Booking CS 14 for Feb 4 brings up a Service Alert:

Train 14 Operates Nonstop Los Angeles - Oakland: February 1 - 8, 2012
From February 1 through February 8, Train 14 will travel on an alternate route from Los Angeles to Oakland and will not stop at any intermediate stations. Passengers may contact Amtrak for other trains or Thruway motorcoaches serving stations between Los Angeles to Oakland.

Anyone have any updated info? Is this still on schedule?

As far as I know, it is.

The Union Pacific is performing trackwork on the usual Coast Starlight route during the time northbound #14 passes. #14 is being detoured between LA and Oakland via the San Joaquin valley

For rail enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to experience some "rare" mileage, with the train running over the Tehachapi mountains (including the loop). Even the trip up the valley will be on the Union Pacific, not the BNSF line used by the regular San Joaquin trains. For those not enthralled with rail hobby stuff, it is a somewhat less scenic ride than heading up the coast.

I disagree -- it's even more scenic and spectacular -- where else can you ride a train line that goes under and over it self at the 'loop'

That's more perceptible when you're viewing the train, vs. on the train.

Not if you were expecting a ride along the Pacific coast. But for those who have done the coast route, this inland detour is a nice change.

First stop Oakland, when on this divert.
Anyone know if it arrives into Oakland way ahead of time on this route, or is it causing delays?

Taking this train next week.
