I will be traveling with my 14 year old daughter.
I do not like tours, I like to adventure on my own, or with a single tour guide. We will take the ferry from Tarifa to Taniger, when we arrive into Taniger, I want to walk from the port to a hotel. Do you have any hotels you recommend we walk to from the port?
I will then hire a tour guide at the hotel to take my daughter and I around for the day. What do you think?
Thank you for your help and time. Jim
I can recommend you Hotel Solazur. Conveiniently located at the boulevard (corniche) on walking distance from the port. Stayed there a few years ago, and was impressed by it. I don't recall what a paid for a room, but i can remember it was good value for money. It's recommended to inform for a guide at your hotel, saves you a lot of hassle. Btw if you are prone to get seasick take some pills with you because the sea can be rough around the Gibraltar straight.
As far as walking from a port, I vaguely remember recently reading somewhere that they're moving to a new port and that there's a bus to the city center. Check tripadvisor for details.

The OP says he is going from Tarifa, from there he should still be able to get a ferry to Tangier propper. TangierMed is the new port further to the east, you would need onward transport from there.
All ferries from Tarifa arrive in the old port of Tanger. Only some ferries from Algeciras ans Gibraltar arriver in Tanger MED port.

I am still trying to figure out if this is worth a day trip while I am in southern Spain? What do you think?

Well, it would certainly enable you to say you had set food on Africa.
As a day trip.... erm. What do you want to get out of it?
