I flew VA LAX-MEL the other day in Business class, I'm a regular on the UA service but only second time on VA international.

- On boarding, purser came to my seat and greeted me like I was a 5 year old child (speaking "at" me & over articulating each and every word). Quite strange frankly.

- Woken up by cabin crew gossiping in the front galley (very audible from row 3), 5 hrs before landing, I asked them to keep the noise down, then heard instead the clanging of cutlery and dishes being "moved around" in the galley for 15+ minutes

I find UA's service pretty average, but never so condescending. And fwiw, VA seats are no better than UA's in business...

Personally, I have never been pleased with VA Business.

That doesn't sound great :( would definitely write in some feedback about it.
I flew a few times in J last year and the service was great .. would be a crying shame if the service standards have dropped :(

Crew gossiping can happen (and happens!) on any airline (including UA - and since they have removed all the curtains on B777s, I can normally hear all the gossips while seating on my preferred 8J /long-haul config/). IMHO the worst and the loudest "Galley FM' is on BA, though. Let VA know, that you was unhappy with the F/A performance!

For the 'articulation' part, I think you might be overreacting. Aussie accent is sometimes difficult to understand and I (I am not from Oz) actually appreciate when they make some effort to speak clearly.
