I understand that an award stay now counts as a stay, but do you get miles the way you do on a paid stay?

In theory no. In practice "some good friends of mine" have at times received miles. It depends on how the front desk codes the RSVP at check-in.

OK this how it appears to work.
If my award stay posts without my contacting the service center I would say miles post about 50% of the time.
If I have to submit a request(since I always have some point earning charges on award stays) over the phone or on-line I get miles 100% of the times.

In 2002 five award stays I got miles 3 times.

Overall on award stays I have gotten miles
about 50% of the times.

You still get points for eligible charges to your room on a reward stay. Phone charges, minibar, room service, PPV movies, and meals in the hotel restaurant (when billed to your room) should all earn you points. Then just pay your hotel bill with the mileage-earning credit card of your choice.

I got 500 miles for my award stay at Hilton Brussels City last year. I had meal charges on my folio, though.

So I should make sure I have some charges to my room, which probably won't be difficult. Am I correct in getting free breakfast as a Hilton Gold on an award stay? Just charging tips to the room will do it.

I guess it was a mistake, but from my award stay last Fall at the Singapore Conrad I got 500 points, 500 airline miles, 500 "airline partner" points, as well as points for my purchases in the gift shop and the gold bonus points. All this and it was a point stretcher stay! I think I was pretty lucky.

A couple of weeks ago I used 17500 points for two nights at a Scandic and I got 2000 points plus a 500 point bonus! I don't think I got airline miles.

A few other stays on the same trip have failed to post so I think I'm going to ask for credit!

Hold on here, not because you did not get miles means you are supposed to get them by the program rules.
The way understand it that instances where miles have been awarded is because the system does not recognize the stay as an award.
I have been told by HHonors more than once that is not supposed to get airline miles, rental car and elite bonuses on award stays.
For me I feel fortunate when I do get miles,
but earlier on (in 1998??) when I found out that points were given on award stays my submission for miles were denied.

I had my first award stay last weekend. I was a little surprised, but I didn't get any statement of charges either in my room overnight, or when I checked out in the morning.

When I looked at my Hhonors account on the web a few days later, there was a folio of $13.33, payment type was my credit card, and I was issued base points, 50% bonus and Silver bonus based on that amount (218 points). I called and asked what these charges were for, thinking that they had charged me for something. I was told, "there is nothing that's being charged to you." I'm not sure if this is a points glitch, if I will get a small surprise on my credit card statement, or if something else is going on.

You should not be charged anything to your credit card-- this amount appears because this is the amount that the hotel will charge HHonors for the award. Whether or not you will get to keep the points is anyone's guess...it's almost always hit and miss. Good luck!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. When I went to London July 2003 (I *had* to take the quintessential Europe-after-you-graduate-from-college trip) I missed my flight home (!) and had to stay at the Hilton London Heathrow Airport using an award stay for 35,000. Not only did I receive the base points (1,500) but also a Silver VIP bonus (225) and I double dipped (500) with United Air Lines. I was also roomed on the Executive Level and had comp snacks, treats, high-speed Internet and great conversation with hotel staff. Not bad for a broke 22 year old college grad, eh?
