Oceania (Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific) - Hotel recommendations in / near Perth CBD

Greetings, all.

I'm going to be in Perth in early March for a quasi-business trip. To avoid car rental expenses, I'd like to stay in a hotel with walking distance (or at worst, less than 15 minutes via transit) from the CBD.

I'm not looking for any real amenities; a clean, quiet room is all that I require. I'm paying for this out of my own pocket (and cannot expense / claim on taxes - long story), so I'd like not to spend too much money; on the other hand, I don't want to cheap out and not be able to stand the room.

Despite having spent four years in Perth, I don't have a good feel for the hotel situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

TB-ES

As a start search http://www.wotif.com [with good maps]
Booking direct with a hotel, instead on through 3rd party web sites can cheaper.
All depends on you budget and if you want to stay in chain for loyalty/freq flyer reasons.

Your budget is a bit vague, but the Holiday Inn Perth City Centre may fit the bill -- see this thread:

Not sure it meets your 15 minutes from the CBD requirement (it may be a bit longer but you would need to check), but the Country Comfort Inter City Hotel is a place I stayed at ~10 years ago, and was happy with. It is closer to the airport than the CBD, but is on a main road and has a free shuttle to/from the airport.

I presume (again, you would need to check this, as I never utilised it) there is a bus service to the CBD.

It is on wotif.com

Intentionally so; it's not that I can't afford a higher end hotel, it's that I'm trying to avoid paying for amenties I wouldn't use. Having an iron to touch up shirts / suits is about the only thing I'd want apart from a quiet, clean room.

Will check out your recommendation.

So I ended up staying here: Goodearth Hotel (http://www.goodearthhotel.com.au/)

Not awful, but I can't really recommend it.

Still, if price is your primary driver, it may be worth a look.

Will be there next week and not looking forward to it, bit of a dump imho.
The Ambassador across the road (same owner) is marginally better but still nothing great.

The Parmelia Hilton (http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/PERHITW/index.do;jsessionid=3DD15E1E4FC4681FF9CBE4E23DFEBC A0.etc57?xch=1297216858,v9gcP85TGhm8GnbtF44G8L3yhC mGG2Nmk2gp3D9Pc3BynH2QmM6r!599843188!1333541235630&)is nice.

Resurrecting this thread rather than starting a new one ...

Will be hitting PER again in March; this time there will be at least three of us on a fully-expensed business trip.

No status (yet) with any of the major chains. Would prefer a hotel in the western half of the CBD or West Perth. Close to a Red CAT stop would be ideal.

Price (within reason) is not a major driver of the decision.

Recommendations?

Note that any Transperth bus traversing a CAT-covered area is free, so you don't have to stay on a CAT route.

I usually stay with Verandah apartments in Northbridge. CBD hotels in Perth are off the scale pricewise for very ordinary facilities.

Those apartments are mostly near the Blue CAT route but more often I just jump any bus going down Fitzgerald St to the CBD - like I said, it's free between Newcastle St and the CBD- or walk.

Western end of the CBD (where almost all the oil & gas companies are, if that's your line) is all walkable, and the Red CAT will take you up the hill into West Perth. In fact, business in the whole CBD is walkable by using CATs and all the other free buses. I never rent a car in Perth.

I lived in PER for four years, mostly in the CBD / Subi - so I'm familiar with Transperth's FFZ. Only been in one hotel, though. (after I moved away - details upthread, don't want to stay there again). The offices we will be visiting are literally across the street from a Red CAT stop in West Perth, which is why I said that proximity to a Red CAT stop would be ideal.

Costs (within reason) are not a barrier; convenience and business facilities (reliable wifi, etc.) are the primary drivers.

I'm currently leaning toward the Parmelia Hilton, but I'm open to other recommendations. I'll bite the bullet once the dates have been firmed up - which should happen at the end of February (On the other hand, as my ex-boss told me before I moved there, "You'll soon discover that WA stands for Wait Awhile").

Thanks for the input, though.

OK, I guess it depends whether you think whatever the Hilton is asking is within reason.

I've stayed at most of the western CBD hotels at one time or another and don't think the $300-$400 plus fee for Wi-Fi they typically ask these days whenever I've been looking is worth it. Hopefully you'll be getting a better deal, unfortunately I'm not usually in a position to book more than a week in advance.
