Looks like I'll be flying on LX's J class from YUL to TLV via ZRH in a few weeks, does anyone have any experiance or knowledge of what kind of meal to expect?
It's been years since i've flown in intl J, what sort of meal will i get? Will it be a proper J meal, but kosher? Or will it be an eco class ksml?

I will be on that route IY"H on Feb. 12, and I will report back to you what they serve.

Btw, anybody has any idea what the KSML will be like in "first" from DEL-ZRH?

Out of ZRH, you should get a KSML catered by Schalom (Zurich's kosher resto/caterer). It's been a few years since I last flew but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Nice main (beef in red wine sauce) though dessert could have been better (bog-standard apple cake with parve creme). I don't know whom they use out of TLV.

BTW, LX check-in counter at TLV is downstairs, one floor below main departure floor is.

One thing that annoys me when I fly long-haul is, first you get meaty meal. Then you schlof several hours and they bring you b'fast, which can be sometimes milky. I've had that issue several time in the past. Rather inconvenient if you keep 6hours, less so if you keep only 3hours btwn meat/milky.

Interesting info.
Actually, LX is now up stairs in the "B" section (IIRC)
I was there in december but i flew Y (VFR trip)
LH, OS, LO and ??? Are still downstairs though.

Ha! I flew YUL-LAX-YUL last week and the exact thing happened!
I wait 5 hours + 1 minute, but on a 5hr45min flight even that isnt short enough lol

Wrong!

Schalom is no longer a restaurant. The catering is a private entity and food has much improved. Haven't tasted the food in J or F, but even in Y it is very tasty (my opinion).
On a side note, I know the mashgiach personally, who confirmed the foods age; maximum one day old!!!

Oh and by the way, check in for Swiss at TLV is upstairs in section B.

Yes I noticed that about the food when i flee the route in december, it tasted very good and fresh, nice portion size as well.
Certainly better some sh*t i've gotten out of NYC for god sakes!!

Yes to kosher wine in c ( small bottle of barkan iirc). No to food in lounge (apart from fruit and chocolate).

dont remember if there was any wine, as for the lounge, when I flew LX back after Succos I overnighted it in ZRH the next day the JFK flight was delayed due to MX by a few hrs. Unfortunatley the Term was divided into 2 sections and you werent able to go from 1 section to the other unless you went out of Security.

The lounge was in the other section from the JFK gate and what a hassle! so if the term is still divided when you go thru dont waste your time with the Lounge. btw all I saw was small bite size pieces of chocolate at the front desk and the Dan lounge is alot better, imo

The terminal is no longer divided. Lounge is ok, nothing special. There are israeli newspapers which is nice.

I will be in the terminal twice: once coming in from TLV-ZRH (LX) and connecting to ZRH-EWR (UA) and the other time coming in from BRU-ZRH (LX) connecting to ZRH-TLV (LX). Which lounge makes the most sense/which one has Israeli newspapers?

Regarding wine in C, is it red, white, or both?

Wine is red (unless you're in First, in which case you get both...).
Closest lounge for both is Panorama lounge in (in E). That is the one with Israeli papers etc and where the flight will be announced. The Swiss lounge in A is arguably a bit nicer but would require you do pass through passport control and security on your outbound (not a major problem at ZRH). On your return no extra checks will be reqired.
If you really want to lounge-hop, you can also go to the arrivals lounge after TLV-ZRH (assuming you're on the morning flight, which I assume you are). There is also another Swiss lounge in D/B (former LH lounge) but it's out of your way, can't see a reason to go there.

Really wanted F, but no F on the ZRH-TLV route. Do they have kosher wine also on non-TLV routes?

I've been to the Panorama Lounge. Not terrible - free WiFi (but only for an hour). How would I get to the A lounge coming in from TLV, and then departing to EWR on UA? I would need to do passport control to do so? I anyways need to re-clear security. Do I need to clear security multiple times to do so?

just booked a EWR-ZRH-TLV-ZRH-EWR trip myself with all of 2 hrs between the flights I wouldnt go anywhere but that Panorama lounge which was the lounge I was referring to in my above post

The last time I drank wine on my flight was with TWA, when they stocked bottles (reg size) of Yarden up front (Merlots, Cabs not the cheap stuff Mt Hermon kind) the FAs were very kind and allowed me to open the bottle and pour what I wanted knowing that if they opened it I couldnt have any.

But the small bottles that CO has or at times some other carriers are not the kind of wine I would purchase so no big deal if they dont have any. Cant remember the last time I purchased any bottle in Israel that was under 100 sheks except for Yiron, which is a steal at 89-99 a bottle should be closer to 150+

Are you doing LX-UA-UA-LX? My current itin is LX-UA, but I'm looking to switch to LX's 738 all-biz service to EWR, in which case I would have a 7 hour layover. (When are you flying - maybe we'll be on the same flight! ;))

I've had wine on LY and CO BF. Do they have it available in Y as well?

The last time, they had a very good Barkan Shiraz. In general, not the type of wines I'd buy, but not bad wine. I also enjoy 100-150+ wine, but my guy sells it to me at significant savings (the wine shop in the Cardo in the Old City).

Looking now - from Swiss I have a Red Barkan Classic Cab Sav and White Alfasi Chardonnay from Chile (I think the latter was from F).

I also have a rather nice full bottle of Recanati Special Reserve 2004 from Lufthansa - but I think that was due to being HON.

The arrivals lounge is in the baggage reclaim hall - no need to go there unless you have time and want a shower, or are planning to leave the airport.
To get to lounge in A (if you want), follow signs for flight connections to gates A.

that Barkan is what most airlines that serve wine will give you , to me its no different then Yardens Mt Hermon except maybe the Yarden isnt mivushul, I believe Barkan is but may be wrong.

now if they served say something from Castel,a Shiloh Reserve ( Mosaic is very good) even Yiron Id be :D But besides TWA I dont remember getting any Reserves or better wines while in the air, havent flown LY in F or C so I cant comment on what they serve

My ZRH flights are in May for Shavouth, they couldnt book me F on UA and C on LX so I took Y for now and will hopefully get C (award tkt only way to fly to TLV)

On CO when I have asked for wine when in Y they dont have any but I already gave the FA my coupon and usually had my Plat card out, they ended up getting me a bottle from BF and returned the coupon as well

Didnt know there was a wine place in the Cardo, but it wouldnt pay for me anyway , no place to park the car. I usually go to AAPulp on Kevesh Ramot off Bar Ilan. Or a place or 2 on Agripas. Besides that Yiron or Meron for apx 90 sheks, I usually pay over 200 a bottle, but always pick up 1 or 2 bet 150-200 to try and find something decent The Reserves from Shiloh are apx 150 and worth it!

btw in the near furure LXs 738 (its not really LX but PrivtAir) is going bye bye and LX will be flying it on its A330s 3 class. Do yourselfa favor and do a Search on that 738 flight if I remember correctly most people said to stay as far away from it as you can, and Id think UAs flatbed C would be alot better

Just came back from tlv. Flew swiss tlv-zrh-jfk. Was a sleep for 1st leg so didnt have meal. But second leg my meal had a bottle of red wine and my wifes a bottle of white. We were in business.
I think the red was Barakan and the white I think was herzog. they were encloseed in the meal loaded from the local swiss kosher supplier. As such they were both ice cold.

Don't know the Alfasi specifically, but I've been pleasantly surprised with a bunch of Chilean whites. I'd LOVE to see a Castel, but good luck with that! (My Seder wine has been the Castel 2006 (09) 2007 (10) 2008 (11) and will be doing the 2009 this year.

There's a place, Mifgash Rami, by Tzomet Bar Ilan. He has the largest selection in the area (by the shopping area there) and has some of the best prices. For example, got a Bartenura Moscato D'Asti for 35 shekel.

dont know if its the same place, my place is sort of on a corner its where the sort of service road ends heading towards Bar Ilan. you go in turn right and walk down some stairs as they redid the place apx a yr ago. There are a few palces by mine if you driving on that service rd and dont turn you will literally drive right into the palce

No. Moscato is the blue; Malvasia is the red. They taste NOTHING like 7UP. They're not true wines, but they are "fun" wines. Also great when you need to buy for people who don't like wine. They're generally about $10 in USA, but over 50 shek here. 35 is a fantastic price for them. Saw a 2009 Castel Grand Vin for 185 shek!

OK the kevesh to Ramot , when heading to Ramot from rehov Bar Ilan , on the left side once you pass the intersection there are a row of stores (shacks) then there are a few apt houses that are slightly set back and theres a sort of service road between those buildings and kevesh Ramot (theres an Angels store there as well). that service rd doesnt run up to Bar Ilan but ends and goes into kevesh Ramot. Just as it turns to join kR theres a store usually with cases of soda and water piled up outisde, theres an alley way and some stairs just before it on its side to the right

if you drive by eve Shabbat its the place with people waiting to get into

you said yours is on BI itself which side of the street and if heading towards Ramot Eskol is it before or after kR?

Flew TLV-ZRH-JFK last week in Business and was quite happy with the selection.

Slept in from TLV-ZRH but had a nice meal on real cutlery (with Barkan wine) on the ZRH-JFK. Seemed quite fresh as well. Only complaint was the appetizer which consisted of gefilte fish and herring (seriously??)

Before landing was served a "snack" which consisted of a cold Turkey/Salami sandwich on a seemingly fresh roll.

If you're coming from the direction of the Old City, and you're on Shmuel Hanavi, turn left on Bar Ilan, and right there on the right should be a bunch of wine shops. They all have decent prices, though Mifgash Rami is the largest, and Rami is a great guy.

I've just arrived back this afternoon from ZRH after a 4 day trip. The LX kosher service and offerings were very good. I would recomend them.
