Hawaii-based Airlines - Help with interisland Hawaii
Hi everyone
I need suggestion for interisland flight in Hawaii. I have AA, BA, and AMEX MR points. I checked on using AA miles but I don't think It is possible. Where can I transfer AMEX MR points so I can possibly get flight on points.
Thanks

There's always a lively discussion of this topic in both the Hawaiian airlines forum and the Hawaii destination forum.
Check the threads, but I believe your salvation will be the unlikely transfer to MR points to Virgin Atlantic. Last I recall, something like 6000 miles for an interisland roundtrip. Follow the instructions carefully -- including making sure seats are available on the days you want before transferring.

The AA Partner Award Chart shows Hawaii inter-island flights available for 5000 miles (one-way.) Look at the third from the right space near the top of the chart.
http://www.aa.com/i18n/disclaimers/aadvantageAllPartnerChart.jsp
I got the link from The Points Guy's "Consolidated List of Airline Award Charts and Partner Airline Lists." Hawaiian Airlines is listed as an AA partner.

However, I don't know whether The Points Guy info is up to date or not.

USAir has 10000 rt reward flights. Do MR points transfer to any Star A partners that you could use on US?

Yes, but then what US Air would charge is irrelevant. You pay the redemption rates of the program whose miles you are using. So you need to find an MR partner that offers inter-island redemptions on either HA, or one of the smaller carriers that offers inter-island flights.

BA miles won't help you, but either AA or MR points should be able to get you tickets.
One key to keep in mind when booking interisland tickets is that HA does not provide nearly as much access to partners for low level award seats as they show being available to Hawaiian miles members. Thus, the most certain way to score award tickets would be to transfer MR points directly to HA and book through HA. The problem with this is that HA charges 15k for a RT while Virgin Atlantic has been charging 6k. To find out which seats have been made available to partner airlines, I have found the CO booking tool to be the best. You should check there whether you decide to try to use AA miles or transfer MR points to someone other than HA.

I was planning on doing this through CO. The CO site shows a bunch of seats available on HA. Is this accurate or will there be issues? Thx

If you're using CO/UA miles then of course what you see is what you get. Even for other partners of HA, I'd say the CO search is at least a good indicator of availability if not right on.

Great, thx. Agreed, the CO search is the best.

We just did this....I went with Hawaiian Airlines with a transfer from MR. You can get flights at 7.5K if you look (reg is 10K)
Last year I used AA miles. I think it was 5000 but I could only call to book and it cost me $30 for a ticket. $25 for the phone fee!!! No way to book online. And there wasn't very good availability....
And if you need to make changes it is easier to do with tickets purchased through Hawaiian as you can do it online. I had to make a change to the interisland ticket purchased with AA and it was a pain to do over the phone. And once again limited availability.

We used OnePass miles for Island Air. It was 5000 miles per ticket per flight. Be careful, the planes have next to no room for carryon and charge $15 per luggage for a one hour flight...

I think 7.5K one way is standard coach.

Interesting. I never thought of that. We just flew HA interisland and carried our "usual" amount of luggage onto the 717. But if you fly one of the Island Air props, you don't get a similar amount of "gate checked" luggage free?

Island Air
You do get to take one carry one and one personal item......
$15 first checked bag. Here are the dimensions for Island Air:
Under seat dimensions: 10″ H x 30″ W x 14″ L
Overhead bin dimensions:
8.5″H x 45.5″L x 17.5″W (pull up door)
7″H x 37″L x 14″W (pull down door)
Honestly I read a ton of bad reviews about Island Air and decided to stick with Hawaiian for my inter-island. Have been taking them the last few years and been very happy. Most negative reviews are based on cancelled and late flights. I would be very concerned if I were taking them to catch a connection....if they are late it might be a problem.

I try to stick with Hawaiian so I don't know how Island Air would be as a connecting flight, but when checking in directly with them for a flight this past Nov, they required weighing of carry-on luggage to ensure no more than 15 lbs per carry-on.

VS miles are easy to get even without the BofA credit card.
Every Hertz or Avis rental earns 1100 miles on VS.

I would just go the route of using the MR points to move into virgin...being sure to look for your flights on CO if they are available...i guess 10k CO miles wouldn't be that bad to use though..

The 2-seat side holds 22" roll-a-boards sideways. The 3 seat side holds them wheels in. Lots of room on the 717. It's actually a very nice plane.
