Travel Tools - *AwardFinder - Free Web-based *A Award Search

jyflyer
Jan 16, 12, 12:33 pm
Thought I'd share an app I wrote with you guys to help in searching for *A awards.

Wrote this app for myself so I could save the trouble of logging into ANA and doing the search. The app also allows for multiple day searches so I would not need to repeat the search multiple times. Results are completely based on ANA's output. There are several upcoming features but I've yet to make them production ready.

I decided to make the app available to the public so everyone can use it to search for *A award inventory. I'm currently hosting it on an extra rackspace server I have so hopefully it's responsive enough! It's completely free for now, but I may put some ads on it in the future to cover hosting costs - if the demand is high.

Just enter the origin, destination (in airport code), date as well as number of days forward the app should search and click Search! Results are shown in real time as the search is being completed. The current UI isn't ideal but I will be improving on it continuously. Do let me know via this thread if there are any problems.

To access the app, click on this link! http://awardfinder.juny4ng.com

Terrific resource! :-: Thanks so much. One question: when the result for business class says "connecting flights," what does that mean? Are seats available or not?
Cheers,

Great tool!
Sme suggestions:
- To make it easier to find what you want: what about color coding the results (available F seats in red, C seats in blue and Y seats in green)?
- Set the tables in html to a fixed with to make it easier to read and/or remove the header for each connection
- Add a filter to show only Itinaries where at least one flight has F or Y availability
- Add the number of passengers (or repeat the search automatically and show the number of available seats)

Nice tool, except that I am getting some weird results. In several cases, it says "Connecting Flights" (???) for availability in C. I think it is incorrect interpretation of C~ that ANA gives...

Connecting Flights is actually Restricted. I'm currently pushing up an update to the tool - there will be a improved version soon.

Seems very useful, keep up the good work! Getting the results took a while when looking for 7-10 days, but I guess that's just because of the repeated roundtrips to the ANA tool? Hopefully they won't block it.

Now I just need to collect enough miles to actually make use of the information... :p

Will I have the same issue behind my little Cisco/Linksys firewall at home? I have it configured for NAT and filtering.

Dosen't work well behind strong firewalls because I'm using WebSockets for real-time search. The next update will probably release an update that deals with people behind strong firewalls.. It will work at home.

Great and convenient tool, but not quite accurate for 4 passenger award bookings. OP's tool is showing Available for some SQ flights but CO/ANA tool doesn't reflect the same. I think it's showing availability for 1 pax only instead of 4.

+1. The ability to search across several consecutive days is a nice addition. It really is a shame that the underlying ANA logic for cxns is so feeble. (I was just discussing this in MilesBuzz this morning. Another FTer was looking for award travel LAX-HAN, and ANA only offers LAX-ICN-HAN while ignoring LAX-Tokyo and LAX-SIN options.)

Is there a way the code can be written to perform multiple city searches for the same day and show results for all at the same time? e.g.

Oct 12th (+7 day search)

If I wanted LH and SIN-FRAN shows not available, you can see availability from other cities you select as "from" on the same screen for the same dates.

I really love the concept, and I really look forward to using it as it only improves further. There currently seems to be a lot of flights missing however. . . especially mixed carrier options. For example, in searching 11/25/12 from BKK to ORD, there are plenty of options that should be available, but the *AwardFinder only returns UA flights and says they are full.

My apologies if there is something I've missed that readily explains this. Please keep up the great work to perfect this, as this is the type of search engine I could really use!!

I like the idea of being able to re-run my previous searches. It will save time when I am doing daily checks to see if anything new has opened up.

I am not sure what you meant by others viewing past searches, but I am not so enthused about having a real time running list of searches by other people. However, a top 10 list like the one you posted in post 59 is interesting.

Thanks, much better now.

Regarding my second comment: Would it be possible to integrate the option filter by classes > Business?

My example would be: We have intra-Europe only C class feeders so that when you are looking for F-AWARDS, any AWARD with a feeder won't show up when you apply the F filter (i.e. FRA-ZRH in C available and then ZRH-BKK in F).

This would help a lot.

A different suggestion: When looking for F or C awards a short feeder in economy is acceptable, but not the long flight in economy and the feeder in a higher class.
A filter where you can search for long flights in F or C and feeders in any class would be really helpful.

Edit: Working again. For a while, neither your site nor the ANA site was working.

Once again, thanks OP, this is a great service.

I fear that it might be a victim of its own success -- would ANA perceive this tool (especially because one needs to log in to use the ANA tool) as piracy of its application? Let's hope not!

P.S. Another small change that would improve the user-friendliness would be to place the search form, with the information from the previous search pre-populated, at the bottom of the search results screen, so that the user could initiate a new search, perhaps with small changes to the parameters. As it operates now, the user has to click the back button on the browser, and re-enter all of the parameters since the form comes back blank.

my guess would be that using the ANA site you automatically get a return option 3 or 4 days later. It's most likely that return date (not displayed) that is triggering the error message ;)

Just saw this thread and used the tool today. Very nice!

I especially love the route search. That will be very handy when a user needs to figure out which *A carriers service a route and which cities those carriers use as hubs.

I do have 2 requests pertaining to the route search function:

1 - you have the option to limit by airline, however, not by alliance. Would it be possible to limit by *A so that we only see *A carriers that would be valid to build an award ticket?

2 - is it possible to use full airline names instead of using their call signs? I know a lot of them (at lease in regards to the *A) but not all, and googling to look up many of the small foreign carriers was a bit of a pain, particularly with a lot of non *A carriers coming up on the routes I was looking at.

Great job jyflyer, this will likely become a very popular tool on FlyerTalk!

I realised for those of you using Chrome, there may be some problems resolving the new server. What you need to do is to clear your dns cache by typing this in your addr bar: chrome://net-internals/#dns and then clicking Clear host cache.

Your site is great. I had been trying to put together an itinerary for DFW-SYD December 2012. Once I found your site, it was a breeze -- called US Airways with the flights I had found and they were all available. Now I am ticketed and ready to go!

Sorry for the inconvenience, really. We've been getting over 3000+ searches a day and I've just moved the software to a much better server. This should handle up to 10,000 searches a day no problem :)

I know i'm gonna be in the minority here...but I actually prefer the old (current) version. It was just so simple, quick, and easy to look through results.

For me the BEST feature about the current version is being able to search for any number of days at a time. For example, I could do one easy search to see if there are any F seats on LX86 for all of May. With the current version it is limited to 7 days in advance :(

My feature requests:
- get rid of the 7 day cap on searches
- an option to search only for direct flights
- colour coding for F/J/Y
- option to sort by date

jyflyer
Apr 3, 12, 11:04 pm
I appreciate all comments :) The cap is there currently because we're not sure of the load the server will take :) Once we determine what's a good number, we'll definitely increase the num of days :)

The beta version seems to be giving erroneous results. It is showing availability of award seats where the old version did not. I cross-checked with United's site and the older version is accurate.

My guess is that the passenger count is not being considered. There are two award seats available and I am searching for four. The beta version is showing availability for any number of pax even when only two seats are available.

We are certainly taking into account the number of passengers available. Could you drop me a PM with the details of the error so we can investigate? Our aim is to make this as accurate as possible.

We're now taking information from several different providers (ANA, UA, United) but similar results are certainly de-duplicated.

Still getting the Firewall issue.

That is definitely a problem we're looking into since we're still using the same messaging technology as the old awardfinder. Are you using any anti-virus software such as Avast! or Kaspersky? Or are you on a corporate network?

This is a brilliant tool. Improvements for me would be:

- Increased number of days
- Remembering filter settings if I change the search date
- Ability to specified preferred layovers before searching (they aren't always included as an option in the results)
- Additional cabin class option of "Apply to longest sector" in case a Y or C positioning flight is required at the start/end to get a long F segment.
- The "No. of Layovers" filter sometimes shows the options unsorted (so it lists them as 1, 0, 2)
- I am also having the issue of availability not matching the old version. I searched a date that I know only has 1 seat and it still shows availability for 2 passengers.

Thanks!

Since we're now searching Aeroplan/ANA/United, there may be cases which ANA is not showing all the availability as with the old tool. Could you PM me the exact itinerary/dates you were searching for and we can double check?

Excellent enhancement!

I think the colour coding for F, C and Y cabins would be nice on this version too.

Tried 29 June 12 BNE/SIN on the beta but it comes back with no options. However, using the old tool I see Y available on SQ256.

Suggestion: allow sort and/or filter by cabin class, using the class of the longest leg (for cases when looking to travel in C or F, but OK with a short hop in a lower class).

This is really a great tool, thanks for all your efforts.

I would like to see sorting capability by total itinerary time. And a saver or standard and miles needed sort/filter would be very nice as well.

(But I am happy with it as it is!)

It does currently sort by total itinerary time right now -> Click "Duration" on the sorting panel.

All the flights that we're getting are saver inventory - which is more universal throughout the entire star alliance network.

It wouldn't really work to have any availability other than 'saver'. Each program has different availability for it's members on top of the 'saver' availability that's loaded into starnet.

We released some UI changes today based on comments received. Make sure you press refresh a couple of times!

We now show each flight's class availability on the flight number itself without the need to expand the "show details" panel below. Enjoy.

The new tool is still showing lots of false availability.

Eg. June 25th, YVR-FRA showing F available on LH493. There are no F seats currently available on that flight, and the old tool shows this correctly.

I'm getting this false availability on many of my searches.

jyflyer
Apr 11, 12, 4:15 pm
Do take note that we're no longer pulling from ANA alone. There is availability for the flight (as shown from United). We now have a whole bunch of self-tests that goes thru and verifies flight data that we're pulling individually with each provider - so we're pretty sure of our results.

Why did you get rid of the ability to query a search x days in advance, this was the great beauty over the ANA tool.

Also, on a route like GLA-CPH with the Star Alliance option selected it is giving me options with EI via DUB? This never came up before.

Is there some way to use the old version please?

You can now do +7 day searches on the new UI. The old tool is still there but we do eventually hope to migrate everything to the new tool.

EI is showing up because we're searching UA too, for award flights and EI is their partner. The next release will allow you to filter award flights by provider.

You you used to be able to search past the 330 days restriction used by ANA, but this is no longer possible? That's unfortunate as at least Aeroplan allows searches for up to 355 days I believe?

Anyway, thanks for a great tool ^
