Well here is the planning thread for the 2013 SIN DO. I've got a lot of details to plug in, but here is the sparse outline. I've already got my hotel booked and will be getting a flight in a few days.

Pre-Do: If anyone wants to grab dinner from 1/13 to 1/16 infoworks will be in town early and will happily meet up with other FTers for dinner at a kopitiam in Chinatown that I like.

Thursday: Dinner at 8:00 and drinks for those that arrive early.
Sun with Moon Japanese Dining, around Wheelock Plaza
6 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore

Possible mini-bar party afterwards.

Also, depending on interest, possibly a late night hawker center to meet up with those arriving at midnight. This will be at Newton at Midnight.

Friday:

Lunch at 1:00 PM: Glory Catering
139 East Coast Road Singapore 428829

Drinks at 7:00 PM: This will be at Mogambo (#3 Canton Street, Boat Quay, Singapore). It's the same place as last year which had a good setup outside for everyone to meetup.
Hawker Center Trip at 11:00 PM: This will be at La Pau Sat, which is different than the last 3 or 4 years. This place is pretty happening at night. This is going to be on a rough timeline with epople heading over anytime from 11-12:30, but for those in town ahead of time, I would suggest if we all aim for getting there no later than 11:30 PM so we can grab enough tables.

Saturday:
Day Trip to Bintan Island: There are ferries that leave Singapore Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal at 9:10 or 11:10 AM. The return ferry leaves for Singapore at either 3:35 or 5:35. You lose an hour on the way there, so you get into Bintan about 2 hours after you leave. If you would like to go on this side trip, PM me because I'll schedule this around when the most perople will be able to attend. The ferry ticket is $70 SGD for a round trip and the Indonesian visa is $25.

Saturday Lunch (12:30 at DB Bistro Moderne): lowjhg is organizing this. This is located at Marina Bay Sands and the cost is around $25-40 SGD for the main entree.

Afternoon beers at Clark Quay if time permits.

Dinner 8:00 PM: This will be at the Long Beach UDMC East Coast Seafood Center location. Note the address below, because there are two locations that are considered the Long Beach at East Coast Seafood Center...
Long Beach UDMC Seafood Restaurant
1202 East Coast Parkway, #01-04 East Coast Seafood Centre
Tel: 6448 3636

Drinking time at the Grand Hyatt afterwards.

Sunday at 10:00 AM: For a morning event, this will be a different trail than the canopy walk the last two years at MacRitchie Reservoir Park. If anyone is interested in a run there, let me know. I would suggest we all meet up at the Hyatt at 10, and head over from there.

Lunch at 1:00 PM: Muthu's Curry on Race Course Road. I am 90% sure we'll do this, but will post any changes.
Dinner at 8:00 PM: Straits Kitchen at the Grand Hyatt. The cost is around $60SGD for everything.

Monday:
The Post Do in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam begins going from 1/21-1/23.

If you need to be added, PM me. Also, if people want to start sending over hotel and flight details feel free to.
Here is the Google docs spreadsheet you can add yourself to if you are attending. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An9pPF7JRL4cdGpYcGt2RFl5TzJNQ1F0d191RTJla nc#gid=0) I will try keep these lists in synch, but the spreadsheet will be best for tracking details like flights and hotels.

Between 7:30 and 9:00am, exact time TBD we will head out for a Mekong Delta tour/cruise.
There are a number of options for tour length, but expect this to be 8 to 10 hours.
Pricing will very depending on the group size and tour company, but I'm expecting this to be about $80
Depending on the tour we do I expect we will be back in HCMC around 7 at the latest, so dinner will be planned for 8:30 but I'll let you know if it goes later.

Dinner at 8:30 PM: Quan An Vietnames Restaurant
71/5+6 Mac Thi Buoi St | Ho Chi Minh City, District 1

Wednesday, January 23

This is about 5 hours.

After lunch, War Remnants Museum and Saigon Central Market. Possibly Reunification Palace if time permits.
Dinner at There will be a late lunch or dinner to follow depending on when everyone's flights leave.

For Visas you must go through a service to apply for a visa online and have a visa approval letter. PM me for suggestions if needed. There is a $45 stamping fee when you land in Saigon, you need exact change in USD. This has increased from $15. This is for US citizens so verify what it is for your country and the processing time for the online applications is about 3 days.

I'm in! Just booked my flights on UA, arriving late Thursday night and departing Tuesday morning. Been wanting to attend this Do for years and am pumped that it's finally going to happen!

*update: Turns out this is going to be my first-ever longhaul premium cabin flight (yeah, it's just United Business-First, but still...for me, it's a big deal :))! And on ORD-HKG-SIN, no less--21 total hours of flying time to luxuriate and enjoy. SO pumped! I was able to work some magic by purchasing about 25k bonus miles against an upcoming award trip to EZE for a total of $460, which gave me enough to upgrade to Business on the SIN Do trip. Woo hoo!

There are some very tempting CX fares in 'I' class which I may have to use, and have a 'stopover' in SIN.

I have booked said CX flights in 'I' class.

Arrival:
CX178 MEL 0100 - HKG 0710 17 JAN (333 with 'new' J)
CX759 HKG 0910 - SIN 1300 17 JAN (773 with old regional J - we can prey for an equip. change)

Accom:
TBA - If I still have an apartment in SIN, I will stay there... However I am about to be promoted at work, which could affect how long I spend in SIN each month, which in turn may push me back to hotels.

Departure:
Currently booked on the evening of 1/21, with some flexibility, as I will probably just nest another ticket and return to SIN on the morning on 1/22.

I'm envisioning a Thursday dinner for early arrivers. I'm flying LAX-HND-SIN and get in around noon on Thursday.

Also, attendees list will be updated this week.

The DO will be similar to the past events..

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I know I had mentioned this before at the 2012 DO and I think there are some good activities that can be planned in the surrounding areas. Also, for anyone that wants to spend more time in Vietnam it's super cheap to fly to Hanoi or Da Nang.

It will begin on 1/21 and go until 1/23 or 1/24. I have to work on the itinerary to come up with a closing date. I'd recommend holding off on flights for Vietnam until the itinerary is firmed out.

I thought the SGN portion is post-DO (so shouldn't it be starting on 1/20 or 1/21)?

Just booked an award tkt, so it looks like I'm closer to confirmed!;)

Count me as interested. Note that today only (or for a short time anyway), there is extremely good availability in premium cabins on Singapore Airlines for star alliance partner awards. I just booked an award ticket using United miles in first class on Singapore Airlines! I'm a 1k, so I can cancel for free later if I can't make it.

I really want to go, but having already booked my pre-do segments, I was hoping for post-do. It's far enough out that it's only a change fee right now, but I'd rather not pay one if I don't have to. :)

We also had been relying on what had been posted all along about SGN coming after SIN and some of us have been fortunate enough to catch an unusual availability of award tickets that will probably disappear before the night is out that will preclude changing.

I am still assuming that SGN is going to be a post-DO DO and that bschaff1 has made a typo posting "1/14" in milepost #63.

I have until tomorrow evening sometime to cancel without penalty and will do so if we do not hear more from bschaff1 about the confusion. Recommending that we hold off when such an unusual opportunity exists will not cut it for dates must be established and then there can be details. Most of us thought that they were.

Arrival on UA895 early Friday morning 1/18. Joining the flight after a brief layover in HKG so I may well be the only one awake on the plane.

Hotel TBA, still looking for decent rates.

I did not take this option myself but if anyone can route via LAX the new UA 787 is on the board departing on 1/16 to NRT. From there the connection to SIN arrives about the same time on 1/18. All fare classes available.

SGN caught my eye, and I haven't been to SIN for a few years so this seems like a good time for a SINDo repeat! Put me down for Likely for both SIN and SGN (won't know for sure until pretty close in though)

I'm still working on the Post DO events schedule with more to come. The rough schedule is I would suggest taking the following flight to SGN on Monday 1/21...
Jetstar Asia 557 Dep: 2:00PM Arr: 3:05PM

I will add information for Visas for those with US passports. It's submitting a simple form online and bringing the papers emailed to you along with a copy of 2 passport photos. If I recall correctly the fees total around $45. For hotels, my suggestion is the Intercontinental with some excellent corporate rates. I'm going to add all this to post 3 on the front page.

Sentosa isn't really too far away, but it seems like it is because Singapore is so dense, so I would rule that out. If you want to spend time on Sentosa, people have certainly done that during the DO, but I don't remember anyone saying that they were thrilled with the resorts out there.

I believe the the Hyatt is nicer than the Towers. Both will have several to many DOers staying.

If you qualify on stays, you will not be the only person hotel hopping that weekend.

It is hard to give guidance without more information on what you are looking for. Those prices are not so great that *I* would tie myself to them with prepaid rate but I am thinking of what I paid the last two years, not what I could get next year.

Make where you get the most out of your status the first factor. If not going on status, I would take the Hyatt if the price is close to the Sheraton Towers. I've done the first night at the Sheraton the last 3 DOs and moved over to Hyatt. The Sheraton is fine when you arrive dead tired at midnight, but seems like a worn out property about 5 years overdue for a renovation.

The Hyatt staff is either good or indifferent, but I've always found their rooms to be excellent.

Put down Karen2 and Mr Karen2, esp if you do Sumatra. We have tried to get there before but have not been able to put it together. Malaysia we have done.

One note to people with extra time: The Hyatt at Kuantan is great, right on the beach and very inexpensive. Local fish restaurants are right across the street from the hotel, as is McDonald's. Caught more than a few hotel guests sneaking over for breakfast! The wild monkeys will join you on your balcony if you are not careful. We had a terrific time there. If you are not aligned to a chain, Singapore has some very nice upscale hotels.

The Hotel Fort Canning (www.hfcsingapore.com/) is a very nice option. Runs to 290 SGD / night including Taxes. Rate comes with breakfast and wi-fi along with a complimentary club lounge style spread in the lobby lounge in the evening. Last time I was there this was Piper-Heidsick Champagne, unlike the rather pedestrian Chandon (not to be confused with Moët & Chandon) served in the Executive Lounge at the Conrad Singapore. Other benefit is it is not infested with pesky Flyertalkers!

For those staying at Hilton or the Conrad, I see the PR13CB rate works at both now (SGD 210 and 255 / night respectively).

Sheraton Towers, Grand Hyatt, Hilton Singapore... are those the majors you are considering? That area will probably have the highest concentration of Doers but pretty much any hotel on this map would be S$10 taxi to any DO event except East Coast Seafood.

Dinner will be at least 1.5 hours after we get back to the hotels, so plan on 8:00 or 8:30.

Wednesday, January 23
Two options are either the Cu Chi tunnels or an "Unseen Saigon" tour where they will take you through Ho Chi Minh on motorbikes.
Either of these tours are about 5 hours excursions. I've also been looking at options for site seeing in the city such as the Reunification Palace, Saigon Central Market, and other places.
There will be a late lunch or dinner to follow depending on when everyone's flights leave.

Besides that, I'll be posting an updated attendees list and will be posting some ideas for events for those getting in to Singapore by Friday morning.

Here is the schedule for the Post DO portion of the SIN DO. I'm going to be checking with all those confirmed to decide on an event for Wednesday and to get attendance and flight details to figure out a Monday dinner time.

That sounds great! Really excited for it.

Monday, January 21
Fly to SGN. Jetstar is the cheapest option on the flight in the early afternoon.
Dinner at 8:00 PM, this is going to be Vietnamese food, but I'm still deciding on a restaurant.

Tuesday, January 22
Between 7:30 and 9:00am, exact time TBD we will head out for a Mekong Delta tour/cruise.

Please remove me from the confirmed list  Relocating and too much work prevent me from taking the time off to enjoy the Do.
If time permits (and LH or TG have award flights) I might hop over on short notice, though.

That's sad :(

You are not reading this right. The SIN DO will be in SIN.

The post-SIN-DO will be in Saigon.

A few of us are arriving in the wee hours on the 19th and
were wondering how late the Lau Pa Sat nosh would be
going on - i.e. if it was worthwhile cabbing it down there
at 2 to 2:30 am?

There would be food for the hungry ones but not much of a variety unfortunately. Newton Circus would be a safer option for a food centre preference.

For the adventurous ones, do drop by Geylang (used to be known as a red light district) for real local fare.

You may not find much to see in the Reunification Palace unless you are very interested in Vietnamese history. The War Remnants Museum is far more interesting. Unfortunately it isn't well maintained over the years and the photo exhibits are turning yellow.

Thanks, Theytus. I had put forth two suggestions - Newton and sleep; but
another FTer said he was coming in around the same time and that the
calendar said LPS, where one can get decent satays at any hour, though
the selection gets weird later on (a few years ago, some wags ordered me
up I think kidney and lung skewers and were slightly taken aback when I
ate them as though they were filet mignon or something).

Right now it looks as though sleep is the #1 option, as we are in first
from HKG, and chances are we will be fed enough if not spectacularly.

Put me down as maybe. Surprised to see the new gardens by the bay isn't in the itinerary.

The Gardens by the Bay could be added as an optional activity for
those interested.

I was there a week ago, and was impressed. The outdoor gardens are
free, but the (airconditioned) Flower Dome and Cloud Forest Dome have a
fee of S$ 28.00. This fee covers both conservatories. Locals get a discount.
The OCBC Skyway (a 22 meter high elevated "tree-top" walkway) is S$ 5.00 for everybody.

There is also a Garden Cruiser trolley that takes you around to the
most interesting places in case you get tired or overheated from
walking. The fee is S$ 5.00

This whole "excursion" can be combined with a visit to Marina Bay
Sands, for an entirely different experience. There is an elevated
walkway from the Sands hotel to the gardens.

I am pleased to confirm my attendance at this DO.

I will be landing at Changi early Thursday evening. I am not sure where I am staying yet (Particularly Thursday night which seems to have regular business-time SIN rates loaded still). Open to ideas.

I express regret in advance for being unable to attend some of the sessions at the DO as I foresee all manner of unforeseen issues which will require my attendance.

I would be interested in meeting up with anyone with particular specialist expertise in fuel dumps and ICH BRGs. I would also like to meet with anyone with experience in sueing airlines in any jurisdiction. I would be glad to buy you a drink and discuss these matters in more detail.

Finally, I express continued thanks to bschaff1 for his efforts in scheduling this DO, particularly given the arduous amount of drinking it seems to drive him to.

If you like to sit down and chat while having supper, LPS is a good place though as it is quiet especially in the wee hours of the day.

But for good food and people watching, Geylang is the place to go!

Wow Savage25, if I'm glad my work doesn't track the websites I visit because that URL may draw some suspicion.

Anyways, so the schedule is much more firmed up, so check it out. The updates are...
-Day Trip to Bintan (not Batam). This will be on Friday or Saturday subject to what day the most people can make it.
-The Hawker Center on Friday will be La Pau Sat. It's very happening at night, and time for a revisit.
-Dinner will be at Long Beach UDMC Seafood Restaurant, 1202 East Coast Parkway. Note the address because there are two Long Beach restaurants on the East Coast Parkway.
-Sunday morning activities will be at MacRitchie Reservoir Park and we will plan on leaving the Hyatt at 10.

I'm putting together a survey so I can gather all the attendance details and will be posting that tonight and start PMing it to attendees.

Although I’ve long had award flight on SQ set up to attend SIN and Post-Do in Vietnam, I’ve had to cancel the flight due to other matters, and, sadly for me, won’t be coming.

I wish everyone a terrific Do and a very Happy New Year.

I'm hoping I won't be echoing similar sentiments, not because we can't go but because UA "lost" our outbound award flight due to SQ schedule change.

Still trying to figure out how to get them to get it back :(

Can someone tell me what the deal with Bintan Island is; do you require a passport, and do you have to pay the $25.00 USD visa fee on arrival.

I fixed 1 nights accommodation and then went to book the flights only to find the price went up $500.00, for one way. :td: so I didn't book, hoping the flight prices would come down.

I have found another way to get back from Singapore; although it does involve an overnight flight in economy.

I know a few Fters were hoping I could attend so I am still interested but on the other hand I could just stay home, Brads PM this morning has meant I better make up my mind.

It's been a while since I have been to Bintan, and can't make the trip this time. Your best bet is keep your flights into and out of SIN. Bintan is a fast (about an hour) ferry ride away from the Tanah Merah ferry terminal (near Changi). I haven't checked if the travel details have yet been posted to the do forum.

Cost is about S$70 return. I believe you have to still pay the US$25 Indonesian entry fee (not applicable if you have an APEC card). The island resorts, etc. usually accept IDH as well as SGD (or any good currency really) - just watch the exchange rates.

Fly to SGN. I would suggest taking the following flight to SGN on Monday 1/21: Jetstar Asia 557 Dep: 2:00PM Arr: 3:05PM
Dinner at 8:00 PM, this is going to be Vietnamese food, but I'm still deciding on a restaurant.

Hmm...trying to decide if I should keep my free (part of award ticket) SQ186 flight (5:40p-6:45p) or switch to the suggested JetStar flight. I'm guessing an 8:00p dinner might be hard to make with 6:45p arrival. Would I be missing out on anything else in the afternoon?
