Made a random (is it random if I do it once a day but at different times? :P) visit to the *A website. Front page, "Picture Your Upgrade...Star Alliance will soon be launching a new competition - 'Picture Your Upgrade'. Win exciting prizes just by taking photos! Check this page from February 8 for more details"

Click on the new campaign reveals this statement..

The Picture Your Upgrade campaign celebrates an array of exclusive Gold Status benefits that are available across all Star Alliance member airlines. Picture Your Upgrade is a mobile app-based competition that offers participants the chance to win a variety of luxury prizes, from Round the World Business Class tickets, to a Star Alliance Gold Status upgrade. The competition will be exclusively available through an iPhone, Android and BlackBerry app. In the light of the developments at Spanair, we are sure you will understand that we will be postponing the start of our “Picture Your Upgrade” competition for a few days. We will announce the new launch date soon.

I don't know about yall but I LOVE taking pictures and I LOVE upgrades (ok most of you relate to the 2nd one) haha I'm so excited!! or am I the only one?

I haven't looked today, but I suspect it may be on the 8th or maybe a day or so sooner. *A did not indicate when it would be available.

Oddly, the campaign seems to have disappeared from the *A front page this morning. But if you click through to here (http://www.staralliance.com/en/about/campaigns/) the apps are now live for download.

The Star Alliance Facebook page says that "One member from each of the participating member airline’s frequent flyer programme will be upgraded to Star Alliance Gold Status." Would this be valid only for the 2012 year (as in expire in early 2013)?

Since I'm already *G this year with United this year, I would probably want to choose another airline's program for this contest, like Miles and More, which gives upgrade certificates to their Senator level members. Or maybe AC's Aeroplan which gives "Select Privileges" upon reaching status?

The app doesn't work on my Blackberry Bold 9700, OS 6.
I have to register everytime I open it, it takes lots of time to get the connection and to load every single page and it freezes in the tasks window. To sum up I can't operate it and can't take pictures through the app.
Too bad because the prices are good

Not that easy for the regular flyers I suppose...

This first challenge requires you to fly 3 times within 14 days. Or twice if you manage to just snap a pic at your local airport without actually flying :p

Does look kind of tough if your flights get out of line with the task deadlines, but worth a go I guess.
(I'm likely to get 2 departure boards before the current task hits its deadline, and that's only going to be by snapping the departures board at NRT when I arrive from LHR on Sunday...)

Also seems like if you upload task photos to facebook then you get prize drawer entries as well.

It's actually not that hard if you live close to an airport... the rules specify that you can take a picture from the same airport but on a different date. So basically, you just need to run three times on three different days to the the same airport and take a picture of the departing board three times.

And while your at it, enroll in the united/four square promo that gives you 50 miles each day you "check in" from an airport.......

If I've understood the rules correctly you are only allowed to submit one picture per day per airport, so you should be able to submit pictures from several airports on the same day.

An issue I found is that this app doesn't work if you don't get some internet access from your phone. The app doesn't load... which is kind of a pain in backside when traveling...

I downloaded the app the day the competition started... just to find out that Norwegian residents are not allowed to participate!

--- Bummer ---

I hope EB in Norway will come up with an initiative for its residents to win an upgrade. Or maybe it is because Norwegian residents already get gold status at 45k miles.

I missed out on the departure boards contest, but I submitted my entries for the "chairs" and "carts" contests yesterday. Pics taken at JFK (2 on consecutive days) and LAX during a JFK-LAX-JFK run.

For some reason, the pics I took the first day at JFK showed "Jamaica" as the location in the application display (not on the camera display, but the display in the *A application which shows the city name next to the picture), and then showed "Littlefield" the following day, in the same airport. Anyone know why that might be? Did I cross an invisible district border or something within the airport? It can't have been a town border, because the entire airport is in Queens...

The LAX pictures just showed "Los Angeles," without any more specific district/neighborhood/suburb names.

I found that it is a PITA to use this POC application.

Not only you need internet connection (which not ALL international airport around the world have Free WiFi) 80% of the time the app either sucks up 100% of CPU cycle (quit the app drop back to almost no CPU usage!) or after taking photo, the app restarts itself and never register the photo you just took.

Major frustration using this crappy application.

Missed a few chances of entry just simply I have no internet connection or giving up after many tries of taking photos and failed.

They should of atleast allow the app to cache the entries until there is connection to upload.

OK so i did all entries... successfully and without too much trouble (I usually own a pre-paid data SIM card in each country :D).

But this last task.... how on earth can we catch those "Star Alliance" branded planes on 3 different days/3 different airports....?

Do we know those planes' registration numbers and can we track them?

because in 12 days, I'll only be at SIN and KIX... sucks big time

Exactly... I'm also done with this app due to these reasons. Missed some photo's when the app failed to load.

And also with the stupid implementation that you don't have access to your photo's after the competition closes. Two missed opportunities to upload to FB when I couldn't login due to a crappy internet connection.
