New York City - Booking car from EWR - how long to allow after scheduled arrival?

Booking a car to take us to Manhattan.

How long to allow after scheduled arrival time to take into account immigration/bag collection etc?

Also, do the car companies check flight statuses etc? Dont want to pay loads if the flight is delayed?

Or am I better off booking when I get there? Was thinking of Carmel, Dial7 or whatever?

Don't ask for kerbside or luggage claim pick up. Instead opt for the "will call" option. You give them a call and then they will come to the arrivals kerbside to pick you up. It takes around 10 minutes after you call depending on the car service.

Sounds better. Im guessing this means you dont pay for the waiting time if you;re flight is late then? 10 minutes sounds pretty good.

Any recommendations for which car service for EWR?

Yep, that's the way to do it.

Consider Dial 7 (www.dial7.com or 212-777-7777)

I refer probably 5 or 6 people to them each week. They usually have a cache of cars at the airport, and after calling, they can usually have a car at curbside available within 5-7 minutes.

Depending on where in Manhattan you are going, their prices can be less than 50.00, which is less than a taxi.

Also, from my expierence, DO NOT prepay for your car service. Should your flight end up being delayed (by hours, or even a day), I have run into issues with car services (not Dial7) being unable to accomidate a passenger for hours, even though they had a confirmed reservation because their flight was late.

As far as customs processing times, figure on 30-60 minutes if you hold a US Passport, 60-120 for non US Passports.

Soho. So not far from the Holland Tunnel.

OK. I guess I might just call when I get to airport.

How much would taxi be approx?

50 or so (plus a possible $5 peak surcharge.)

Both taxi and Dial7 prices were exclusive of tolls (15.00) and tip.

Dial7 allows credit card use for no fee (you need to provide your CC info at time of booking)

Taxis require purchase of a voucher (I believe 5.99) at the taxi stand.

How much would taxi be approx? The taxi will be more expensive. They might want you to pay extra for them to return to NJ. I would advice car service. I've used Dial 7 and have called them in advance to make a reservation. When you have gone through immigration, give them a call. Customs is a mere walk through.

Car services will know that your flight is delayed so don't worry about it. When you're reserving, let them know you'll be on an int'l flight. If you're American, going through immigration will be quicker than if you're not. If you're American and sitting toward the front of the plane, that's even better. :p

If you book online with Dial 7, you'll save $2 and pay $44 plus tolls and tip for a sedan. http://www.dial7.com/transportation_rates_NY

Just wondered since I see the car services provide a set price for pretty much all of Manhattan. And since we're going to the Trump Soho which is very close to Holland Tunnel I just wondered if based on distance taxi might be cheaper...

UK citizen so immigration can take some time unfortunately.

BTW - seen Dial7, Carmel, Tel Aviv

Which one is best and most reliable?

Taxis too operate on a flat-rate zone system from EWR. There are no metered rates.

Your fare would be:

Base: 50.00
Tolls: 15.00

*"Peak" Surcharge 5.00
*Credit Card Voucher Fee 5.99

* Indicates "optional" items. Peak times are 6am-9am/4pm-7pm Monday-Friday, 12pm-8pm on Saturday and Sunday

At a minimum, a taxi would be 65.00, Maximum 75.99 (Before Tip)

As far as Dial7 vs Carmel vs TelAviv goes. -- We work with them, pretty much in that order of popularity. I would be pretty certain both Dial7 and Carmel would have a vehicle at the airport at all times, so you could just call upon your exiting customs. TelAviv, I do not know.

Thanks. I see. So no advantage at all with being slightly closer.

That would be correct. There would be an additional $5 charge if you were going to the East side of Manhattan.

Dial7 and Tel Aviv are, for all practical purposes to the consumer, one and the same (I think technically Dial7 drivers may be independent contractors while Tel Aviv drivers are direct employees, but am not sure). Tel Aviv now advertises only as Dial7.

Similar reliability to Carmel - very good, but not perfect.

Which one is best and most reliable? No difference. You call them; they'll arrive in about 10-15 minutes. Taxis are more expensive than car service. $15 toll for an EWR taxi? That's just pure profit for the taxi companies.

Not impressed with Dial7. Am I expecting too much of a driver to be able to speak english and not converse with humbles and grunts?

Hmmmm... Yeah - kind of expecting too much there... Probably ideal if they don't have an odor, can get you to your destination quickly/efficiently, isn't having a cell phone conversation the entire trip and open a door for you or helps with luggage. That to me is perfect.

I can't blame the drivers as sometimes people don't want to talk to the driver whatsoever and other times they want a driver to be their friend. Perhaps, driver is also doing his/her own evasive personality trait.

Not impressed with Dial7. Am I expecting too much of a driver to be able to speak english and not converse with humbles and grunts?Never had a Dial 7 driver (or any driver from other companies) not understand enough English to drive me home. Amazing how they can understand me when I tell them to take the 59th St Bridge instead of the Triboro when I'm coming home from LGA. I wonder how much hatred of foreigners there is or mere snobbery when I read a comment like the one quoted above.
