I'm sure one of the New Management persons will help us sort this out. Now would be the time, since my CO one pass account is empty. How about BUY your new Acct #? This will get Jeff's attention. That way you'll still have the same number, but represented by different digits. Then just convert it back to Base 10 (decimal format) when you need to. ironmanjt Jan 20, 12, 10:54 am I'd pay for a new id. I need a good number of my choice to support my new "United Image". MBS PremExec Jan 20, 12, 11:17 am Now that would be kinda cool - kinda like personalized license plates. I'd be up for it... Losing the MP numbers is really a shame. My mom's, dad's, my brother's and my numbers are all sequential...REALLY easy for keeping track of everyone's stuff, now we've got FRs and GDs and LQs with numbers that make no sense. mherdeg Jan 20, 12, 11:17 am Nothing prevents you from opening a new OnePass account, using it heavily, and trying to cajole an agent into merging your two accounts into your newer one. I just wanted to pick the first 2 letters so it meant something to me as I am sad to be loosing the MP number I have used since 1984. Anyway i think i will call just to hear them laugh out loud. And yes, definitely a first world problem on a Friday morning. exerda Jan 20, 12, 12:14 pm UA has said that no, new numbers will not be granted on request. (I don't have the link handy, but it's in one of the UA Insider announcement threads on numbers.) I'd pay for a new id. I need a good number of my choice to support my new "United Image". [Of course 1K's get a discount [s]. GS don't need a number. They are known upon sight!] UA could monetize this after all... yes, I'd pay a small amount to change my OP #, as it starts with "XR" and is hard to get the phone voice recognition system to pick up properly (usually takes me at least two tries). dgdevil Jan 20, 12, 12:17 pm Don't be ridiculous. I haven't used it for years, and yet I remember it and the pin as clearly as when I first got it 24 years ago. By contrast, I've had my MP number for 21 years, and I still haven't managed to memorize it. entrada Jan 20, 12, 1:06 pm My OP # starts with AC. And when I call CO and the automated system asks for my number it NEVER has heard the AC correctly. It always interprets it as AD. At least with my MP number I can enter it on the phone keypad. With the CO accounts have two letters I don't think you can use the keypad, can you? So they need to improve the voice recognition system I think. Or I need to speak my ACs better. Which isn't likely I guess.... DawgmanOH Jan 20, 12, 1:07 pm I like my OnePass number but hate having to get it recognized by the voice system. Usually takes 2+ times to have it recognize me. ianmanka Jan 20, 12, 1:12 pm I've liked mine, but because the first two letters made sense to me for the account. "CL" instantly associates the mess of numbers to ContinentaL. While this reasoning will soon be invalid, I'll still be able to remember it quite easily. jastr Jan 20, 12, 1:15 pm I actually like the (newly minted, randomly assigned) one I recently got. Enough internal structure that it's much easier to memorize than my MP number. CMK10 Jan 20, 12, 1:16 pm Mine starts with JB773, I always wished an airline with the code JB would get a 777-300 to make my number that much cooler. Which isn't likely I guess.... Yes, you can use the keypad to enter a OnePass number. Just enter the letters as they appear on the numeric buttons on your phone. It works. UA-NYC Jan 20, 12, 1:32 pm Yes, you can use the keypad to enter a OnePass number. Just enter the letters as they appear on the numeric buttons on your phone. It works. I would say keying in my OP# on the CO IVR "takes" maybe 50% on the first attempt (vs. near-100% on UA). Of course, YMMV. jlemon Jan 20, 12, 1:38 pm I don't like my OnePass Number. And I broke up the numbers into three pairs and then thought of three events that happened in that year of the 20th century. So if my number was HY417496 (it isn't), I'd remember it by: USA enters the 2nd world war; Nixon resigns; Atlanta olympics. After a few times where I had to go through this consciously, it became unconscious. But that may make me weird... wendySFO Jan 20, 12, 4:23 pm Funny thread in a raining Friday afternoon :p I joined OnePass only recently, no clue how their numbering system works. When I signed up last week, this is exactly what I received - the first two letters are indeed the last and first letters of my first name. However, in reading this thread, I think I was having my leg pulled as no one else has pointed this out. Otherwise my new number is quite the coincidence and very easy to remember! :) jsl42 Jan 20, 12, 6:47 pm Don't be ridiculous. Unless it has a 666 in it, get on with your day. My dad's is XX 666 XXX. I don't even remember what my MP number looks like, it's just a random string of numbers with some redundant zeros at the beginning! However, if this were the biggest issue with this merger then I'd be pretty excited... youreadyfreddie Jan 20, 12, 8:28 pm Don't be ridiculous. Unless it has a 666 in it, get on with your day. Oooh! QBK Jan 20, 12, 8:36 pm Mine starts with ur also so guess u r one up on me:p Nice. ^ Now I'm trying to come up with a valid number that forms a complete (and humorous or offensive) sentence. I know this is stupid but why would anyone want/need to memorize the number? besides if you every get alheimer's you will really be up a creek without a paddle. My card is in my wallet, first thing I see when I open it. Interesting. I've had my AS number memorized for over a decade. Memorized my UA number within a year of starting to fly UA seriously... memorized my CO number a few months after status matching... and mostly memorized my US number during Grand Slam last year. Anything that I use to log on (or have to put in to a lot of forms) I end up memorizing pretty fast. I'm usually sitting on my wallet when I'm scrounging miles on the internet, so it's a pain to get out my cards. xFF Jan 20, 12, 8:42 pm Mine has four "8". I think I should auction it off in asia :)Unless FT sponsored a Liar's Poker round using MP numbers. Then, you'd stand a good chance of winning (not now, of course, that you've shown your hand...or is he bluffing...). Second prize in the tournament could be two trips in CO domestic F. First prize could be one trip. anc-ord772 Jan 20, 12, 8:47 pm I will miss my MP number very much. v2.0 is just a bunch of random letters and numbers which sound odd to me. Give me 20 years, I'm sure I'll be fine. This is a silly thread. Thanks OP. blackjack-21 Jan 20, 12, 8:57 pm Mrs. bj-21's OP number starts with DL, which I was concerned about as it was also the airline indicator of a small, competing airline in another alliance. I thought someone at CO would somehow miscontrue it as a DL FF number. Hasn't happened yet so all is well. bj-21. With the way that Jeff Smisek is portrayed on FT, my question is is he is going to be looking at me as a potential partner or competition? :p awerdna2002 Jan 21, 12, 7:45 am People get weirdly attached to numbers. Back in the 80's a friend moved to LA area. His lifestyle was somewhat like Charlie Sheen in "Two and a Half Men". The phone number he received spelled "the stud" which of course he thought was the greatest thing in the world. Then after a couple years he wanted to move to San Diego but couldn't bear to lose the phone number, so he actually stayed in LA for a few more years just to keep the number! (Follow-up to the story... today he's a middle aged guy in his second marriage and drowing under alimony payments, kids' college expenses, and a big mortgage... and probably wishing he had the old lifestyle and number back!) emcampbe Jan 21, 12, 9:14 am Chanba has the right idea here - I've seen a lot of silly FT threads, but this one is near, if not at the top. I don't like the fact that the metal detector in use at my home airport in CVG gets set off by my belt, despite this not happening at any other airport. But guess what - I eventually learned I have to remove it temporarily, send it through x-ray and put it back on after. Guess what - I still get on my way, get to my flight, and go where i need to go. Agree otherwise open another account use it, and then in about a year say "I just realized I had two accounts..." Wait, you just said that.... Enrolling in a second account for the same person is almost definitely a violation of the OP terms of service. Not to mention, the OP may get a number they hate equally or more. Sockgap Jan 21, 12, 11:03 am Assigning numbers like this is a huge deal in China. Because Chinese words tend to be short, all words have a lot of different meanings, including the words for numbers. That means a phone number can be construed to sound like various sentences if you say it right (with the right pitches) and everybody wants a number that sounds good. I read an article by a British guy who moved to Hong Kong and his randomly assigned phone number sounded a bit like "you'll never get rich, you'll definitely never get rich" in Cantonese. He got so much ribbing for having that number, he had to bribe the phone company to change it to something that sounded better. I haven't really been paying much attention so I didn't notice that they had found my OP# which I swore I hadn't used since college a decade ago, but lo and behold has a whopping 5000+ miles and 9000+ lifetime miles! Life is grand. But in any case it was only one address change behind and it was already linked up. And speaking of sexual suggestion, my two letters are quite easy to remember. Then the first three numbers make me think of "1 on 1" so that seals it for me. But all I could think of when I learned that my OP# was going to become my new MP# was: "Where is that thread about the least substantive thing I could complain about?" And then I found you! Oh happy day. I know my number so well I 10-key it without actually thinking about what the number is. And it is remarkably suited for 10-keying. (Among other things I manage a data-entry operation.) And even though the self-check kiosks don't follow traditional 10-key layouts, I type that in mostly by muscle memory too. Someone asked why we would possibly want to memorize all these numbers. I would ask the same about keeping yet another bulky card in a wallet. And regarding Alzheimer's, I would say that I will forget where I put my darn card about a thousand times before my memory ever goes. But then again, I don't keep contacts in my phone because I memorize all my friends' and coworkers' phone numbers. Can you tell how thrilled I am about this thread? I'm very sorry. nov11 Jan 25, 12, 12:15 am My PMUA MP number has "666" in it, but I survived :D - in fact, UA treated me really well! My PMCO OP number has a lot of 4s and 5s - not the most auspicious numbers in Asia, especially when it could mean "don't die" and "not easy" in Cantonese. :p I am just glad I don't have "5354" in my number. :p |
