Is there any must see Market/Department store in HK?

Just there for the day, and not really interested in the super high end malls.
I'll be in IFC for a bit during the morning. Is there a 'typical/normal' were locals shop that is close to Central or Jordan stations?

Thanks.
S.

The closest fresh market from the IFC is in Central, as stores and stalls lining Graham and Gage Streets, just a bit uphill from the Central Market, which is no longer a market. In the Jordan area, same along Reclamation Street, a couple blocks west of Temple St. Those are where locals buy fresh groceries traditionally. But more and more just get theirs at the supermarkets.

I'd suggest a visit to Yue Hwa. They are very close to Jordan MTR.

We're back in Yue Hwa last year, nice for unique, classic/traditional Chinese items hard to find elsewhere - under a single roof, not so great is price-wise & comparable items more expensive than the States & other shops (and no haggle on fixed prices)

If you are riding the MTR, go 2 more stops to the Langham Place Hotel/Shopping Mall on Shanghai St. @ Mong Kok Station, shopping mall & restaurants, mom-n-pop & chain stores on side streets & interesting places to walk thru, always crowded & a short walk from Ladies Market. True old markets for fish, meats, vegs. & produces have pretty much gone upscale & indoor ....

Otherwise, Kowloon's Hung Hom - Whampoa area with the Japanese supermarket & skating ring/indoor malls is always nice to visit, a bit out of your way on a 1 day stopover - there, you see the locals shop, socialize & eat, play & hangout, etc. Best way is to catch the inexpensive 16 pax. Public Mini Buses on fixed routes (sightsee along the way above ground) or cross-harbour ferry back to Wan Chai/Central area.

Wing On in Sheung Wan, or Sogo behind Times Square in Causeway Bay. The Causeway Bay area is really great just for roaming.

+1 for Langham. I hate shops but it is pretty decent.... I live in Hung Hom. Whampoa certainly isn't "destination" special, but it is pretty typical and not high end. If you are near IFC take the 182, 104, or better yet the 115 and get to Hung Hom. There isnt an easy train way to do it (takes 2 changes) Some very good "street food" as well as a wide assortment of restaurants...lots of regualar shops and a department store in a giant boat....Right by Hong Kong Polytechnic....
