The subject says it all. Which Scandic propery can you FT-people recommend in Gothenburg. Ability to get upgrade (I'm HH Gold) is a factor as well.

I've been to Gothenburg many times but unfortunately I've never stayed at any Scandic. My business partner once stayed at the Opalen and he was satisfied. When in Gothenburg, I always stay at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia. This was formerly the Sheraton and it is the best hotel in town. It offers very competive rates and it is even often less expensive than the Scandics. My business partner came to the Radisson once and was impressed, and told me that the rooms at the Radisson are more luxurious and larger than the ones at the Scandic. Also the Atrium at this hotel quite nice. Even George W Bush stayed there when he was in Gothenburg last year!

Never stayed at any of these places but as far as locations go, here is what you get...

Rubinen - right in the middle Avenyn and all the restaurants and bars. Not in a business district but good all year round for leasure travel.

Opalen - by the big convention center. It is quite a walk to downtown.

Crown Göteborg - by the central station and close to my old office!

Europa Göteborg - inside the biggest shopping center in Sweden and close to the central station.

Some people would say "Best location in Town".

It is about 5 minutes to the Avenyn! Best choice in location if you want to do Liseberg, Scandinavias largest theme park!

... and not far from the Radisson SAS Scandinavia!

A really nice shopping center even. Check it out on www.nordstan.se (http://www.nordstan.se)

Any more thoughts on this topic since I am going there soon. There's also a couple of suburban Scandics, which may be more convenient on my business trip. Anything near GOT?

Unfortunately, the Radissons appear to be a notch above "premium" Scandics from last weekends experience in Stockholm and CPH.

Is there any good Swedish hotel booking website? The rates on the Scandic site are not that great.

As far as I know, there isn't any Scandic near Landvetter. The only hotel I know near from GOT is the Landvetter Airport Hotel to be found on http://www.landvetterairporthotel.se

How is this to be understood??? Do you mean the rates??? Or the quality??? If it is for quality, forget the HH pointes and stay at the Radisson. Also check out their website http://www.radissonsas.com for special internet rates.

on www.getawaybyscandic.com (http://www.getawaybyscandic.com) there are sometimes pretty good prices.

I am trying to dedide which Scandic to book in Gothenburg when I travel there with my significant other (we are in our 20's). After searching I can see the Rubinen is the best but it is not available. What would be the next best Scandic in the city...preferably with some exciting stuff going on in the area or in the hotel itself (i.e. nightlife, pubs, restaurants). Anyone out there in flyertalk land who can help me out? Thanks

The Opalen was nice, but it was a couple of blocks off the main pedestrian strip. I recall that they had some rooms with names on them indicating (perhaps) that the named famous people had stayed there. We didn't get named rooms http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

If you are going between 20/12 and 11/1 2004 then don´t forget about the SH40 promo code. Rate is 250SEK per person per night (which is REALLY good), just book at www.scandic-hotels.com (http://www.scandic-hotels.com) and enter "SH40". Please remeber that this rate will not entitle you to any miles or stay credits in HHonors.

Too bad Opalen is fully booked. I guess Scandic Crown would be the second best choise (can anyone more familiar to this town confirm?). I think that one is very close to Radisson SAS Scandinavia (which is a great hotel, recommend it).

Have a nice stay in Sweden!

I stayed at the Europa in July. It was within walking distance of pretty much everything, even Liseberg. The hotel itself wasn't too exciting but the bar and its seating area was pretty nice.

Any recent experiences for Gothenburg Scandic’s? I have a few stays coming up here in the next 2 weeks and have previously only stayed at the Radisson. Now I’m on the triple points promo so naturally I would like to stay at a Scandic this time.
Scandic Crown looks nice with its newly renovated Superior floor!

I had reservations for a suite at the Scandic Crown Gothenburg for 6 months, made and guaranteed as normal through the Hilton site.

After massive unrelated travel difficulties (LHR/BA/Baggage, 'nuff said?), we arrived at Scandic Crown at midnight. No room. They said they couldn't accommodate us because they full due to the Gothia Cup Soccer Tournament (duh, thats why we were there). They said that they canceled our reservation when we did not arrive by 6pm. I had the printed confirmation showing that the room was guaranteed and indeed would be charged if we did not cancel by 6pm. After a lot of arguing (no mod or gm that time of night), they walked us to SAS Radisson, its now 1am or later.

When we went back to the Crown the next day, the staff on duty then said they were wondering what had happened to us as they were expecting us the previous day!

I will write to the hotel and to DD but, this being a Scandic, not sure what good that will do.

The lesson learned is that SAS Radisson is light years nicer than Scandic Crown. Scandic Crown rooms are awful. Ever see a BATHroom with a 3' x 6' plate glass window to the hotel room in it?

Anyone going to Gothenburg might like to know this.

Those kind of bathrooms are quite common at Scandic hotels and other places in Scandinavia. Nothing surprising about that.

I've had a few instances where my guaranteed room showed up as not guaranteed despite what I had in my hand or was told over the phone.

The Radisson SAS hotels in Scandinavia are better than the Scandics, but then again the price usually reflects that too.

Many thanks for the info. I have stayed at Scandics in Linkoping and Stockholm with no problems, and SAS in Stockholm and Gothenburt. You are right, SAS are better. I have never seen the picture window bathroom before. Any idea about whats behind it, or is it just another American too wound up in privacy issues?

None of the Scandics in central Stockholm has given me a room with such a bathroom window, but Scandics across other parts of Sweden have as has the Gothia Towers hotel in Gothenburg and Rival in Stockholm. Why? No definitive answer from me on that one.

Well, you probably asked for "a room with a view." Be more specific next time. ;)
