Just received an email solicitation from Club Carlson, to which I'm going to respond most favorably!

Bravo to the Freddies, to all who are making them happen again, and to Club Carlson in 2011!

Oh, it's been a long history. But a short version is that many years ago, the founder of FlyerTalk (and now MilePoint) Randy Peterson began a travel awards program driven by travelers. Awards would be based on an open voting process, and be in several categories -- e.g., hotels, air etc., and also by region, and then by a finer breakdown to comparable (not apples and oranges) travel slices/entities. He named the awards "the Freddies" in honor and in the spirit of Freddie Laker, an icon in low-cost air travel across the pond; Freddie founded Laker Airlines. The annual awards involved an annual awards night, to which many FlyerTalkers, and, importantly, travel industry senior execs, showed up. There was a niche, and Mr. Peterson's magic and obviously a lot of work made it happen.

A couple of years ago, Mr. Peterson decided to end the awards. (And not long afterwards, he moved on from FlyerTalk to create MilePoint.) A number of people long involved with FlyerTalk - and more recently with starting MilePoint - wanted to keep the concept going, so they set up a foundation to run the "Frequent Traveler Awards", intending to revive the Freddies per se, if possible. Well, they're ba-aack. ^

NB: This is all from the outside looking in! I'm certain that others can give a more full and interesting discussion.
