Maybe you've come across these things, maybe not, but I was interested to know if any of them are reliable, i.e. legit? And, how exactly do they get you the deep discounts for premium cabins?
All my travel is paid for by my employer, but a friend of mine got a quote of $3980 in First Class on Lufthansa from YUL to TLV (via ORD, FRA)
When checking LX's J class price it came out to $4001 (via ZRH)
So, is this too good to be true, or is there some substance to this.

I belive he used http://http://promosclasseaffaires.com/ (http://www.promosclasseaffaires.com/)
Upon checking the website, it appears they even have local number (514 is YUL area code)
I also came across http://www.accessfares.com
They seem to be legitimate, but I'm still wondering how they can get the premium cabin fares so low....

I always look up who these people are first:

Then I look up who the people are who are supposedly running it:

Then I look up where the "business" is located:

or
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3325-Laurel-Oak-St-Fort-Lauderdale-FL-33312/43220448_zpid/
For this one, I ask myself, "Why is someone running this business from a house in Florida"? "Why are they also running a telmarketing and outsourcing company?" "Why does their other webpage say they are located in Israel?"
A lot of these companies (and I don't know if this particular one is doing this) are purchasing FF miles and then booking award seats, that they are charging you for. This is against the rules of every FF program I know anything about, and if the airline finds out, your ticket will be cancelled.
EX-YUL both LH & LX do offer various First Class promos via certain agents, but this fare is wayyy too low to be something like that. The low fare and wierd YUL-ORD-FRA-TLV route makes me agree with 6rugrats

As you are in Montreal, start with this group who are also Virtuoso members- they have been able to save my colleagues and I money from time to time and they are based in Montreal:Imperial Travel

Thanks!
I've used them a few times for personal trips. Great staff.
Susan at Imperial is a top air agent.....not 100% sure they sit as well with LH/LX/AC as they use to, but certainly worth a conversation

I think it was her who got me a free upgrade to Business Elite the one time I had to fly delta last year

I think they are doing quite a bit of business with LX and the ZRH/YUL route- which has F so there may be some interesting promotions available (by full C/fly F type- which means for ~4500 EUR you may be able to get an F r/t).

Might have to try that out sometime ;)

Best option would be Air Canada via YYZ, or UA through EWR.
LX via ZRH is also a nice option but the layover is long.
You can check out Delta via JFK or BA through LHR as well.
AC remains my top suggestion though.

Some of these sites are bartering miles. Against airline rules but some of them are honest.

Smarter Traveler used to have a decent section to find cheap business class seats. I use a place called letsflycheaper.com to book most of my business class trips. They are legit, no B.S

Funny thing is, when I contacted them over a month ago they quoted me the same Business class price as I could get directly from the airline. Go figure.

How do legitimate places get you a lower fare from the airline than you can find online?

Consolidator or Corporate discount (i.e. the agency has a large enough volume they can get a discount for their customers- usually only on certain routes).
