Say one is commuting from CT and they go to Harlem 125th street and then walk to the 2/3 for a train to midtown. Is it possible to get any kind of transfer to the subway included or must one pay a new fare for the subway (i.e. Metro North + subway fare)? I looked online and didn't find an obvious answer to this question that must come up a lot. Thanks!

I believe it's possible to buy a Metro North ticket with a Metrocard on the back so both are a single piece of paper. But you still have to pay the subway fare in addition to the Metro North fare.

+1 - And it's for RT on Metro North only. Not a good idea unless you are a regular rider and just don't want two fare cards to confuse. Single ride on subway is only $2.50 and it's easier just to buy it at your first station. If you are in NY for a period of time, various other options available and can be reviewed on Metro North and MTA websites.

LOL I prefer to be legal. But this isn't actually for me - I thought I heard somewhere that a free transfer was possible, but I guess not. :(

That's correct. No free transfer.
