30 years after Air Florida crash, skies safer than ever
by Ashley Halsey III, The Washington Post

There are at least three reasons that in 2012 your plane shouldn’t be covered in ice: better chemicals to keep the ice off; stricter regulations and better training for both ground and cockpit crews.

Yes, very sad. I don't really remember where I flying on Air Florida since I was little. I never flew on it before.

Possibly apocryphal, but I recall that a young Howard Stern caused one of his many controversies minutes after the Air Florida crash, by calling up Air Florida reservations and asking them over the air how much more it would cost to get a flight to the Key Bridge.

When Air Florida said we don't fly there, he said "Well you did yesterday." I had some say this stunt got him thrown out of DC, but others have said he was already fixin to be gone.

I remember an interview with a male survivor and he was asked what was going thru your mind and he said "One airplane ride too many."

A few years later, we used the CVR transcript to recreate the minutes before takeoff in a PanAm 737 simulator so it also included airplane sounds. This was used for training to illustrate the communications breakdown on the flight deck.

A good friend was in the Air Force with Roger Pettit, the first officer who was highly regarded. A sad day, and thanks for posting the article.
