Travel with Children - Booking a reward ticket on DL for unborn

I know there are some older threads on this, so I apologize. We promised a trip to Disney World for our (will then be almost 4 year old) in December. We are now expecting our second child in June. Crazy to drag a 6 month old and 4 year old to Disney? Maybe, but that's not the question :p

I have enough miles to book 4 reward seats on DL JFK-MCO. We want to do car seat for baby. You can't book online or over the phone without entering secure flight info. Since a 6 month old has no ID to check against, can I just put Baby LastName and a dob of today?

The website won't let me put in a DOB in the future. I called into skymiles reservations and the guy said I could call in later and "correct" the dob but not the name. Or should we put in the name we are probably going to name her?

I don't want to wait 5 months because all the 1/2 mile awards will probably all be gone by then.

Thanks.

I booked tickets for DS before his birth. You can always correct the DoB. As for his name, who is going to know? It's not like they're going to ask for ID for a domestic trip. I'd suggest going with the most likely (as 'Baby' may cause you more headache then some gender-neutral name that isn't actually accurate).

I would go ahead and book the seat for ProbableFirstName LastName, with a DOB indicating an age of <2 at time of travel. As you're traveling on mileage tickets, Baby won't need her own FF number just yet, and she'll be too young for the TSA to demand ID so I wouldn't worry if the birth certificate and first airline ticket don't match.

p.s. congratulations in advance!

I would just put in the name you expect to give your child. If it ends up popping out a boy... well, no one can really tell at 6 months anyway, right?

Actually, this is not as insane as some would have you believe. Just make sure you arrive to the parks early and take afternoon naps when the parks are at their peak (noon to 4pm).

I personally think those are great ages! You have one that is pre-mobile and the other is post-toddler. He'll enjoy it and the younger one wont care.

Ditto about the timing. Afternoon nap. Get out of the park. Return towards the evening, after dinner. Perhaps just one parent with the older child can hit the more popular rides without the lines.

We did this (before the baby was born) with a 2 and 4 y/o. We only returned to the park once after dinner. I highly recommend getting to the park before rope drop, then getting out by 1 or 2. We went home for naps, then woke up and did something else for dinner (downtown disney, for example). everyone had a great time.

Definitely put the name you're planning to name her, and any DoB will do - fix it when she's born. We did exactly this with my daughter (she was not 6 months out, though - she was born the next day!).

The name is a problem because if you get it wrong, they can't change it, which means canceling and booking a new flight. This might work sometimes, but it only works if they have availability in the same class you booked in. I know with AA they change the availability daily (even if other tickets are not booked), and you might lose that fare class, meaning you'd be stuck needing to either use more miles or pay for the ticket.

Edit - didn't think of the fact that it's a domestic flight. You should be fine. Ours was international, so we needed the name to be right.

What others have said. Book the seat in Probable First Name / Last Name. If you name your child something else, who's going to know? They don't require ID. Generally, they don't make you put in a DOB until you print your boarding pass. They encourage it, but .... If you have to put in a DOB, put in your due date. Again, if it's a week off, who's going to know? They don't require a birth certificate for infants.

The only issue with this strategy would be if you were paying for your infant ticket and wanted FF credit for your infant (I got FF for mine, always). Then the name has to match. But since you booked a reward ticket, it won't matter. Enjoy Disney.

Best,
Mike
