Hello Everyone,

My wife and I are going to Italy in September for a wedding and spending 10 days to tour :D

We plan on using the train THREE TIMES:

Rome to Naples
Naples to Florence
Florence to Rome

1. Is there a difference between EuroRailways or RailEurope
2. Is it better to get a three day pass and then pay for the tickets later, it appears $10 or so to get a reservation OR purchase tickets ahead of time
3. How long does it take to get to Rome to Capri? logical expectation, we are flying into Rome and the wedding is in Capri

Thoughts

Even Hotel thoughts would be helpful

Thank you!

The Seat61 (http://www.seat61.com) website may be of help.

Thank you for the links.....

I am an accountant and have already did the number crunching between individual tickets and rail passes, along with the flexibility with a rail pass

I was also hoping to get first hand knowledge

Both seem to be travel agents that sell rail passes and overpriced point-to-point tickets to non-Europeans.

All the routes you mentioned have frequent high-speed frecciarossa service. I would recommend taking it as it is usually not much more expensive. Naples to Florence (Firenze in Italian) will most likely require going through Rome anyway. Look on trenitalia's website how much the cheapest point-to-point tickets are. There are some that have discounts and are non-refundable/non-changeable, others are changeable prior to departure with a penalty.

IMO. I highly doubt that a 3-day rail pass is worth it, as you're looking at approx. 180 €/person. Sure, you'll have more flexibility, but even with a semi-flexible ticket you will probably be better off. Again, check Trenitalia's point-to-point fares.

Rome is a big city. Assuming you're talking about Roma-Termini as your origin, it's about 70-90 min to Naples, another 20 mins to the Ferry dock, and then about an 50-90 min on the ferry. Ferries (http://www.capritourism.com/imgg/download/collegamenti_marittimi_capri_orario.pdf)[pdf] run every hour or so. And about 15-20 mins on the other end (depending on where you need to go).

Add an hour on top of that for Italian craziness and unpredictability.

So from Termini, figure 2.5-4 hours (+1 hr for Italian unpredictability). If you're coming from FCO, add another 30-50 mins.
