I am a newbie on this forum.
How does it work, buying miles. Is it an option for me to get a one way ticket with it? Right now I need one to get back from China to Ams. Can I buy miles to avoid a crazy rate of a single journey.

Yes, it is an option. But keep in mind that availability of the award seat is not guaranteed (check before), unless you are taking a flex award, and that you will have to pay the famous "taxes" in addition to the miles spent.

You can also get a return ticket and just not use the return part.
