Enigma

I will be spending March in Brazil. Internal flights are booked (Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires) so now I am in the process of looking for accommodation which seems fairly pricey compared to what I'm used to in Europe (I know, I know, currency fluctuations and all).
From people who have been through this before, did you have a strategy that worked for you to find decent, affordable hotels? Did you use the 'normal' route of booking.com and the like? Or deviate to sites such as AirBnB and Wimdu? Or perhaps was it a time where you found that using existing hotel points was the only reasonable way to go? (assuming you had them)
Any tips appreciated! I don't need pampering - just a decent bed in a room with hot water, and a lock that works! :)
Thanks!
