From the hotel's website:
Fairmont Grand Hotel Kyiv is accepting reservations for arrival from March 1, 2012.
We are going to Kiev, Ukraine in April. We have a room booked with Hyatt Regency Kiev on points. But since Fairmont will be opening a new hotel there, and we will have to find a hotel to use up our Platinum complimentary night certs, I'm thinking of booking this hotel.
I wonder how soon we can book using the certs of the new membership year.
I have never been to Kiev. Whoever knows this city please explain the difference between the locations of the Fairmont and the Hyatt. TIA.

Hyatt is much more central. Fairmont is in the lower part of town that has nothing going for it except river views.

Thank you!
I still can't book the Fairmont with next year's free night certs. I might just stay the first night at Hyatt and the second night at Fairmont. We'll have an early morning flight so it doesn't matter if we don't have breakfast on our day of departure.

Today, I just called FPC.
They allowed me to book a room using next year's cert, after verifying my status in March. So we will stay at the Hyatt in a suite for the first night, and switch to the Fairmont for the second night. The suite upgrade only gave us a Junior Suite. But it's still good because the whole stay will be free.^
Maybe I'll post some pictures of the Junior Suite at the Fairmont here after our stay.

The five-star Fairmont Grand Hotel Kyiv, with 258 rooms and located on the Dnipro River bank at 1A, Naberezhno-Khreschatytska Street in Kyiv, will be officially opened on March 27, 2012, reads a posting on the Web site of the Fairmont chain.
The report says that the hotel in Kyiv, which is the first hotel of the chain in Eastern Europe, accepts applications for accommodation from March 14, 2012.
The 12-storey building has 54 suits, including presidential and royal apartments. The hotel has restaurants, bars, a SPA center with a fitness center, conference halls, a ballroom and atrium.
The project was realized by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and Kyiv-based Yaroslaviv Val LLC.

Interesting I didn't even know about that Fairmont. It's not a bad location, and right next to a metro stop (one stop from the main square). It's down a large hill from the main part of town though, so you won't want to walk there unless the weather is really nice. Nice walk through the lower town though, and up the funiculaire or St. Andrew's descent. It's still very central, just a 2 minute metro ride to the main square in town, and there are river cruises that leave right from in front of the hotel. (There's a McDonald's there as well).
The only downside I will say is that small area tends to be very crowded and dirty (trash) in the summer.

I'm super excited about this Fairmont addition. My wife's background is Hungarian/Ukrainian, and we've been talking over the years how we would love to visit the Ukraine.
Too bad we can't time the trip to take advantage of their outstanding introductory rates.

I just remembered Ukraine & Poland are host countries for the Euro 2012 football (soccer) tournament and so the timing for the opening makes sense as it'll probably get lots of high end guests during that June event.

I was in Kiev in April and had a booking there. But we didn't end up staying there because my wife, after browsing on the Fairmont website, didn't like the style of the hotel. So we decided to stay both nights at the Hyatt instead of one night at each. We took a quick trip to the hotel while we were in Kiev. We didn't regret because it wasn't completely finished. There was no functioning restaurant etc and the sidewalk at the front of the hotel wasn't completed.
I'm sure it is done by now because of the Euro cup.
The location is not really a downtown area and it is opposite a McD and a subway station. It is very close to a funicular station which takes you to the Mykhailivska Square and the St. Michael's Cathedral.
Maybe someone else here could give a more detailed review.
