First off, thanks to all of you that volunteer to help with this years seminar. It is an all volunteer event and any excess proceeds are donated to charity at the end of the accounting.
Here is where we need help:
•Set Up. We’ll start setting up sponsor tables and building the easels for the display boards around 3PM on Friday afternoon. Contact Rick on FT by PM to Frugal Travel Guy if you can assist there.
•Registration: We need four individuals on Friday from say 6 to 10PM to help Howie with registration and four more on Saturday morning from 7 to 8:30 AM. Contact Howie by email.
•We need Michigan Apples — WE'VE Got our Apples.
•Balima and legalalien have volunteered to be our local Chicago contacts and help with the purchase of local materials and getting the logos on to the display boards. Howie will be in contact as he has the logos. Would each of you touch base with the ThePointsGuy to see if he needs any help with the Saturday night cocktail event? PM on FT should work.
•Skiadcock is running the charity raffle again and she needs volunteers. You may contact her by PM on FlyerTalk at skiadcock to offer assistance with this very important job. Thanks.
•DLouise37 is again handling the projectors and set up of the PowerPoint presentations. I believe we have an assistant for him this year but if you can lend a hand there, I know he would appreciate the backup. Dlouise37 by FT PM for that one.
•Speakers Please get your PowerPoint presentations to Howie before the event begins.
•Sponsors: Make sure Howie has your logo if he doesn’t already!
•Attention All Bloggers: One of the seminars is Ask the Bloggers and you are all welcome. I’ll need your name, blog name, and email address asap if you will be in attendance and want face time with your readers. I’m sure some of the questions will be quite interesting. As I don’t know how many will be there the format is still up in the air at this time. Get to me as soon as possible so I can get a head count. rick@frugaltravelguy.com will work for that one.
To all those attending and volunteering, thank you for making your event another success. Lots to learn, people to meet and fun to be had. If I missed anything send me a PM on FT at Frugal Travel Guy

Does this mean that if I don't book through this link, my reservation will be cancelled? Or that I can't attend the seminar?
I cannot book a nonrefundable room at this point because my husband's work schedule is uncertain until March, but I want to stay at the hotel since I'm 95% certain he can get that weekend off. I want to understand exactly what is at risk if I book directly with the hotel.
Thanks, Anita

Pretty much my wife and my situation. I play the game and she goes along. It really makes things easier for both of us since we don't get in each other's way.
I'm coming to the event alone since she has no interest in how it's played and the ORD area isn't very interesting. Maybe the next event could be in Vegas so the non-interested spouses would have something to do.

We have a similar situation but now Mr. Silver Springer has a card in his wallet that tells him which card to use for various purchases (gas, groceries, dining).
He also now reads some of the blogs which is new this year. After two DOs he has outgrown the rookie bootcamp. Your husband will learn a lot.

This is amazing. It is mid January and the hotel is sold out. I was really hoping to catch it early this year to avoid booking elsewhere. Thanks for the question. It will not be the Internet Brands Seminar. Our hobby is bigger than both of the forums and I made this point clear to Randy at Milepoint and the folks at Internet Brands I want this to be an all inclusive volunteer event for all in our hobby. Both have agreed.
In fact, I've asked Randy again to close the show and am awaiting his response AND we need both these forums to help sponsor the event. The food cost went up and the points guy and I want to keep the registration as close to the same as last year as possible.
The name of the Event is Chicago Seminars 2012 and all are welcome.

Same procedure as last year in that those of us in the Host hotel will be in line for event tickets when sales start, ie, if I don't beat the crowd or am out of FT touch for a week or so, I'll still be able to buy a ticket based on my Host hotel reservation.

The host hotels appears to have some issues regarding information retention. Last year, despite having my reservation in my PC account online, I never recieved the points for the stay. I called the hotel and they stated that I never gave them my PC card number. Eventually, I got the points, but the answer to me made no sense whatsoever.

During registration, it asks about preferred airlines, hotels, and alliances. These fields are required. What is this information used for? Am I more likely to get a perk from an airline/hotel at the conference if I select them as my preferred, or maybe I should just leave it set to None and maybe they’ll compete for my business? ;)

There are definitely some. There is a large bar /restaurant at the hotel which is quite busy after the events. No disco disco ... but its a good time. ^I'll be a bit more honest with bfxfd, truth be told, the only 21-25 people that go to that bar (other than if there is an event/convention at the hotel) are people that work at the bar/restaurant. The bar/restaurant and the whole area near the hotel is NOT a 21-25 person destination, nor anyone's age destination for fun as it is a suburban warehouse/factory area. I know, I've lived/worked nearby to this area for nearly 20 years.
bfxfd, if you are looking for a vibrant scene, go downtown, period. (my suggestion would be to either come in before or stay after the seminar and enjoy Chicago as you'll be quite tired/exhausted if you partake downtown then try to commute in the morning to the seminar, plus the commute alone will take a lot of time out of your day).
The above said, at the seminar you will have a great time learning & talking points/miles and other travel related items with the seminar attendees. Just manage your expectations on any vibrant scene.:D

As was mentioned above, Capt. Denny's attention to customer service is unmatched in the airline industry that I am aware of. Went to his seminar last year and it was great. Took a couple of his flights and went to the PDX DO in January with him. Incredible. You won't be disappointed.

Yeah, that's normal for parallel sessions. Sometimes one choice clearly fits your needs or temperament better; other times it is painful to pick one.
Also, is there a vibrant nightlife after the days events?
One possibility is to start complaining about meals, especially lack of fruits: that can get vibrant. :) Otherwise it is just how Sweet Willie said above.

What early 30's is too old for having a good time? The hotel bar, Shelby Campbells is the top spot after the seminars. The have excellent drink specials. Friday night is my favorite with a bucket of 5 Corona's for $12 or $5 Patron Shots. Saturday is $3 U CALL IT's (Domestic Drafts & Bottles, Well Drinks & House Wine).
If sitting in the restaurant/Bar is too loud, you can take your bar drinks to the lobby for a quieter environment to discuss miles and more.
For those who wish to mix their own drinks, there is a liquor store about a 10 min walk away from the hotel.

Nothing wrong with an older crowd, in fact, based on several threads in the DL forum the older crowd may very well put me to shame. I am very excited to meet some fellow FTers. I'm on the verge of registering and had a few questions:
1) I assume it is still worthwhile to go even if I can't attend the Friday night sessions, true or false?
2) How much knowledge is necessary to get the most out of the "advanced" sessions? I have been a regular reader on FT for a couple of years, so in the areas of my interest, I believe that I have more than "beginner" knowledge but am not an expert. I don't want to attend sessions that are way over my head, but OTOH, I don't want to attend sessions that are too basic or about topics that are less relevant for me.
3) Are the hotel and airline "breakout" sessions structured so that:
a) there is a general session applicable to all programs followed by a breakout where participants choose a single program (or alliance) for the remainder of the time
b) There is a general session followed by the opportunity to select more than one (non-concurrent) breakout sessions
c) There are breakout sessions (program/alliance specific) only?
4) Are there any hotels within easy walking distance of the host hotel, since it is fully booked, and past participants have indicated issues with the shuttle service from the overflow hotel?
Thanks!

1. I think most people will tell you it is still worth it.
2. I'm just guessing but two years on FT should get you into the advanced sessions. I personally would pick by topic as you can mix and match knowledge levels.
3. We learned alot at last years breakout sessions. First everybody liked them. We had too many groups in one room so we split it up this year with Hotels at one time and airlies at another. Also there will be short presentations by qualified people to start the sessions. Geoffco has top tier on three airlines. He'll talk til somebody kicks him off the stage and we have moderators for each of the major domestic airlines. Toomanybooks may do a moderated session on Southwest. In the hotel moderated breakout, we have one expert each of four talking for ten minutes max about their program then leading a discussion group.
4. I can't answer. Somebody want to step in here.

There really aren't any hotels nearby that are walking distance to the Holiday Inn. I stayed at a Marriott property last year near the airport, but I rented a car.
There is a Sheraton north of the hotel, but you need a car, but some stayed there and took taxis. It appeared to me that the shuttle to the backup Holiday Inn seemed to work. I believe they had a school bus to accommodate the volume of people.
If you are not at the host hotel or backup hotel - you likely need to get a car. Cars are expensive in Chicago unless you have a corporate contract. But there are hotels cheaper than the host hotel (a Marriott Courtyard 5 miles down for example).

Perhaps try www.autoslash.com where they'll check the rates for you up until your date of rental.
There are 3 hotels in Elk Grove which are close to the host hotel but not really within walking distance (Ramada, Howard Johnson, Days Inn), the Ramada & HoJo are plausible at best but the Days Inn steer well clear of!!!

Thanks Frugal Travel Guy, Cova, and Sweet Willie for your quick and informative responses!
I don't think I want to rent a car, take taxis, or stay at a Ramada, Howard Johnson, or Days Inn (I was hoping for a SPG or Hilton property next door to the host hotel ;)), so I will be fine with the shuttle from the overflow hotel.
I appreciate that the seminar is during the time that USAirways historically does the Grand Slam, making a stay at a hotel chain where I don't have status or collect points worthwhile.

You could get 2, perhaps 3 car rental hits depending upon your travel that weekend.

According to the Eventbrite registration page (http://chicagoseminars2012.eventbrite.com/), less than 275 tickets remain available ... meaning over half the allotted 550 tickets are gone ... in less than 9 days. I believe it took over 90 days last year to reach that same 275 sales level.
Congrats to Frugal Travel Guy on putting together yet another great program. Looking forward to attending #3!

When we are done we will have over 50 volunteers involved in putting this event on.. It is a labor of love and "grass roots" program designed for those of all experience and financial circumstances.
Come meet your travel buddies and learn a trick or two.

just a thought, car rentals are usually a "cheap" way to get hits for rentals reserved on weekends. You could get 2, perhaps 3 car rental hits depending upon your travel that weekend.
Yes, if the US AIR GS is going on I will be doing this along with hotel hops.

I'll be a bit more honest with bfxfd, truth be told, the only 21-25 people that go to that bar (other than if there is an event/convention at the hotel) are people that work at the bar/restaurant. The bar/restaurant and the whole area near the hotel is NOT a 21-25 person destination, nor anyone's age destination for fun as it is a suburban warehouse/factory area. I know, I've lived/worked nearby to this area for nearly 20 years.
SweetWillie, that might be true any other time but during the Seminar Do the hotel bar is basically packed w/ FTers drinking (lots) & of course talking miles/points.
Cheers.

As the Chief Charity Raffle Cheerleader, er, Chair, I'm putting a call out for two things:
1) Volunteers to help me sell raffle tickets. Please note that you will not miss any seminar sessions by volunteering. Charity raffle sales occur in the lobby, eating areas, bar, during registration, meals, breakout sessions, after seminar events are done for the day & everyone is in the bar drinking. (Please further note when they're drinking is a great time to ask :D).
2) If anyone has any items to donate for the charity raffle, please PM me with what you'd like to donate (and of course don't forget to bring it with you that weekend).
Cheers.

Your post that I responded to was:
"I'll be a bit more honest with bfxfd, truth be told, the only 21-25 people that go to that bar (other than if there is an event/convention at the hotel) are people that work at the bar/restaurant. bfxfd, if you are looking for a vibrant scene, go downtown, period. (my suggestion would be to either come in before or stay after the seminar and enjoy Chicago as you'll be quite tired/exhausted if you partake downtown then try to commute in the morning to the seminar, plus the commute alone will take a lot of time out of your day)."
I interpreted that to mean you were telling bfxhd that there wouldn't be people in the bar in the age group he asked about & to also consider going downtown, when indeed there will be folk at the bar & closing it down. If I interpreted it wrong, my bad.
On a dif note - we do have 21-25 yr olds that attend the seminar, so I don't think there's any worry. And there are travel nuts of all ages :D :D
Cheers.

OK how about this we are down to just 252 tickets to go.
How about a guess for a date they are gone. I will buy a beer in the bar for the one who guess the closest to the right date that is if you guess April 1st and it goes to April 2nd you are out and the one who guessed say April 3rd would win!
Bring it on - when they be SOLD OUT?;)

Great offer (thanks), but...
If multiple people guess the correct date, how will you determine the winner? Earliest post?
Also, don't you want to cut off guesses once the number of Tickets Remaining drops below some arbitrary number (e.g.,150)?

Oh more rules good idea. OK yes to both. You only get to pick one day. If someone had your day then who ever picked that day first gets that day!
Cut off number will be 50! Must guess before then so may be good to wait to guess! Like this. If close between two I will buy 2 beers, maybe 3. Just not get silly about it! Have fun.;)

If you don't want to pay for the overflow hotel, which is far away and expensive, the Howard Johnson and the Days Inn are within a few minutes walking distance, and the Days Inn has an airport shuttle. Combine that with Expedia vouchers and you can stay almost for free.

I stay at my fair share of divey hotels when Wyndham runs a great promo (which sadly they haven't had a good one in awhile), but I still maintain to steer clear of the Days Inn Elk Grove.
Obviously YMMV (for those that don't know what YMMV or other terms mean, check out the Flyertalk Glossary: http://www.flyertalk.com/glossary/ )

Sheraton suites is next to the overflow HI (the one with the Harry Carey restaurant). I would assume someone staying there could take the shuttle over to the host hotel. The rooms are pretty nice and all are suites with a separate living room with sofa bed and 2 flat screen TVs.

While no guarantees, there is a very good chance you'd see a lower LAX-ORD fare between now and October.
