Well that depends on the infrastructure they build to link it to the city...

Isn't seriperumbudur where Rajiv Gandhi was killed? Perhaps another airport that can be named after a Gandhi...!!

Yep, the samose sure are good, but I sure would like an arcade. Maybe in the new terminal currently being built at Meenambakkam.

About the distance from Sriperumbuddur compared to Meenambakkam from central Chennai, with the Port-Maduravoyal Expressway being built and increasing traffic on Anna Salai, but no plans to sort that out soon Sriperumbuddur will be just 40 mins away from Chennai Central - in peak traffic hour its taken me around an hour to get from there to Meenambakkam (compared to non-peak time of 40 mins)

That highway ride is fast..just till Poonamallee. After that its gruelling city traffic to wherever you want to go. (unless your destination is close to one of the later highway exits).

I agree it can be quite fast at times. But, most of the times, I have experienced much longer times to get to areas such as T.Nagar, etc.

And I definitely agree that traffic on Anna Salai is becoming really really bad.
Even from the current airport, it can take a while to get to T.Nagar if you try to achieve this at 5PM!!!

The caption in the small picture attached to the article says:

(The proposed second airport for Chennai, at Sriperumbudur, will have a runway, a terminal building, approach radar and an air traffic control unit.)

I know that airports exist that have no approach radar, but airports without a runway, a terminal building and an atc unit? At any rate, this one will have them all, wow! :)

Yeah but in India, it might as well be 400 km

Details:
I have done all three journeys, KUL-KL City Centre and Sriperumbuddur area - Chennai City Centre and MAA-Chennai City Centre.

KUL-KL City Centre - 60km - 6 lane motorways (or expressways as Indians prefer), 50 mins.

Sriperumbuddur-Chennai City Centre - 40km - 4/6 lane highways - 40 mins in non-rush, over an hour in rush time. However, with the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway opening in 2013, rush hour traffic will decrease significantly, and it will take under 40 minutes in non-rush hour, even if the airport is built.

MAA-Chennai City Centre - 20km - 6 lane urban highways - same current times as Sriperumbuddur but no plans to reduce traffic other than Metro line.

Bhai, or Anna since we're talking about Chennai, each square kilometre of India is different to the other.
