Hello I'm planning to visit Argentina... but I'm hearing alot about mendoza and cordoba as well, which has made me second guess about whether or not I should go to Buenos Aires.

I'm looking for good food and having fun with girls from Argentina. Let me know which city would be best for this. I really know nothing about traveling down there so I appreciate being educated by anyone's words of wisedom and advice. Thanks

Welcome to Flyertalk, fay637. There is a great Argentina Forum on FT. The Moderator of the Forum is a long time resident and he and others are very willing to assist folks with questions re: Buenos Aires.
I am moving the thread to the Argentina forum. Please see: Travel &Dining>The World>Argentina.
Have fun.

Personally I'd rather goto Mendoza. If you're American that is.

I wasn't impressed with Buenos Aires in the month I spent there. It is the NYC of Argentina (expensive and friendliness). The more you get out of BA the friendlier people become.

To each his/her own.... alas, I think its still very hard to justify that Mendoza has more to offer than Buenos Aires. The only exception to this, of course, would be if you are going to be Skiing, or climbing the Andes, or are looking to visit Wine Country.

I would say remove Cordoba from your list... unless you have friends or family there. See my above post also....

For good food, check out the F&B thread where there is a ton of information and updated reviews from all those that visit and frequently post here.

On your desire to have fun with the girls, I would say the following:

a) congratulations on your refined taste
b) bring on your top game, you´re gonna need it to get "some"
c) if your offering of point b) above is not up to par for local standards, see point d)
d) bring US$ cash and go to a "reputable" place of ill-repute

The girls in places like those mentioned in d) are not always from Argentina, although you can console yourself with the fact that they are at least Buenos Aires residents. Have fun and please do not forget that latex is your friend.

Sound advice from Gaucho100K. ^

The girls are lovely, so lovely in fact that I married one. A bit of advice though....treat them with respect and be prepared to wait a while to win them over.....they ain't no mugs.

I can understand Jesperss view...a month in Buenos Aires without getting out of it would drive me crazy as well. Although I can't imagine why anyone would visit Argentina for the first time and not go to Buenos Aires. Considering all the long haul International flights arrive and depart from there it would be kind of silly not to spend a few days there.

My point was to say he'll stand a better chance of picking up women in Mendoza than he would in Buenos Aires. :)

There are some beautiful women in Argentina, no doubt. However you'll have to work for it. FYI saying you're from the USA will work against you in Argentina. :p

Im sorry, but I think you dont quite understand Argentine Society. Its even harder to score with a local girl if she is from the Provinces, and even more so if you meet her in her Province. If a Provincial girl is in Buenos Aires, you have a slightly better chance.... but still all my points of my above posts still stand.

In the provinces, families are far more traditional so a toad from an outside pond will get heavy scrutiny. If a girl is away from home, she will enjoy more liberties and it may be a little easier to approach her..... but it still wont be easy.

Please note that this applies to properly educated middle+ class family situations... if you are willing to venture out into the second belt of the greater Buenos Aires and mix with the masses, well then a different set of rules and traditions apply, but I honestly dont know all the nuances & details of what the accepted rules of engagement are... other than the night out in a working-class environment in Argentina is very complicated and can be very dangerous.

All I can say is that most foreign males looking for "easy prey" that dont know the "codigos de la noche" would not survive one nights partying without a serious knife wound or perhaps even a few bullet holes...... unless he is a Navy Seal in which case he will be able to defend himself but would end up arrested in some difficult district like Berazategui or Florencio Varela, while being hosted by Buenos Aires' finest (La Bonaerense)..... so, bottom line, party animals beware... you have been given notice.

Genius Post! I agree 100%. You will have a better time if you enjoy partying and your night is not ruined if you don't bag a local.

I am blushing from your flatery. Stop. We NYers try our best, but are we really that good? Thanks!;)

I don't know why American= desire to be in Mendoza. I think both places are worth a visit but for any trip of extended term (1 month +) I need to be in city.

Again another classic post! I'm gonna start printing these out and giving them to my U.S. friends when they ask about Argentine women.

If you think women in the U.S. give you a cold shoulder you have never tried smooth talking a Porteña. They will brush you aside quicker than a gringo can say "hola!".

No but in all seriousness, to the OP it is not that difficult. If you stick to Palermo Soho you will meet some women. If you already know some castellano that will infinitely increase your chances. Otherwise start picking up some slang and get ready to party late.

Also being from the U.S. culture of binge drinkers you will need to slow down when chilling with porteños. This will be aided by the painful two line system most BsAs nightclubs enforce. You buy a drink ticket and then you redeem the ticket for a drink at the bar. It is painful.

Good luck.

FWIW I really enjoyed Cordoba and a visit to Santa Catalina, one of the Jesuit missions around the city so would recommend a visit of you have time and can fit it into an itinerary. :)
