LY316 on Thursday was delayed nearly 20 hours arriving minutes before shabbas, religious passengers were transfered by bus straight from the aircraft to a hotel in Bnei Brak.

Anyone know the reason of this delay?

I have no absolutely idea. I wasn't sure why the flight is delayed due to shabbat. Maybe TLV is closed due to shabbat. I think the flight is canceled. They didn't being cancelled the flight.

Did they even go through customs and passport control?

TLV is not closed on Shabbat, though LY doesn't operate on Shabbat.

What do you mean by bussed from the a/c straight to the hotel? Did they not go through immigration and customs?sounds like a security breach to me...

No, actually, where you go through security checkpoint then ongoing to passport control right after you prior check-in counter.

According to this scource (http://www.bhol.co.il/article.aspx?id=37027), the passports were stapmed quickly on the tarmac. I assume (as in previous similiar situations) they didn't collect their luggage, and will have to come back tonight to collect it and pass through customs.

Anyhow qudos for Elal for putting in such emergency plans.

I wonder if this happens a lot and how much does this "service" cost to LY.

It sounds like it landed just after Shabbat started. My friend's friend was on the flight, and they went in ZAKA ambulances driven by non-Jews.

well same thing happened 2 weeks ago also from heathrow, according to this source both incidents together cost LY about half million shekels.

Friend's husband was on flight. He says that sat over hours on the tarmac, they served a meal on the plane and then deplanned. He opted not to take the later flight because he was nervous because of Shabbat and instead flew out Motzei Shabbat. HIs luggage was on the delayed plane and arrived in Israel ahead of him.

According to this guys story (http://www.kikarhashabat.co.il/הטיסה-נחתה-סמוך-לשבת-נוסע-אל-ע.html) and from what awayigo wrote it doesn't look like Elal did a good job there.

Read the article, I disagree completely, Elal did a great job.
Those passengers shouldn't have taken such big risks and stayed in London!

it does look like they did a good job..I think i read somewhere in the comments that folks who wanted to stay in the hotel over shabbat in London and grab a sat night flight could...(of course access to food and keeping shabbat in a hotel with those cards can be hard).

They did the right thing by not compromising on safety.

Isn't that a pretty major security breach? Surely if he didn't fly on that aircraft his luggage should not have either, or have I misunderstood your post?

If you make it on the plane and your luggage doesn't, your luggage will need to be sent later, with you not on the plane. It happens that people and the luggage will part for the flight.
This isn't a case of someone deciding not to fly at the last minute, but leaving his luggage on the plane. It's something going terribly wrong, and him not being able to fly anymore because a delay that he had zero to do with, so LY allowing him to fly a different flight. His bag had already been screened.

Corrected my unclear post.
Seeing the correction, I must say I agree wholeheartedly! (In this regard. I'm sure there are times that they DON'T use common sense ;))
