On the Chicago to St.Louis train and the announcement was made that they are prohibited from selling alcohol while in Illinois. According to the cafe operator this memo was sent out today. Anyone know why?

Just a guess, but I would bet they either:

A. Forgot to pay their liquor license tax in IL somehow
B. Got dinged by IL for selling alcohol to minors, and are shut down pending remedial action.
C. Maybe IL has a madate for lower alcohol like some states (OK for example) but all they have is regular strength?

Betting it's A or B, I don't think IL has a 3.2% law.

Heck, you can buy Jack Daniels at your local Walgreens (at least in Chicago).

These were actually separate, for some reason. NC used to have a cap on the alcohol percentage in beer, but the easy argument to make was that anyone could buy Everclear in a (state-run) ABC store if they really just wanted alcohol.

That's how Oklahoma is. If you buy beer in a convenience store, it's 3.2%. If you buy imported, or craft beer, it has to be sold at a liquor store, and it can't be sold cold. (in the winter time, most stores keep their heat.....well, very very low let's say....the clerks wear parkas in a lot of em.....keeps em just above freezing, which, is legal, since it's not "refrigerated".....) Go figure. Stupid blue laws.....Restaraunts that sell both imported beers at a higher ABV, and the regular domestics at 3.2 are limited to when they can sell.....you can go to a restaruant at 1 PM on a sunday, and order a Bud Light, but they can't serve Dos Equis until after 2 PM, because it's higher ABV. Flippin rediculous. So, I expect it's some nuance with the Alcohol/Beverage agencies in IL, that put some kind of barrier up for selling in IL for the time being.

Michigan used to have a law that said alcohol couldn't been sold on Sunday mornings before noon. That's now been changed and requires a separate license, but I don't know if Amtrak got one.

The Ill thing sounds like a licensing issue to me.

Bob, you hit the nail on the head!

“There was a paperwork problem with our liquor license and as a precaution, yesterday, we briefly suspended liquor sales on our trains. By the end of the day, the liquor license had been obtained and we resumed liquor sales last night,” Magliari said.

Thanks for posting this -- the thread on Trainorders slipped by me. It's a much better site that FT for info on what's happening with trains, but they do charge if you want to write messages/ask questions.

Bob,

Tooting my own horn a bit, as I do help to run things, but for more Amtrak stuff try Amtrak Unlimited (http://discuss.amtraktrains.com/). Although there are discussions on other things too, the main focus is Amtrak. And no fees at all.
