unless you know someone who lives in Crystal City who's willing to let you use their garage space/driveway, no. I'm not saying you won't find it. I'm saying there is otherwise none to be found.

You do know that DC has a fairly public transportation system, right? Parking is tight in DC on a normal day, don't even think of parking/driving anywhere near the Mall during the festival.

On weekends, you can park in the Crystal City garages for free; there's a thread here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/washington-d-c-including-baltimore/1311613-crystal-city-overnight-weekend-parking.html) with info. Similarly, I know that on Sundays metered parking on some streets in Southwest is free, like on L'Enfant Promenade (10th St SW), which has a pedestrian bridge over to East Potomac Park/Hains Point.

However, I can't guarantee anything about the cherry blossoms. We've had a very warm winter, so the blossoms will come early -- barring a late hard freeze that would kill the buds. If they are in bloom, about a million other people will also be circling around looking for free parking.

* edited: went by L'Enfant and saw that free parking is now only on Sundays

Plenty of free parking in DC on Sunday if you get there early ... not free on Saturday, though.

You'll have better luck parking in Crystal City and metroing in. Traffic/Parking is crazy during the Cherry Blossoms.
