Some notes from WineDo 3. Take a look/see so you can get in the mood. WineDo 3 - Sunday June 13, 2010 New York City - Greenwich Village
While the linked thread may look to some that we're bragging about what we own , the WineDo is open to everyone. The only qualification is that you have to bring a bottle of (drinkable) wine. Estimated cost of dinner is $80, which includes tax and tip. The majority of wine last year ranged anywhere from $25 - $200 bottle. Everyone stepped up. This dinner is a great way to taste and discuss wine, in addition to miles, points, and etc.
24 Flyertalkers attended last year... and we had 38 bottles.
For WineDo 5, You're expected to bring a wine that cost a minimum of $35, and a maximum of whatever you like. This is our first price increase. If you'd like to bring something experimental, it will have to be in addition to the minimum cost wine. After some previous discussion, this seemed to be the best solution. Also, several people talked about stepping up. That's fine. But rather than sit all the fancy wine people together :p, dinner will still sort of be open seating.
We drank some great juice last year. I don't know how we can possibly top it. Flyertalkers never disappoint. If you're not a drinker, you're still invited. They sell beer and other beverages.
Our distinguised wine panel mjm and cordelli, will coordinate what's drinkable. Last year we enjoyed multiple bottles of red and white wine. We could use a nice champagne to start.
Can you join us?

We're going to raise the stakes for WineDo 5. Dinner will be wine themed, just like they do on the wine boards. Most themed dinners still have a starter champagne and white, not to mention an after dinner sweet wine. If you know what you're going to bring, please post to the thread.
Please note, the affordable lunch or dinner is planned for Saturday on the Brooklyn Reality Tour. We get to experience coach and first class on the same weekend.

I'd rather not get into conversations we've had in past threads, where we discussed price/quality issues on wine. WineDo 5 is trying to make sure that all attendees will drink well. I'm in for my first Wine Do, but I am anxious about the crowd.
I don't really know anything about wine, other than that I like drinking it. But one of my New Year's Resolutions was to learn and develop a more sophisticated palate, so this seems like a relatively non-threatening way to start. I'll need some advice on what to bring, otherwise I'll be randomly selecting a bottle in the $50 to $100 price range. Not my usual range as somehow I've never outgrown my college habit of drinking Two Buck Chuck or whatever is on sale.

I happened to be sitting at a table with some Canuck from the plains last year. ;) He had a wine palate as sophisticated as you might expect for someone who lives in a mix of oil and amber waves of grain. :D He had a fantastic time. ^ I drink a fair amount of wine - but sometimes my description of the wines I drink can be "mmm, that was yummy," or "icky, that tasted icky. Ewwww." So there's my sophistication for you.
Honestly, I wouldn't keep returning to Wine Do if it was anything different than a comfortable way to hang out with a bunch of folks and try 30-something bottles of wine. If you like drinking wine, and can tolerate a bunch of FTers for the length of a decent meal :D it is a great thing to attend.
ps - you should be a lot more concerned with your UA 2P status than your knowledge of wine :D :D :D

For any of you not wanting to bring more than a carry on, I suggest looking a some of the California wine shops that ship and have your wine meet you in NY. I am sure there is a local attendee or two that would help with an address.
NY wine prices are rather ridiculous and the selection is paltry in many cases. If you have time after arrival to go hunt for wine that is great, otherwise you may consider separate itineraries for you and your wine. ;-)
If you are OK checking a bag, or in this case a small box, you can go into almost any wine store, and I believe any UPS/FedEx store and get a styrofoam shipper. This is premolded styrofoam container which is encased in a standard cardboard box. I have traveled thousands and thousands of miles with these and they are beyond a doubt the best shipping option. And once in NY you chuck it in the bin and are less bogged down on your return trip.
Good luck,
Mike

Good suggestion. NY is a state where we can ship wine, and most wineries here will ship 2 bottles for not much $. Many better wine stores also have shipping as a major part of their business.
Now for the caveat - a lot of wineries WILL NOT SHIP in extreme weather situations - it may be nice and warm outside to you, but the inside of that UPS truck might be boiling your wine. So, while the Wine Do will probably not be affected by this, you should still plan on shipping by early May if you decide to take this route.
For my final morning thought, for the totally clueless of what to bring, if you find anything imported by Kermit Lynch or North Berkeley Imports at the price point of this event, you will probably bring something that will be enjoyed by at least 90% of the attendees. (North Berkeley ships - I have no connection with them - they are just good and educated folks nearby home and have an interesting collection of French and Italian wines in a myriad of price points.)

Better get my name on the list before it fills up. Me plus one please.
For wine in checked luggage, I head to Home Depot, buy a length of 4 inch drain pipe, cut it into 13 inch or so lengths (if you don't have saw at home, head over to the molding section and use their miter boxes) and slip the bottles in there. The PVC pipe will keep it safe.
If anybody wants to ship to the area, I have a UPS store account in New York I use for all my wine deliveries you are free to use. Only from wineries or other merchants who can legally ship to New York, no personal shipments. PM me if you need the address.

I'm thinking a couple of Parker Rated 98's since we're getting all fancy. While I am not into his ratings at all, it just so happens that two of the wines I have had the pleasure of having recently both got high praise from him.
A white, and a Red.
2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
On the advice of one of the vendors we sometimes buy from we picked up some of this. Not knowing much about it other than what he recommended, all the ratings had not come out for it yet.
98 points Robert Parker "The limited cuvee of 100% old vine Roussanne (50% vinified in barrel and 50% in tank), the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape blanc Vieilles Vignes is an extraordinary wine. Since the debut vintage in 1986, I have been unable to figure out how to predict this cuvee’s aging potential, but I tend to agree with most sommeliers who feel this wine needs to be drunk in its first 4-6 years of life, then not touched again until age 12-15. It is so amazing, I usually drink it as quickly as I can get my hands on a few bottles. The sensational 2006 possesses a wonderful honeysuckle note interwoven with marmalade, tropical fruit, peaches, and buttery pastry characteristics, and zesty acidity despite a thick, full-bodied, rich texture. It is difficult to find a better white Chateauneuf du Pape than Beaucastel. Extraordinarily rich and honeyed, it is ideal for drinking with intensely flavored culinary dishes."
We popped a bottle the week before the do last year and it was quite good (I actually had to go back in the thread to see if it was for the do). We brought a bottle to dinner a few weeks ago with friends and it was just crazy good, so much they went out to try and buy some, but the price had significantly increased so they had to pass. Though they are more than willing to invite themselves over to get another one of ours. If I was to list the top four or five whites I've ever had, this would certainly make the list.
For the Red
2007 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Éloge (which if Dan brings the 2002 may make for a nice comparison)
It's probably no secret I love Todd's wines, and this one is no exception. While it's got decades of potential, the last time I had it it was drinking quite well. Who knows, maybe at WineDo 25 in 2032 I'll pop another bottle.
98 points Robert Parker - "The 2007 Eloge is a profoundly complex, extraordinary wine that is showing better out of bottle than it ever did from barrel. The final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot reveals an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of graphite, creme de cassis, cedarwood, Christmas fruitcake, bay leaf and a damp forest floor-like character. It possesses sensational depth, a full-bodied opulence, admirable purity and a skyscraper-like texture and finish. This killer wine has not yet closed down, and it should drink well for 20-25 years."

That Beaucastel is magic. I am a big fan of that family's wines. And the Blanc is a treat.
ACV anything is wonderful ( There Chard is perhaps one of the two three best in Napa), and the Eloge is a really nice way to look a Bordeaux from afar. If you guys have the '02 and the '07, that is going to be one very enjoyable comparison.

Last night I went to a wine dinner at Peking Duck House on East 53 street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. I've been here before and the food is good.
I can bring down the cost to ~$65, vs $80 - $85 at Tribecca Grill and North Square.

I'm reviewing a menu from North Square. If we can guarantee 24 attendees, the price will come in around ~$75.00. We did WineDo 3 in a private room. NS did a great job.
North Square is located just off Washington Square Park in the village (Greenwich Village). ;) http://www.NorthSquareNY.com/
North Square is a great location. IM(nsh)O, it is a more comfortable venue than Tribeca Grill for this type of dinner, all things otherwise being equal. Either, however, is very good and at $80 mas o menos for these dinners is a great value. For the couple of currently available seats, for those who may be hesitant - I don't know what NYC corkage typically is, but lets figure $20 in these sorts of places, and there's no less than a bottle per person. 3 courses plus corkage plus tax and tip = $80 is really quite a deal.
This is the only FT event that I now go out of my way to attend. If I otherwise stumble upon a Do, a Done, or a Did, sometimes I'll pop in. I can't thank Dan enough for putting these together. Anyone know of any good wine shops in New York?
For this party, for out of town guests staying in central areas, this may be the best bet to find the right kind of wine for this party.

NY has ridiculous prices so if you can I recommend buying local to yourself and shipping it to a local before the party. The California shops online have much better selections and way more reasonably priced including shipping.

This current thread in the New York forum should keep you busy. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/new-york-city/1331805-where-can-i-find-good-wines-nyc.html
That said, you can ship wine to my house if you'd like.
Reminder: The cost of admission is a $35 bottle of wine that will be vetted by the committee. :p As I noted upthread, several people seem to be stepping up their game this year. ^

Tribeca Grill responded to my e mail and said they'd get back to me next week.

I agree with EB1K. Having our own private dining room at North Square made it special! I don't know if they would do that again, though. Normally, that room is the bar, isn't it?

The room we were in last time had a private bar. It's not open otherwise. The restaurant does have a 'normal' bar area.
I've started posting the wine folks are bringing to the thread on the first page.

Most likely (95%) A Donkey and Goat 2006 Vieilles Vignes, 2006 Mendocino Syrah. Unfiltered, 245 cases.
I may also bring a second wine, probably an "interesting (unusual) white" that likely doesn't meet this year's "entry $" but it will be an extra bonus bottle, and is guaranteed not to scare anyone away, nor make anyone vomit a little bit in his own mouth. ;) I have a few in mind.

Actually Châteauneuf-du-Pape is only red or white. The rosé is from the Côtes du Rhône AOC which although geographically adjacent is not the same thing.
Wonderful, wonderful rosé from the Rhone region, so if one is to be brought all will be very pleased to be able to drink it I would think.

Last year we had more bottles than attendees. :o
Bonus bottles are encouraged, but not necessary.
Some dos and don'ts for WineDo 5:
Do: Short pours to start.
Do: Be aggressive and taste. Last year many attendees 'missed' out on some wines.
Do: Take notes if you'd like.
Do: Get up and walk to other tables.
Do: Ask questions
Do: Talk about the wine.
Can't think of any don'ts. :p
Estimated cost is ~$82. Roughly the same as WD 3 and WD 4. My earlier number of low $70's neglected the corkage.
I have to sign a contract guaranteeing 20 attendees. If you can't make it, now's the time to let us know.

I would only add one "Don't"....
Don't stifle yourself.
In all the years of tasting wine I have done, and at all the tastings I have joined, there is one great truth that many infrequent wine tasters tend to forget.
That is that your palate, your thoughts. your comments, regardless of experience, vocabulary, or level wine geekiness are no less valid and no less deserving of being shared and heard. So people, treat yourselves to a great time and talk up the wine. It is a lot of fun and typically leads to some new inspirations next time you are in your favorite shop, wine aisle, etc.
Wish I was going to be there with all of you.

Don't short sell bonus bottles. In 2009, this wine was a bonus bottle:
2004 Paradise Ridge Shiraz - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Even though we tasted the Molly Dooker and Amon Ra, this cold, sparkling shiraz was the most fussed over, talked about wine. I've never tasted a wine like this. It had lots of bubbles. Great taste. Very dark purple. Jammy. This wine was the most fun of the evenings wines. 275 cs produced. (92 pts.)

Since Calcifer decided on a French white, I thought that she would like to taste a type of Austrian red that she did not have time for on her recent trip to the white wine producing area of northwestern Austria.
It is a Grassl Rubin Carnuntum, something that is likely way below the price floor agreed on for this dinner but which is difficult to impossible to find around here and very typical of the breed. It is probably mostly zweigelt with some blaufrankisch and maybe a zootch of Merlot thrown in. I hope that she will like it.

I'm not sure what to make of dhammer53's comment about the Dunham I brought two years ago, since even the cheapest it could be bought for was 1.4 times the minimum buy-in (and just about equal to the current year's buy-in), and it seemed to get murmurs of approval when it was passed around.
In any case, though, whatever I do bring this year will definitely be colored red. The search for a suitable candidate now begins...

The OP has been updated. Someone just pulled out. We're going to have 19 for dinner. I'm on the hook for 20 since that was the minimum to get the private room. I've been working the wine boards and Milepoint. So far, no luck.
This mean everyone is on the hook for $4. Stay tuned.

Sadly I do... at least I was able to change my flight and still make it to ride the dAArk side trimotor before heading to my meetings (few hundred $$$, hate multi-city pricing, but it was not cheaper with a throw away ticket) .
I just returned from France with some new wine bottles. If you like something you have and have spare bottles, I'd trade you a bottle.

Since the only folks other than the waitstaff in the room are other FTers, FTers are the only folks you need to impress with your attire. And it is my experience that most FTers are pretty undiscriminating when it comes to clothing. ;)

Sunday June 3, 2012 at 7:00 (1900).
Cost will be about $82.
Place: North Square
Missing so far: 20
El_Chiflero CdP
I told El_Chiflero to bring cash, since he hasn't paypaled.
The earliest North Square can seat us is now 7:00 (1900).
They'll be preparing the room from an earlier party. Plan on arriving ~6:30 - 6:45.
We can meet in the bar, then they'll take us to the private room.
I have to sign a contract guaranteeing 20 attendees. If you can't make it, now's the time to let us know.
Anything less than 20 people will require $4.00 additional. Just about everyone has paid. WineDo 6 will be at a location that doesn't require a minimum.

Dan, thank you for organizing the best Wine Do EVAR. (Well, I wasn't at 1 or 2). The location was excellent, the food and service were great, the wines were - well, the first time there wasn't a single one where I went "oh my, I wish I didn't taste this" - in fact the lowest common denominator was a "not bad" and the best - well, thank you for allowing us to share your special bottles. And the company was great.
There is a reason why this is the only "Do" that is on my "I don't want to miss this" list - I know it takes a lot of time and effort, and by the looks of everyone there, we all not only appreciate your effort, but thoroughly enjoy ourselves.
And to everyone who attended and what you brought, thank you. It was a pleasure to see you (and most of you, again) and it sure looks like a good time was had by all.
And by the time the last few stragglers left, all but "las ultimas gotas" remained, so your contributions did not go down the drain in vain. :D

It was, once again, a totally amazing night.
As always, the most telling part of what a good time it must have been was was people poke their head through the curtain into the private room with a look of "I don't know what's going on in there, but everybody looks like they are having a blast"
There was not a single wine that I had (and I tasted I believe all but one or two of them) that I would not serve at home for a party. They were all good.
This year's event had such a range of wines, something for everybody.
Wine that smelled like bananas, which was actually quite good.
Older stuff from the 60's that would open as the night went on
The white Chateauneuf, which if you asked me to list the best whites I've ever had, it would be on the top three or five
The 12 year old Nebbiolo, a grape I love, but have never had a chance to have it after it's aged a few years. Without knowing what it was I would never have guessed what it was
Four totally different sparklings (actually think they were all champagnes). One with a wonderful peach flavor but still on the dry side, another very dry classic, and one magic one that had these big bubbles that disappeared as soon as it hit the pallet leaving the very clean crisp (really no yeast at all) flavor. And of course the ever wonderful Veuve Clicquot.
For a few years or so I have been a huge fan of one of the bottles that was there, but have never strayed from the 2003 vintage, because in part we were in the vineyards in france that year tasting the grapes on the vines. Trying the 1989 last night let me know that should I buy some more, I really need to put some down for the long term
The contrast between the range of wines, from the 1969(?) Cheval Blanc, very mellow and smooth, the fruit long converted into delicate flavor layers you have to taste with both your tongue and mind to pull out of the wine, to the modern in your face Zin, the comparison between the 2002 and the 2007 Eloges from Anderson Conn Valley, there was something for everybody.
What's better than Key Lime Pie and Ice Wine?
Wine from Israel, France, Austria, California, Walla Walla Washington, Canada (a really surprising Pinot no less, a wonderful light bright color for a pinot), and probably a few other places I'm leaving out.
There was certainly something for everybody with the wide range of wines available.
The food wonderful the service great, with the exception of some cork butchering because I don't think they have ever dealt with some of the older corks and of course wonderful company.
I think everybody left happy and even more important I think everybody left with a bit more knowledge about one wine or the other, something they need to find, etc.
I will tell a quick story about the white Chateauneuf for those who took pictures of the label to hunt down.
When it was offered to us by a rep at one of the places we occasionally buy wine from, it was on a futures basis, where you order the wine before it's bottled. It's a gamble as you don't usually know what it will be like unless you happen to have gone to the winery to taste it out of the barrel. We were buying blind in this case.
Over the time from when it was bottled and released it started getting incredible ratings from the various people. Each good rating and the price increased. Eventually to the point where now it is selling for four or five times what we paid for it. That's pure profit on the resellers they buy at a set price long before it ends up in the bottle but the moral of the story is don't hesitate. If you find something you like you need to commit if the price is good.

1989 Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle
33 btls available
Sale Price: $229/btl
WA 96
"This fabulous, blockbuster has been totally unevolved since bottling, but at the Jaboulet tasting, it was beginning to reveal some of its formidable potential. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, minerals, and hot bricks/wood fire. Super-ripe and full-bodied, with a massive mid-section, teeth-staining extract, and mouth-searing tannin, it is a monster-sized La Chapelle."-Robert Parker, 2000

Can you share a little about that very interesting Israeli wine? It was my first taste of any wine from the Middle East. ^
We were all amazed how HEAVY the bottle was!
Yes, it is HEAVY bottle indeed! I actually like the bottle (I had one that I used as a flower holder for a while). It shows an investment. The Cave 2003 was actually one of their very best. I am sad I got only 6 bottles at the time, but I am very happy this great group of people had the honor of having the last one.
I drank the wine in 2008, 2010 and in 2011 (I had an event in which the wine was popular and I had to take out two bottle in 2011). I gave one to a friend and his wife for their 30th anniversary. I liked it best in 2010 and 2011.
So, about the wine.
It's a single vintage wine, 65% cabernet sauvignon, and 35% merlot.
In terms of aging, the winery reports that the wine was aged for 26 months in French oak barrels and bottled in May 2006. [Then, it was further maturation period of five months in the bottle and tasted again before reaching the market... not that it matters to you, since it is now 2012...]. There were 15,000 bottles released, and a small set of them were Magnum and Double-Magnum.
I don't have my own tasting notes for this one from 2008. So, looking at the 2010 note (only one-two rows), I can tell you that I felt that the wine matured better, tasted the 'oak' (which I liked) and went very well with the dinner I had (nice aged steak...)
The winery itself is located on Horshan Mountain, in Northern/Central Israel

The wineyard from which the grapes came from is located in the upper Galilee
between 620M-700M above sea level. I tried looking for a direct location on the map, but that was a bit hard.
The wine is, indeed, kosher (even strict kosher).
Some people reported that they prefer drinking it shortly after opening the bottle, and not wait for 15-20 minutes as other recommend. I am not sure about your decisions in the wine-DO, but it sounds like the wine was enjoyable and drinkable (I was concern because I do store it in a dry, dark and relatively constant low temprature at home, but I do not have a real cellar, nor even a real wine refrigirator...)

And by the time the last few stragglers left, all but "las ultimas gotas" remained, so your contributions did not go down the drain in vain. :D
+1 to Dan for his efforts on our behalf.
I think my bottle had the most left when Dan & Violist & I left - I hope it was enjoyed by those who stuck around, as it was just as I remembered.

mjm has been after me to post my meager notes. I'll try to find a few minutes in the next few days.
The 20 of us had a great time. It's amazing that a couple of attendees flew in for WineDo 5. That's to my friend eastbay and luv + Megan for flying in.
DLroads, Your generousity was much appreciated. The champers was delicious. The Israeli wine was finally started towards the end of dinner. I've been drinking Israeli wine for several years, and some of it is actually drinkable these days. ;) FH, plenty of Israeli wine in the NY Metro area to sample.
We drank well, with little leftover wine.
My favorites were monitors Henry of Pelham and cordellis white CdP.
If we're to do WineDo 6 in a private room, we need to work hard to get to 20 people. The minimum is 24, but I got lucky (this time) and they reduced it to 20.
Ben and Priscilla worked seamlessly throughout the evening. ^ I did e mail the manager to let him know.

A few additional notes. Sorry, I really didn't go in to much detail this year.
I'm happy to say that participants of WineDo 5 tweaked it up a notch to make this dinner the best ever. Minimum bottle requirement was $35. We'll keep it at this level for next year. I'm not sure that I can deal with all the discussion again. ;) But hey... we did good.
07 Brundlmayer Brut - Lots of bubbles. Different than the above. Funny, there were no bubbles on my tounge, then it went flat?
Bruno Paillard from Reims. Lighter color. Less bubbles than both of the above. Dry. Nutty. Creamat-ish. So far, this is the best champagne.
Vueve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut NV. Nutty. My #1 of the 4 champagnes. ^
Whites
'10 Mer Soleil silver unoaked chard from SLH. Enjoyable.
2007 Prager Riesling Smaragd Hollerin - Some minerals and just a little sweetness. Just what I expected from the producer. IMHO, this was the #2 white.
2006 Chateau de Beaucastle CdP Creamy golden color. Toffee nose. Full and rich. Yummy. It was the first empty bottle. Clearly the #1 white wine.
2010 Mercury Sauv Musque from the Alexander Valley in CA. This was a bonus wine, meaning it was a 2nd bottle from a participant. ;) This had a banana nose with an unusual taste.
I tasted the 2007 Savennieres Clos du Papillon. It was heavy but not heavy. Not to my liking.
2009 Antica Chard A little oaky. Not bad.
Reds
Battle of the 2002/2007 Eloge from Anderson Conn Valley in CA.
I thought the 2002 was a little musty. Everyone else felt otherwise.
The 07 Eloge was fuller and richer than the 02. Some heat that wore away. We popped and poured. The 02 was opened 90 minutes earlier. I thought the 07 was the #1 red.
The Cheval Blanc was almost 40 years old. It wasn't great, but it was more than drinkable. A classic. You couldn't afford to replace this wine today. It was made famous in the movie Sideways.
Donkey and Goat Syrah wasn't a heavy syrah. Pleasant surprise. It reminded me more of a California pinot noir.
1999 Ridge Syrah. This wasn't a heavy syrah either, Enjoyable.
1989 Herimatage. This wasn't in a dumb phase, as many of us were told to expect. :p
The CdP that we all made fun of upthread 08 Domaine Monpertuis Châteauneuf-du-Pape E.A.R.L Vignettes Paul Jeunewas actually enjoyable.
Sweet wines
2008 Patit Creek Semillon Ice Wine was very sweet. Like honey. Talk to 20 people, and 20 people will have different opinions on ice wine. This wasn't my style.
Henry of Pelham Riesling Icewine was incredible. I've tasted HoP in the past, and expected a real treat. It didn't disappoint. Hmmm. I wish you could have smelled the nose.
There were a couple of wines that I don't remember tasting; or, didn't write a note on. Not that these are notes. ;) :D

I'd swap the 1 and 2 for the whites, but they were really "time and place" wines for me - with a big piece of salmon with an appropriate sauce, I could have polished off a large glass* of the 2006 Chateau de Beaucastle CdP. As for the Prager, Kathy made a great find! :p I trust that if she comes next year I will also enjoy her selection.

Chinese food of any description and wine is a bad starting place. Sorry. Anything to the contrary is just to be argumentative. Maybe chilled sherry but beyond that, the oil and spices kill the wine. There is a very good reason the kinds of food that developed where wine is made best developed the way they did.
And NY for a second wine Do in a year? Come on guys let try for something a little less handicapped in terms of decent wine options for those without cellars. May I be so bold as to suggest CA? It is after all the home of the best juice and much of the bet food in the US.

Having spent a lot of time tasting CA wines, my opinion is that the quality has gone down as the price has gone up. The climate of most of the regions are producing wines that have been cooked by the sun before they ever see the press.
The food is top rate, but there are many, many wines a little to the north of CA that can and do beat the CA wines at a much more reasonable price.

Generalization much? The weather is but one factor. The viticulture is a bigger factor. And that is where much of Oregon and Washington fall down actually. The grapes, terroir and winemakers are not in alignment. CA has a significantly higher number of people who know what they are doing, possibly due to more people doing it though. I would say the various terroir in Oregon are going to be hard to beat in a few years (Pinot in its various permutations for sure) but they are still working towards that point.
Washington is simply lagging both OR and CA by a wide margin. Someday but not yet.
CA does suffer from some very unreasonable prices, grapes allowed to hang too long, and excessive science. But the last two of those negatives are not limited to CA, but rather the younger generation of viticulturists.
With the number of producers, testing of more areas of existing AVA such as Sonoma Coast, it is far too broad of a statement to make that CA wines have gone up in price and down in quality. With Screaming Eagle and Quintessa style wines, yes I agree. With much of the Pinot and Chardonnay it is simply not accurate to say that.

...Washington is simply lagging both OR and CA by a wide margin. Someday but not yet...But ever closer and closer to the point that some of the Bordeaux style blends produced up there are much to the taste of those of us who prefer their leaner, structured, and subdued characteristics to the fruitier style which, until lately, was most of what came out of Northern California.
But that is a discussion for another time and place and... Late Dec. CA, I would love to join....this certainly is worthy of discussion. Since I know little about such, perhaps mjm can make some suggestions. There are a number of active FTers out there who would certainly be interested in attending either in the City or up in the wine country. Get it going and we will be there.

Always amused by the assertion about WA wines. Wishful thinking still I am afraid. OR just quietly makes so seriously awesome Pinots and a selection of truly splendid whites too.
Quicelda Creek for example? Ha! a flabby oaky disaster of a wine. As bad as Screaming Eagle. Only a R. Parker could like that stuff. I think that again the characterization of CA wines is highly inaccurate but unless you guys come and taste them you will maintain the opinion they are all made by Opus or Caymus. A pity really. But I think it is worth noting that CA has a significantly more developed wine production scene and that to posit that WA cabs a I am very sure nobody thinks OR is a Cab (i.e. Bordeaux blend basis) producing state.
Have a Canadian acquaintance here in Tokyo that thinks Canada makes wine worth comparing to both Europe and the West Coast.
As for Chinese food and wine, no there is no disagreement. It is simply not wine food. People may offer other opinions but they would be wrong. Pairing wines is so much more than individual tastes after all.
I think we should drink to the strengths of the region. In my mind the Pinots an Chards are some of the best of CA these days. Plus it is easier to drink a lot of as opposed to Cab.
Somewhere in the City would be grand as far as I am concerned. Getting up to wine country is a hike if we are flying in for a dinner.
The last week of Dec. is great so anytime then that is good for you guys.

I liked this line:
"we encountered bottle after bottle that had a combo too often sadly elusive in California: an immediate sense of pleasure and the potential to grow and mature with age."
Scratching my head about what the Washingtonian wine was that won the Taste of Paris. Or which WA wine was represented at all. In the second time around several years later even.
As I say, their wanting it to be so does not make it so. Time, not passion, creates the reputation they seek. Patience is necessary.
So on to the question of a California wine dinner. Surely it makes more sense than NY? Come on out folks, I am traveling 5124 miles to get there. Jump on a transcon and join me. :-)

No, it does not work. Hoisin sauce and greasy duck, dominate the palate and do not allow the Pinot to accentuate the food. 3 years in China, and a passing familiarity with wine, trust me, this is non-starter.
People who enjoy wine will find any occasion to drink it so based on what I have seen of the Berserker dinners pictures at PDH, the eclectic selection of wine and the people standing around instead of sitting, I think they are there for the wine, company, limited corkage fee and volume of food. They are not there for the pairing of the wine and Chinese food. Nobody who knows wine does that. NB: Duck and wine is gorgeous, but must be prepared in a way that the flavors mingle with the wine rather than dominate it.

The North Square Duck from the last visit (not the wine do) and the Riesling we had that night was an incredible pairing, with the sauce of the duck picking up all the fruit of the wine.

Having fun, well actually I am amused, if that is the same thing. Not narrow, accurate. But that is how I roll. :)

Just stick with Sonoma (Green or Russian River Valley) and you'll never go back to the inflated Napa pricing (except for V. Arroyo or Lava). I think comparing California to Oregon is unfair if we go Napa v. Willamette. And Washington is only good due to the bargains one gets for very solid wine (Mark Ryan, Delille and Januik are exceptions there). But even Willamette has the hyper-inflated Domaine Serene.
I've visited Oregon eight times this year already (the infamous LGA-PDX MRs), and California three times, if folks want specific winery thoughts.

But that is how I roll. :)I guess that we will need to get him a bottle of the Col Solare or a Protagonist next month when we are out there and let him roll that stuff with some of his Napa bombalinos when he invites us to his wine dinner in San Francisco or Oaktown....Dec. is out for me.... And what do you mean that Dec is out for you? Last I heard AS goes up and down the west coast hourly.
Meanwhile it appears that this crowd really would like the NYC winter wine dinner to happen on December 15. That means it is time to try to find a place that wants the likes of us on a Saturday night. Stay tuned.

And what do you mean that Dec is out for you? Last I heard AS goes up and down the west coast hourly.I spent time this summer re-tracing some of our stops from the Sideways DO and visited some new places along the way. I also spent time over Labor Day weekend with my daughter who lives in Agoura Hills, outside of LA. We spent a day visiting several places, so I've done my CA stops for this year.
If you wanted to wait until January, I would be interested.
Also, I don't need more miles in the bank in '12. I will need all the help I can get in '13.

I am a (very slight) possible for Saturday Dec. 15 for another wine dinner in NYC. Depends on the availability of a cheap airfare.
I would much prefer a Saturday or Sunday night in the Bay Area (including wine country) in Nov./Dec.! :p
I find the Peking Duck + wine debate fascinating! How about a light, crisp Sauvignon Blanc to contrast with (rather than compete with) the rather greasy hoisin-sauced PD?

The logistics for SFO depends on mjm.
And I agree a high acid wine like maybe the Sauvignon Blanc can work with such dishes as the duck and hoisin.

Kathy,
I find hoisin sauce, fat, and rich flavors are tough with SB. I prefer herbal accented dishes, salads, shellfish even, or possibly very bland (somewhat fatty is fine if a fish) with SB. The duck would not be right.

Well I am not entirely sure I know what a Bombalino is, but if I were to pick a Napa wine that were a bit restrained yet to pour it might be a Ch. Montelena Estate or a ACV estate Cab. Both will get softer over the years, but are terrific when young. Had Stags Leap Cask 23 from the late 90’s recently, and wow!
I am curious to try these young wineries’ you suggest, as I am always curious about wine. I wonder though if they really are ready to step out on the stage yet. The ratings I see show them to be full of promise, but as yet lacking on performance.

I would agree for great Chards and many Pinots, but one cannot find great Cab in Sonoma but can indeed in Napa. Horses for courses basically.
Date for a dinner in the City: 12/30 would be a great day.

it might be a Ch. Montelena Estate.Really?? I visited the winery last July and found nothing that impressed. Perhaps someone has been "Bottle Shock"ed....

Could not find anything at a winery that produces the Chard. that won the Taste of Paris? Really. Need to rethink your plate a bit I would say.
The Estate Cab. is also widely known as a great example of a time capable CA cab. Again, palate refinement may be in order. It does take time. Keep exploring and tasting. :)

It could be that the OP was not impressed with anything - maybe expected too much from them?

Fair enough. But I never like drinking too many cabs on my wine benders. Kills the palate. I do make an exception when going to Phelps.

I would highly recommend trying to stay out of NYC for Saturday night December dinners. That's the "preferred" weekend for big holiday parties who want to avoid December 22nd.
Then again, I live in NJ, and could go any day to the city. So I'm a bit biased...but still....

The Estate Cab is currently selling for $142.50 per 750 bottle on their website. Not exactly an everyday drinker.......However if you have a spare bottle to send me, I'll give you my address.
and I have spent many years refining my palate all over the world.
