Headed to AKL (typo in the title, sorry, I do know how to spell Auckland) for 2 weeks in october this year. Aiming to get 2 tickets in biz class and have a few options to do so, but don't know the AKL market to know if timing makes a difference. Possibly doing a 2-3 day stopover in SYD if feasible to see friends.
1) a big IF - if CO gets their 787 and starts HOU-AKL, I can buy ticket in C and get a free companion ticket. Probably around $5k is my guess, then split by 2 and earn full EQM on both
2) pay for eligible UA fare to SYD and upgrade with miles/$/SWU though would have to trade as while i think i'll hit 1K this year, more likely after the trip.
3) pay for premium economy to either AKL or SYD and get separate ticket to AKL
4) use AS miles to book in J via one of their partners (quantas, korean, cathay, emerates, etc)
What's going to be the most cost efficient, and under what timing should I book this (today, in may, 1 month before, etc?). This is for departure from SEA.
