What do you use for a razor when traveling? I've away from home at least three (3) nights a week (many times moving between places). I've never found a way to repack and use a disposable or a non-disposable cartridge so go through a ton of these. Is there a better way?

The cheap disposables always leave me cut up. I'd rather not use them.

I always travel with a 4 cartridge pack for a Mach 3 or 4 and when I finish shaving the cartridge goes right back in the plastic holder. It works great and they have never popped out of the holder during travel.

I also travel with a Mach 3 razor, but why the concern over multiple cartridges? I get a good week out of one of their outrageously expensive cartridges. Surely you don't dispose of these after two or three shaves?

Actually, I've been pitching them after one use. At home, I easily get a week or more. They just don't seem reusable after putting them back in my razors travel case wet.

Putting them back in the original cartridge holder is a great idea.

Hi,

I have a Mach 3 Turbo razor also ( cartridge refills are now £15 for 8 but I get at least a week out of them ( more if i do not shave at the weekends!:))

When travelling I take a spare one for the fortnight and put them in the original holder before putting them in my toiletry bag.

I use my regular razor. Leave it out till dry, as you'd at home, and pack in something like a zip bag.

I've been using the the cryogentically tempered razors from greatrazors.com. Specifically I use their modified Sensor Excels, and while their technology sounds questionable to some people, I am absolutely convinced the blades last up 2 to 3 times longer (I get about 20+ shaves out of one; and I have pretty tough growth).

Been a customer of their's for at least six years. Regularly I try other store bought blades (Sensor Excels and Mach 3's), and my results are consistently re-confirmed.

Of course, YMMV.

Whether I'm at home or traveling, I shave in the shower. As soon as I am through with the razor, I make sure to place it outside the shower area (top of the toilet tank is usually close by). Two more things will help. If a blow dryer is available, run it across the blades for 30 seconds or so. Then I put the razor in my travel bag near one of those silica gel packs which attract moisture.

I can get at least a week out of most good disposable razors taking those precautions.

I've been so lucky (compared to people in previous threads here) as I get a couple of months usually out of a cartridge in my Fusion. I rinse it off, let it dry if there's time, and will usually wrap it in a piece of paper so the blades don't get bent when I toss it in with all the other stuff. In the travel bag, I've changed the blade way more often because they were damaged in the bag than because they were no longer doing their job, so now I try to protect them a bit.

If you google

travel razor holders

you will find options for plastic covers to protect the blades.

At home I use an Edwin Jagger double-edge. Better shave, and the best DE blades are much, much less expensive. But DE blades are an issue in TSA screening, so I use a Fusion when flying. It is always packed in my carry-on with a full or not 4-pk of the blades.

I have an upcoming 5-day business trip and I was just thinking about how to solve this problem. I don't want to buy a pack of 5 razors, when I only need one.

Well, if you aren't checking bags you could bring the EJ in carryon and put in a fresh blade for 5 days. If it pops up in screening hopefully the blade is all that's confiscated. Happened to me that way once, but decided for the future I didn't want to risk losing the EJ//

Same here - just snap the cartridge back into the pack - I always travel with a full pack, working my way down. Never dry them, they always seem fine when I go back to them. I reckon I get about 15 shaves per blade.

Also - King of Shaves Oil - best travel shave lotion. I use the gel at home.

I have done that many times, and my blade has been confiscated each time I was stopped. My EJ has never been confiscated, but I had to teach them how to unscrew the razor as I was not allowed to touch it.

After enough times, I decided it wasn't worth the stopping effort.

Interesting factoid: I carry my EJ disassembled, and one time, I was stopped because they said it looked like a bullet.

I use a Schick Hydro 5 which I carry in the original cradle that the razor came in. I use a rubber band to keep the blade and razor where they ought to be. No need to carry multiple blades. Keeping the blades protected seems to do the trick. A single cartridge lasts for more than 2 weeks.

Also carry a Kent travel brush and a tiny tube of Wilkinson shaving cream.

One trick that i learned to keep razer blades sharp is to dunk them in alcohol after use. It displaces the water and prevents rust which is ultimately what dulls the blade. I use each blade (Mach 3) for months without issue.

tfar
Feb 17, 12, 12:27 pm
I have read up on that subject a great deal (there are razor forums, believe it or not) and done my own empirical tests.

Leaving the cartridge wet is not good. Three possibilities:

1. Simply dry the blade with your towel by gently beating it against the towel. then air dry.

2. Place blade in alcohol. Not practical for travel use because alcohol is a liquid and flammable.

3. Place blade in oil (olive oil will do nicely).

All of the above will prevent oxidation which will make the blade last longer.

Other methods to make the blade last longer include buying cryo-treated blades or buying coated blades. The latter is simple and cheaper because the Schick Quattro Titanium blades are coated and available anywhere. They also come with a simple slide-on blade protector. This means weight savings because you don't have to carry the bigger 4-piece pack.

A Schick Quattro Titanium blade lasts about 30 shaves for me. I am not kidding you. I used Gilette before but these SQT blades last way longer and the shave is just as good.

Moreover, Schick has a razor with a built-in long-hair trimmer. This is very handy for grooming sideburns and around the ears. It is powerful enough to even keep chest, leg and arm pit hair in shape.

This razor with its trimmer, the long-lasting blades and the practical blade cover plus a good soap (dry, thus no need for 311 baggie) is the best travel solution I found.

Try it out. You won't be disappointed. :)

Also - King of Shaves Oil - best travel shave lotion. I use the gel at home.

After I switched to this, I will never be able to switch back. The oil does displace water, and I've found my blades last longer. I buy online in sets of 4-5 bottles and look for a coupon. Note the "Kinexium" type is much better than others, and has a nice little pump too.

This maybe why my blades seem to survive being thrown back into the plastic container - the residual coating of oil from KOS.

This maybe why my blades seem to survive being thrown back into the plastic container - the residual coating of oil from KOS.

I don't think the plastic container has anything to do with an early demise of a blade. It's really oxidation that dulls the blade more than the cutting action the blade has to perform. That's why the three methods cited above will help your blades last longer.

Obviously blades are engineered to only last so long. On an ordinary Gillette Sensor Excel blade I get about 8 shaves, rather less. But on the Schick Quattro Titanium I get easily 30. On a Gillette Fusion I get around 10. Plus the SQT gives me the best and smoothest shave of the three.

Problem with most shaving oil (I've tried normal and Kinexium KOS) is that they do clog up the multi-blade razors. It's quite yucky and not very hygienic for hair to get stuck in there, I'd say. Solutions: Clean the razor with a toothpic but that will dull the blade. Or shave with a normal foam and then rinse. That'll also clean it.

Advantage of oil is that it's easy to use and that no aftershave lotion/balm is needed because the oil is already moisturizing and calming the skin.

I agree that there can be a build-up. After experimentation, I found that shaving with very hot water with as much pressure as available from the tap does the job for me with cleaning. A hard tap or two on the sink also dislodges gunk.

I never bother drying the blades before clicking them back into the case - but the hot water propbably dries quickly, like a dishwasher.

That's certainly the truth! I always give the razor a "blast" with the high pressure from the shower head when I'm done, and have on occasion resorted to blowing through the blade. No joke.

I've found as long as I don't use too much oil, it doesn't really clog. Also the latest Kinexium is silicone-based and not oil-based, so it's not as thick, and doesn't clog the blade as much as it just makes it so the shaved-off stuff sticks to the blade a bit. That's what attracts me to that as opposed to the older KOS oils. I wonder if anyone else manufactures a silicone-base oil, possibly US-based? This stuff is hard to find here.

I use a Fusion Power at home and on the road. i just take the batteries out of the travel one so that it's not accidentally activated. I buy bulk packs of cartridges on e-bay so travel with a 4-pack until all 4 are used up and I put in a new 4-pack. bigger pain for me is finding travel-size Edge gel or Gilette gel.

It's all so dependent on your skin sensitivity, hair type, hair shape, and so on. I have extremely curly hair, very sensitive skin, and thick bristles. I get about 10-15 days out of a Fusion before the razor burn increases, so I replace them.

I just switched razors to the Dollar Shave Club razors. I've been using them for three days and love them.

I use a Merkur HD with feather blades. I carry-on and have never been questioned about it (knock on wood) after 20+ international roundtrips in the past year. I always carry a backup blade in the zipper pouch of my dopp kit where band-aids and stuff are in case they ever do ask about it. That way I can just happily let them take the blade in the razor and move on. I carry it in a cheap leather case I got from classicshaving.com or a similar site.

I used to carry cheap disposables but I hated those so I thought I'd just try out carrying the HD.

Also, for good, small containered shave oils to take with you, check out Shave Secret at Wal-Mart. I hate Wal-Mart so I stock up once a year or so.

Both figures (Schick QT lasting for only 2 shaves and G. Fusion lasting for 20-30 shaves) seem to be VERY extreme to me and rather the opposite of what I am experiencing. I get way better mileage (factor 2x or 3x) out of Schick Quattro Titanium. It will easily last me 20-30, whereas a Fusion will only go 7-10 shaves.

Side question: How many shaves do you get out of a Feather blade in the Merkur, rodubls? Also, how much does the Merkur weigh?

That's interesting. Gillette is playing catch-up with Schick. Try the Quattro Titanium. I am almost certain you will get more shaves without razor burn.

I have a pretty heavy beard and do 3-4 passes when I shave. If you shave every single day, you might go through them much quicker.

The HD weighs...maybe 3-4 ounces. Being actual steel makes it pretty hefty compared to the plastic Mach whatevers, but not uncomfortable or anything like that.

Indeed any alcohol will do (should probably be around 50% vol.) but normally, when you shave, you have after shave or cologne close. Of course, at home, just use rubbing alcohol or whatever else is cheap.

I also use a balm as after shave because it is nicer on the skin. Mine is unscented (Nivea Sensitive). Then I use a cologne for the fragrance.

Although, especially for traveling, it is quite nice to just use a fragrant balm. One less thing to carry and the smell won't be so strong which is nice for people who may be sitting very close to you in the plane and are perhaps sensitive to strong colognes.

rodubls, thanks for the info. That's quite good for one blade and doing 3-4 passes. I didn't think one could get such good mileage out of the Feather blades. I shall try that. Have never shaved with that type of razor before. Could be an interesting experiment. I'll be careful. ;)

As far as protection of the razor blade is going for ordinary safety blades like Gillette and Schick, there is usually a little slide-over cover that slides directly onto the blade. Minimal bulk and weight and it works well. I don't see any reason to go for anything bigger and heavier.

What good does the handle holder do when traveling? It is a display device for use on a supermarket shelf. When you travel you most likely pack the thing in a bag. Then the handle holder will slide around while holding the handle. Great!:D It is just one more thing to take up space and cost weight and clutter the sink or bag. If you are afraid the transport will break off the cartridge, take it off before you put the razor in the bag. Problem solved.

If one is a neat-freak a kit with compartments and elastic loops will help keep stuff organized. Me, I just use little ziploc baggies for air travel. The nice kit I break out only for car travel or when I want to impress someone (female) who shares a bathroom. ;)

How does the Hydro5 work for you? I read some reviews on Amazon. One of them said that one must let the moisturizing cartridge dry before packing it or else it gets all gooey and unusable. (For those who don't know, the Hydro 5 has a lubricating/moisturizing gel pack attached behind the blade).

That doesn't sound like it's good for travel when often you need to shave in the morning and then pack and leave immediately.

I've been DE shaving (and collecting, over 230 vintage Gillettes) for a while now but just take a Sensor Excel when traveling. Like is too short to hassle with arranging blades at the destination and it makes coming home to my full kit even more enjoyable!

That's a sympathetic attitude. I actually enjoy the temporary restrictions I incur when traveling. It makes me appreciate my own bed, my own stereo, my art or my watches just the more, when I'm back home. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. :)

That said, I found the Schick QT so good, that I now use it all the time. It's simply the best razor I've used so far and I also started with Sensor and Sensor Excel decades ago.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Do it properly, get a decent old fashioned razor with just a single blade, good soap/cream and a brush - then you will truly enjoy a great shave!

Blokes are not convinced when you first tell them this but once they start and get the hang of it they rarely look back. The money you save you can use on travel goodies :)

I'm gonna try it out, I promise. But not because I need more travel goodies. I got enough of those. :D

I just think that the shave won't be much better. When I shave with the Schick QT (reads cutie on purpose I bet), my skin is so smooth, my girlfriends are jealous. ;) And I don't need to shave for another 24 hours at least.

The blades cost about $2 each. I get 30 shaves from each blade. So that's 7 cents per shave. I really don't need to save more. ;) It might even be cheaper than buying Feather blades.

BTW, I did try a really good Dovo straight razor. Ouch! Maybe it wasn't sharp enough or I wasn't good enough at it, but boy did that hurt. And the result was not good, either.

I use a Merkur HD with feather blades. I carry-on and have never been questioned about it (knock on wood) after 20+ international roundtrips in the past year.

2 flights after this I got pulled aside, haha. Just had to take out the blade and head on my way.

Trac II with heavy handle off ebay. (no problem with carry-on)

But now I'm trying out the Sensor 2-blade since it pivots (so does the Atra)

3 blades and more just tears up my skin.

The feather blades are fantastic. I use taylor of old bond street sandalwood shaving soap at home.

On the road I use Proraso shaving soap and a brush along with gillete fushion. The Proraso soap is dry so no issue with TSA.

Question: I haven't raveled with the Old Taylor Sandalwood soap (which is more like a cream), does TSA stop anyone with this as a liquid/gel?

That's interesting. I have a Old Taylor of Bond Street Sandalwood shaving soap and it looks dry to me. Does yours come in a plastic container? I just add water to form a lather.

That is because I have the cream. (that just sounds weird). I have the saving cream version, and yes it is in a plastic tub/container.

Yes, that sounds weird. :)

And yes, that's the same one I have. It's fairly dry. You still have to add water to lather it up, but I'll go check when I get home to make sure it says "CREAM," but the tub looks exactly the same.

Those are two separate products:

My blades cost about $0.10 each, so one more reason to switch over to double edge shaving! Granted, a DE blade will not last for 30 shaves, but overall you will still be saving money.

Okay. I just got home and looked at my "cream," and yes, it does say "CREAM." It looks exactly like what you've linked. I do have to add water to lather it up. It's not bar soap.

Also, I've traveled with it a lot (even internationally) and not TSA nor any foreign security has ever stopped me, but they're not known for being consistent.

Thanks! I love the sandalwood shaving cream and just ordered the shaving soap. I will let you know how it is.

Thanks! I've since switched to the Proraso shaving soap because I think it doesn't smell like sandalwood. :)

I was using Castle and Forbes (Lime) Shaving Cream--its been my favorite. Based on some comments in this thread, I tried shaving oil, and have been using Oliveology for travel...and even at home much of the time. Very clean and comfortable--and I don't need to use after shave balm....since you don't have shaving cream, its pretty novel to actually be able to see all the hairs you are shaving off.

I can easily go for about a week on one Mach III cartridge. I am further saving money by picking them up cheap - Gillette sells a 12-pack in India for the equivalent of $14. I am now a supplier to many of my colleagues who live in the US or Europe :D

That's still $1.17 per blade. That's 16 cent per shave for seven shaves a week or 19.5 cents if you can only get six shaves out of a blade.

The Schick Quattro Titanium costs $2.50 per blade. But I get 25-30 shaves out of each. That means each shave is LESS than 10 cents. And the shave is a good bit better (I did try the Mach 3).

No more provisioning schemes for your friends and everybody gets a better and cheaper shave.

Just sayin'... ;)
