I recently booked a couple of long-hauls on Japan Airlines with jpatokal jr's first ever own seat. I wanted to bring along our car seat, but mrs jpatokal wasn't convinced it was worth the hassle of hauling it around... so imagine my surprise when I found out that JAL offers a free "Child Seat Rental Service" for all their international sectors! Available for any child who is under 3 years old, 18 kg and 102 cm, just call up JAL's reservation hotline at least three days before your flight. Details here:

This seems like the greatest thing since sliced bread. ^ Does any other airline offer this? Even JAL's main competitor ANA doesn't seem to.

That's really great! The only other comparable thing I can think of is the Britax child seats on BA...
It would be helpful for more airlines to offer this. It also might push some families toward the choice of deciding to buy a seat (which they OUGHT to be doing anyway, but I digress). I like that they seem to be limiting availability to people who have paid for seats, too. (Their language: "* The customer is requested to make a reservation for one infant and pay child fare to occupy one seat.")

Good find: http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/travel-information/flying-with-children/children.html
They're not very clear on what the seat looks like, but as the range is newborn to 20kg, I presume it's an ordinary reversible car seat?

I've seen it in use with toddlers so forward facing but not with a baby, it looked pretty good though
