I am considering purchasing the Flickr Pro account for 25 bucks a year where I can save all my Pictures and clips... Just as an FYI I also have it on a hard drive but have very very bad luck with drives crashing in the past.

The Pro account gives me:

Unlimited uploads and storage
Unlimited sets and collections
Access to your original files
Stats on your account
Ad-free browsing and sharing
HD playback for high-definition video uploads

Plus the Iphone feature is cool essentially extending your library of photos.

None the less any opinions on anything else better out there would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

while it is not quite the same price, Id check out smugmug.com... The best thing about smugmug is unlimited space and you can upload/download full size images. Im always uploading 12mb images

I'm In, have had a Pro account for 3-4 years, I use it as storage and to access images away from home. I am also a member of a couple of pools for specific areas and cameras

I'm a Flickr Pro member since 2007. Love it. There are probably better places for storing and displaying your photos, but the community of Flickr is pretty much unbeatable. Pro is great value.

Cheers,
T.

One of the other things to consider is if you want friends/family/public comments on your photos? I think you can only leave a comment on Flickr if you are registered but some of the alternative hosting services (I forget which one now) allows comments from the public.

Other than that it's a great site and well worth the extra money.

My wife uses Smugmug and loves it. I wrote a bridge to tie with her site so when she updates on smugmug so does her site.
Its a pretty cool platform.
Flickr is also nice too, I think it comes down to preference.

Another Flickr Pro fan here.

I find they are easy to upload and organize, and I like having access to all my best / favorite photos no matter where I am. You can set things to as public or private as you want, which is important, too.

I also recommend browsing around Flickr for a great way to spend an afternoon. There are some amazing photographers out there.

Actually, that reminds me, I need to go renew my account.

I think it's well worth it. I like it as a photo back-up site as well as a place to share pictures. And, since this is a site about flying, I'll admit that I prepaid a few years. . . as a small part towards spending a few thousand dollars to earn miles for a credit card promotion! :)

Just to clarify.. when people say it's a backup.

Can i upload
1. Output JPEG that's 11 mbs?
2. original Canon RAW files that are 20 mbs?
3. Both

Can I organize them into folder/subfolder?
Can i share individual folder/subfolder?

Thanks!!

I highly recommend Flickr Pro. There's no limit photo uploads (though there is for videos) and I use it to store my photo collection. You can also choose to give access to friends, family etc and also ensure the photos are not accessible by the general public.

From the Flickr site FAQ:

With a free account, you can upload photos up to 15MB in size, or 2 videos per month- up to 150MB for each video. If you have a Pro account, you can upload photos up to 20MB and videos up to 500MB in size.

Flickr officially supports JPEGs, non-animated GIFs, and PNGs. You can also upload TIFFs and some other file types, but they will automatically be converted to and stored in JPEG format.

One more question:

Are the photos on Flickr copyright protected?
i.e. once you upload to Facebook, that photo belongs to Facebook..

how about Flickr?

According to Flickr, in the U.S., Canada, EU countries, and Japan, you are automatically granted copyrights to your photos.

There have been other answers already, but a few clarifications:

1. Flickr does not accept RAW files at all. Large JPEG's are OK.
2. Flickr does not have a folder concept as such, but instead has a system called sets and collections. The Flickr hierarchy is more about displaying and sharing photos than archiving them.
3. As far as copyrights go, you always retain them. Flickr also enables distribution using the various Creative Commons licenses (even if you go CC, the copyright always remains with you).

Cheers,
T.

So i did some research on Flickr Pro..and there's a 'delete pro account without notification' issue on there.

any comments on that? is that a realistic risk? or really just for those pushing some agenda?

In my experience, that is an extremely rare issue. I've had that happen to one contact (out of a total of maybe 600). That person did protest his innocence, but the circumstances were murky at best.

The cancellations I've heard of have happened because of alleged copyright issues or online conduct.

I would not be surprised to find similar things happening on e.g. Smugmug (I haven't done the research, though). While it appears Flickr has handled some of the cases in a heavy-handed manner, they are very, very rare.

I would not worry about this (actually, being a Flickr member, I do not).

Cheers,
T.
