My wife of four months and I are in desperate need of a honeymoon. We live about 15 minutes from DCA, but have access to IAD and BWI as well. We can leave as early as March 3 and return as late as March 12.

I have Premier status (lowest level) with United and would like to fly with them or a partner airline.

Right now we are leaning towards Thailand. I never been to Thailand and don't know much about it beyond the basics. We aren't exactly flush with cash either: our budget is in the $4000 to $5000 range. Flights on United over those days are roughly $1350 r/t per person and we are hoping it will be relatively inexpensive after we get there.

Any and all advice, including telling us to go somewhere else (closer to DC? Caribbean?), is appreciated!

Awfully long brutal flight in Y (& the resultant jet-lag) for basically a week vacation IMO. IIWY I'd be thinking Central & S America & the Caribbean. Wait 'till you've got 2 weeks at least, for Thailand. wj

Thanks, wj, I think you're right. We had a discussion along those lines as well.

A few other things I should mention: we are in our mid-twenties, I have been to Hong Kong but she has never been to Asia, neither of us has been to the Caribbean or Central or South America. We are open to nearly anything.

How many miles do you have saved up? And what program?

I have 31,500 with DL and my wife has 20,000 with DL.

I have 37,500 with UA and my wife has 15,000 with UA.

I agree I would wait until you had a good amount of time for thailand.. In the mean time I would accrue your miles and save for a business award or upgrade..

Alright, has anyone done the SEA-DBX flight in coach yet? How bad is it? I'm looking into going to Thailand via Dubai and the 15 hour flight in coach scares me a bit. My wife and I are both short and not especially big people, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Never flown Emirates before but I've heard great things about their service. Anyone done this flight before (or a similar lenght trip from SFO or LAX) and can tell me it isn't that bad?

I flew LAX-DXB close to 17 hours in economy with my fiancée one year ago. Just make sure you get an exit row. Emirates is pretty nice with the stats on the ceiling and the food was what you expect free mini bottles of alcohol and the entertainment system was the best party about it. Also the staff on flight was top notch. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Oops, looks like I posted this in the wrong forum. Thanks much for the response, though. Sounds like if you're going to spend 15 hours on a plane, you could do far, far worse than Emirates.

Way too far for too short a vacation. Try SXM. You'll love it.

As well it should. There must be a longer way to get to Thailand from SEA, but I just can't think of it right now. :D

Have you considered connecting in ICN, NRT or TPE? All have good connections, without too much time on the ground in the connecting city. If you aren't familiar with EF or similar, let me know by PM and I'll be happy to give you some specific routings.

Thailand is def not my cup of tea, never was. It's pretty and I am sure it has it's fans, but it just seem like a layer of dirt covering it. The sex industry is fairly overt there and in your face. If you do go, make sure it is to the islands, like Phuket or Koi Samut and not just straight to Bangkok.

congrats! :)

wow, really? So you're an American GI judging by your username. A little R&R in Thailand then?

I agree with other posters, a week really isn't enough time (since it takes 24 hours to get there and another to get back). But if you're set then it is do-able on your budget. You will need to watch your budget on hotels and domestic flights. I say domestic flights because I don't think Bangkok is the greatest place to go for a honeymoon. Most couples go to the beach or up to the hill country for nature type adventures.

I've considered it, but EK gives me EQMs at about $600 per flight cheaper than other airlines in my network (Alaska). I'm also planning a stopover in Dubai to break up the trip a bit.
