I am afraid AA is going to fold so I want to see if you guys can recommend a getaway for me and the wife from April 6- April 11 (do not have to use up all days) that can use some or all of these miles. I live in NYC and the destinations cannot be too far away. At first we thought of Puerto Rico but tickets prices seem unsreasonable. Any thought would be appreciated. Thanks.

AA is not going to fold, they have plenty of cash and a lot of dance partners to choose from.
Have you thought about using your AA miles for a trip to Bermuda?

Well please keep your negative thoughts to yourself, as I am currently racking up tons of miles for a dream Round the World Trip for me and the Wife for next year on them :)
How about Bermuda? I saw they have seats for those dates at 17.5K miles PP One Way so a total of 70K miles for you both... pretty good value.
Actually, I may go myself thinking of it...

Just make sure thr 17.5K miles are for zero transfers. I found lots of these tickets for PR but when you check the ticket info, they require 2-3 transfers. a 4hr direct flight turns into a 12hr debacle. Sigh...

Does it need to be Sunny? We just came back from Vancouver and had a great time...
It doesnt really have to be sunny but preferred but then again, we just want to travel to a new place and we have about 4 days.

Reykjavik, Iceland? Supposed to be fun, and pretty affordable right now due to currency issues.
Halifax, Nova Scotia...looks like there are tickets available to St. Kitts...

Maybe you should list everywhere you have every been that is sunny since I have batted a thousand thus far...
Would have said VI - But St Maarten only has a terrible 17.5K flight (3planes 24hrs..)
Also - London is weirdly cheap at 20K Miles, you could buy a few more to make up the amount you need. That would work for 80K for both of you. Paris has availability leaving on the Sat.. maybe those or another EU destination for something different?
I think I am spent for now, but will come back if something strikes me.
Regarding those discounted Citi Reward flights, they change every quarter, so April destinations are not posted yet, though most of them seem to be Domestic with some Canada... you may find something there.

How do you get to Iceland with AA? A few years ago I looked into it and the only way was to LHR, then taking Iceland Air or something...

At this time of year, you don't.
BA has had seasonal flights there from LGW (you have to fly to LHR then change airports, and in the past it was bad connection timing so you had to lose a day iin LON I think), but that's the summer season. Even if they will have them this summer (and I don't know if they will or won't), it'll not likely be by early April. (Only Icleand Air and SAS fly into Iceland year-round, per an article I read just the other day.)

AA is not going to "fold". It may merge, there's even a slight possibility it could be broken up and sold in pieces, but no matter what, its frequent flyer program, profitable all on its own (to the point where in the past some have asked for it to be spun off as a separate company), will survive, either as itself or merged with another frequent flyer program.
Furthermore, anything drastic like that, even if it did happen, will take years rather than weeks or months. UA and CO announced a long time ago that they will merge, and still today they have separate frequent flyer programs. (Originally the FFPs were going to merge on 1 Jan 2012, but now that's been delayed.)
Now, if you want to go someplace this April and miles make sense, go for it. But if it turns out the place you want to go is $300 round-trip, I wouldn't waste miles on that just because AA is in Chapter 11 reorganization.

Me and my wife have 75k AA miles too, and are trying to use them to go to hawaii in May-June. aa.com is not giving me any good options from the east coast to maui though.

Go to Rio. If you had more time, I'd say go to Cusco and do the Macchu Picchu thing.

LOL, been to London and Paris. St Maarten sounds good but the award ticket sucks as you mentioned. No worries, I appreciate all your thoughts.

Go to South America, will be 20k each way but you can buy some miles ;)

I would personally try to create an elaborate business class multi city oneworld award through Europe for 80k per person... but for that amount of time it might be easier to just do nonstop flights JFK-FCO on the 6th or 7th and FCO-JFK on the 10th, which are available in coach for 20k each way per person.
Rome is nice, tourist friendly and has plenty of stuff to see.

I did this with my Citi AA miles and loved it. I enjoyed LAN business class.

Requires a little finesse but I found AA's award program works the best for me.
Easy locations I can pull up 40k round trip always seem to be MXP and NRT.
