I'm looking for a decent low-rise hotel (max 10 stories) with balconies in the rooms. The only places I can find are places like Staybridge Suites, which look a little uninspiring.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

This isn't a low-rise hotel, but Cosmopolitan has balconies. Most places on the strip do not.
Tropicana had a back section that was two or three stories that had balconies, but this part of the hotel may have been imploded when they did their renovations.

You could check Alexis Park (http://www.alexispark.com/). I don't remember if they have balconies, but they are definitely very low-rise (like 2-3 stories max, IIRC).
Last time I stayed there was around 10 years ago. It was nice enough back then, but you should definitely check it out before you book.

The Trop. has basically remodeled most of its rooms and yes, it's oldest 2 story units have balcony, table & 2 chairs (the originals from the 1950's) - haven't seen the inside but the Paradise Tower/hi-rise above the gaming floor are nice, roomy (but, no balcony) I can't think of any current properties on the Strip with balcony - in part, Sin City is warm & dry year-round except for its short "cooler" winter months - we're there once in August with "true-feel" temp's around 120 degree F and the balcony was out of the question except to cook an egg ... LOL.
Palace Station, off-strip property on the other side of the Freeway on Sahara Ave. has 2 story units (need to call & reconfirm on balcony) but like the new Trop - those are the oldest units with cheapest rates, so definitely not going get any high end furnishings or luxury. The Staybridge will probably be nicer in comparison, really (at least the ones we've stayed with in SFO & SEA, etc.)
Is there anything appealing in particular that you are looking for in a balcony unit, perhaps we can suggest some alternative options? (If we're going to Oahu or Maui, then I would definitely book a condo unit with an semi/oceanview balcony ... and prices are still great out there depending on travel dates)
Depending on your length of stays (# of nights) - you might want to checkout some of time-shared/short term rental sites/links for possibilities, lots of absentee owners trying to sublet to offset their expenses, and many are nice in townhouse settings - just something to think about (including the Trump condo/hotel units, fully equipped in studio size+, floor to ceiling tinted glass, access to on-site health club & comp. on-site parking)

Reason for the balcony and low-rise is my wife is claustrophobic so can't go in lifts, but also isn't happy in either a high-rise (even if we were on a low floor) or room without balcony. So it's not really a choice thing, it's a necessity!
Thanks for the suggestions - the Staybridge still looks the best. What would be ideal is if any of the main hotels had additional low-rise blocks, but ones that aren't priced quite like the Wynn Fairway villas.

I see, understood. Being from LAX, I'm sure you've been there - and I wouldn't recommend something else like those low-rise ones (I think they had balcony units) behind the main towers of Circus Circus - stayed there once b/c our primary choices were sold out, never again - TG it's gone.
Another one comes to mind is an old-timer, Orleans on the other side of the freeway on Tropicana Ave, they have shuttles to the strip and deluxe rooms are 450 SF in size, Trops at 400 SF - (corrected- NO )low rise units , not sure if they have walk-out balconies but we passed by them all the time going over to Spring Mountain Blvd. area for meals. The area is okay but nothing really exciting going on, some not so desirable ... Mid-week rates look fairly reasonable and like most places, Priceline or Hotwire is definitely an option to book a cheap night or two (loved the insider's tips on better bidding . com)
Vegas has very strict & updated fire & building codes (post 1980 with the fire) so we feel safe going out there - we're recently horrified during a brief power outage on the East with a 5 star casino hotel property on an Indian preservation, walked down 18 stories mostly in the dark as emergency exit lights were either non-existent or failed to work until we reached floor 6 or 7. Fortunately, we're abled & backpacked it down as it was peak checkout time and I always carry a mini LED flashlight, came in very handy with DW in tow, other guests used their smartphone to illuminate their path coming down. Not cool - wrote to the hotel management, received a thank you form letter reply & no followup since then, I'm still not pleased - imagine a real, smokey fire at night or complete blackout.
Regardless, have a safe & fun time - our favorite annual destinations, even if it's just 4 to 6 days ...

I'm only recently LA - London originally - but have been to Vegas a number of times beforehand.
Orleans does indeed appear to be non-low rise, and (without sounding snobby) doesn't seem to have much wow factor. It seems that it's a struggle to get the wow factor in vegas without either the high rise or the exorbitant prices! Now if only the Mansion considered me a high-roller....

Imperial Palace has at least some on the front strip side. Only stayed their once. Great location, crappy everything else.

Second vote for cosmopolitan. Its the best you can do for reasonable prices if you need a balcony. Did a bunch of research on it a few months ago.

A vote for the Staybridge Suites. I've heard that this was originally built to be condos and was converted to SBS, so the finish level is pretty high.

I've never been there, but it seems to meet critiera for low-rise, balconies, and "wow" factor.
Note that the "wow" factor there may not appeal to everyone. I'd recommend a bit of internet research before selecting it...

Interesting, thanks indyscott. Ticks a lot of boxes, even though some of the reviews talk about swinging....

Spoke to Cosmopolitan, and unfortunately there doesn't appear to be stair access to the room floors, so no go for us but looks a really good option for anyone wanting a balcony. Note that when they say rooms start on floor 14, that's actually floor 4, they forget the numbers 4-13 exist.

Might also consider the former Las Vegas Hilton (now Las Vegas Hotel)--
They have lanai rooms that open onto the pool deck on one side of the hotel, and I believe balconies on the other. They are on the 3rd floor. Also, the north tower has a glass elevator that looks outside.

Cosmo also has pool access rooms; you'd probably have to call up to guarantee them. Officially floor 14, but actually floor 4 as previously discussed. They are located on the Bamboo Pool, where it says "lanais" on this map:
Still doesn't fix the stairway access, but they MUST have stairs for emergency purposes and it's only four stories, so eminently walkable.
Would be a shame to hobble the Vegas vibe by staying in a workaday Staybridge Suites.....

I was going to suggest this as well. They often have specials on Jetsetter with pretty good rates. But I think it could fit the bill.

I've had very good luck renting others' timeshares on Ebay. If you do this, you are not required to listen to the timeshare sales pitch, although they don't always tell you that. Some are amazingly cheap, I think I paid $259 for a week last summer for a 2 bedroom suite with kitchen at a nice resort. It's whatever is available when you book. If you are interested in going that route, book a cancelable room (so you have a backup plan) and then bid on a place on ebay, and then cancel the room if you win the auction.
The Tuscany Suites is also a very nice lo-rise hotel and has rooms on the ground floor. I believe some rooms have walk-out patios near the pool but I'm not sure.
I think El Cortez downtown also has some walk-up suites in their new Cabana suite tower, which I believe is only 3 or 4 floors, and also in the casino building by special request. It's a different flavor (very inexpensive) but can be fun and they have cleaned the area up a lot in the last few years. The Flame restaurant is a great value especially with a restaurant.com or other coupon.
In any case, you are almost certainly going to be trading glitz and/or location for the ground floor or balcony access. Very few of the high-rise casinos have balconies except maybe for penthouse suites.
In my case, it is a trade I would gladly make, since I am usually bringing my kids and we try to stay away from the strip anyway.
If you don't need a balcony, I think most people request high floors, so you could stay in a highrise Strip casino and request a low floor that you could access by stairs. However, stairs are likely to be cold and gray.
Enjoy! You generally can't go wrong with Vegas hotels in any case. Overall very high standards and fantastic value.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I've stayed there twice, and on one trip had a balcony overlooking Harrah's next door. Great location, but pretty much nothing else nice about the place. I'd say to stay away unless you're desperate, or are just looking for a cheap place to lay your head.
