Travel News - Malev shut downView Full Version : Malev shut down florin Feb 3, 12, 7:52 am the state-owned Hungarian airline founded in 1946, ceased flying after the government withdrew financing, becoming the second victim of European austerity measures in a week after the collapse of Spanair SA. Dovster Feb 3, 12, 8:15 am While, of course, this is very sad news for Hungary, it is also bad news for the rest of us. With Malev out of the competition, flights to Budapest are certain to be much more expensive. florin Feb 3, 12, 9:10 am I don't know if Malev is forever out of commission. Someone may come along and pick up the pieces, maybe similar to the way Alitalia was rescued by CAI (and merged with AirOne). If it is gone forever (which I doubt) I'm sure other carriers will ramp up service to BUD and there are still enough of them to make some serious competition, both from the majors (LH, LO, BA, AF, AZ, RO) and the LCCs (WizzAir, EasyJet, RyanAir,...)
