Dear FlyerTalk community,

I am one of two finalists in a video contest about women in aviation. The winner gets a free trip to Europe to fly across the English Channel.

I did add a signature a day or two ago- I'm not sure why it's not displaying correctly.

And the cause of the borking has been found- a co-worker listed the contest page on Fark.com and it landed on the front page (http://www.fark.com/comments/6926423/Farkette-Elizabeth-FL-is-trying-to-win-a-trip-to-Europe-become-an-ambassador-for-Americas-next-generation-of-women-pilots-Shes-currently-trailing-by-only-100-votes-Click-Video-Contest-tab-to-vote). Needless to say, a server meltdown soon followed.

Thanks. The group holding the Dallas conference is a different group with no connection that I know of to the contest.

Still waiting for the winner to be announced- I should find out tomorrow. They were going to declare a winner on Wednesday, but the server meltdown caused a few issues with getting an immediate, accurate count of votes/views.

Okay, so the official result is up. I did not win. (http://www.womenofaviationweek.org/english-channel-daily-report/2012/02/10/esther-of-silver-spring-md-to-represent-the-next-generation-of-american-women-pilots-in-europe/) However, due to the technical difficulties that occurred and the close results of the final vote (I lost by only 40 votes out of more then 5,200 cast in all), the committee took the unusual step of offering a different runner-up prize then originally offered. They offered to cover to cover the cost of accommodation; the flight across the Channel and a couple of other things if I could get to Europe on my own. Thanks to the stash of CO miles I have, I should be able to get over to the event and enjoy the festivities as well.

So in the long run I might not have won it all, but due to all the support that I got from places like this, it got me close enough. Thanks again for all of your support and for all the votes- it made a difference.

my guess is the winner also had posted her requests on other bulletin boards to garner votes as well

I'm guessing here but it probably came down to the site that had the most users willing to not only vote but keep voting multiple times
