What always helped for me is to have some alternative routings in mind or on paper and ask the staff if they can put you on one of those. Sometimes we frequent flyers have the less obvious routings at hand which could save some time.
Consider also alternative airports, e.g. Tampa. Maybe it's faster to fly somewhere and drive a part, although ways can be long in the US.

Did I understand right that he is not in AMS but has to get there first? In that case routings via CDG or directly to the US first could be a possibility.

Given that the OP has set their location to Durham, presumably the affected traveller is trying to fly from Durham Tees Valley Airport (MME), from where there are only 2 or 3 KLM flights a day (the only other international destination is Tenerife).

Given that it seems that it was the last flight of the day that was cancelled, there appears little alternative than to fly with KLM tomorrow (at the first notice of cancellation, he should have asked about the possibility of flying from another airport. Though the last KLM flights of the day from nearby Newcastle and Leeds/Bradford airports are at about the same time as the cancelled flight, so there probably was no way of getting to either airport in time to possibly catch a flight from there)

It must be 3 am in the morning, or later, in KL by now? At this stage, there's probably not a whole lot that can be done until the replacement flight leaves. However, if he really does need to leave earlier, he needs to do his research and find out what airlines might make this possible. Did he not ask to be put on the Malaysia Airlines flight to Amsterdam (which leaves within 15 minutes of the KL-operated flight, and which operates as a KL codeshare).

Getting to CDG won't be any easier - there are no Air France flights to Kuala Lumpur, for example!

Was KUL-AMS-MCO all booked on one ticket? All operated by KLM? Or did this just end up in Flying Blue because your KL (which now apparently stands for Kuala Lumpur) was misinterpreted as KLM? What airline was he booked on? Malaysia or KLM? Or someone else?

Flying Blue won't be able to do anything. They administer the frequent flyer programme only. They don't deal with bookings or rebookings.

He needs to ring KLM (if that is who issued his ticket) but it would really help if you had some viable alternate routings researched first. Get on to google and try finding routes from KL to the States bypassing Europe. I really don't think anything much can be done because Delta don't fly to KL so there's no easy way from KL to the States on SkyTeam. The only direct route to the US from KLIA appears to be Malaysia Airlines to Los Angeles - though I doubt that you could get him rebooked onto that (and there's still the problem of getting him all the way across the States from there) and it may not get him there any faster than waiting for tomorrow's KL flight. But if he's booked all the way through on KLM on one ticket and they can clearly see he's going to the States, being insistent might eventually persuade them to rebook him on a totally different route (but you really need to have a viable alternative route found first!!!!)

Sorry.

Sorry.IME, telephone agents have limited rebooking power (rarely empowered to book on other carriers, in particular) whereas agents at the airport normally have some more leeway (especially when you are booked in an expensive booking class but also across the board).
