RT on UA from IAH-ORD that weekend is just over $200 right now for Fri - Sunday. Lowest I have seen in a while. Not sure if any other routes are discounted right now or not, but I just booked my flight today! See you all in October!

Just saw your post and decided to check it out. Wife and I are coming from IAD, I'll be the one attending while she enjoys the city. Looking forward to this, as it'll be my first DO.

*edit* I should also mention I got them for $256 each AI RT, which isn't great for a MR, but figured it was a good enough deal for me right now.

Just registered for this year. Wanted to wait until I felt sufficiently recovered from my Stage 4 Cancer to attend the seminars. ^

I may be difficult to understand (verbally) due to having neck & tongue surgery back this past December. I have not been able to swallow since my surgery on December 22, 2011. No worries, I am glad to be among friends! ^

I have taken 3 different trips by plane and the TSA have not hassled me over my liquid foods/prescriptions. I went back to work full time on May 14. ^:)

A big THANK YOU to all the people that were very kind & compassionate toward me at Chicago Seminars 2011 when I was in alot of pain. I very much enjoyed attending the last 2 years & very much look forward to attending again this year.

Sorry for the late registration but I am GLAD I will be attending! Will look forward to my 3rd year!

FYI in case you are on these flights:

I re-confirmed our travel plans and our flight from LAX to ORD on 10/10/12 is no longer listed on the website. I assume the flight is cancelled; however, no one has contacted me.

In addition, our return flight departure to LAX from ORD on 10/14/12 has changed by one hour, again, no one informed me and I found out just by double checking our reservations.

It is a huge bar and tends to be the center of activity between seminars and in the evenings. The food at the hotel is actually really good as well. There are some of us that arrive early to help set up. If Sweet Willie and you get back after Hot Doug's (please bring me the dog with foie gras), come join us!

Looking forward to $5 patron shots friday night (http://www.shelbycampbells.com/specials.php) at Shelby Campbell's:) $3 drafts will come in handy for Saturday

Does any female with a double bed room interested in sharing their Elk Grove Holiday Inn room? I know, it sounds scary to offer to share your room with someone you haven't met. If you PM me I'd be happy to tell you more about myself. I am a professional in a position that requires an advanced degree... I'm just frugal and not that excited about being shuttled back and forth and it would save both of us some money.

I'm registered for the seminar but I need to get the flight and hotel taken care of.

I'm definitely still a nebbie but I've been trying the points game for about 9 months now.

None of the seminars I was interested in attending are available any longer, so not much point in making the trip. Releasing my ticket so now it's 7 available.

Edit: unless N/A means there is space in a given session?

Edit again: some slots do not allow the choice of either session. Is that even possible?

There are no transfers and no refunds, not even for reasons that, frankly, any conference with any humanity would permit.

Note that Eventbrite permits refunds and transfers if the conference organizers do, so this falls squarely on the organizers.

Policy's pretty much been the same since year 1 if I recall. Given this is a volunteer-organized event, they can pretty much set the rules whichever way they want. And they've always been up front about it - not like they surprised anyone at the last minute.

Cheers.

Note that Eventbrite permits refunds and transfers if the conference organizers do, so this falls squarely on the organizers.yes it does.

I'm not defending the organizers but pointing out that Flyertalk has a certain small % of folks (pieces of crap in my opinion) who would buy a ticket to this event, sign up for events, with the sole purpose of reselling the ticket for a profit/miles/points.

Perhaps if language re: switching of tickets was installed, such as
1) one transfer per FTer, not annual, but only a one time ever (so someone couldn't transfer on a yearly basis, they get one out and that's it)
2) transfer must be for face value, no increase
3) person taking on ticket must attend the same classes that the original person signed up for

etc etc.

I think the problem is that refunds/changes etc will require too much hands-on management from the organizers (2 guys, so the plural barely sneaks in!) who are already very busy. They can't avoid dealing with the hotel, catering, speakers, 500 attendees, etc., so avoiding extra work is understandable. Of course, we all think our case is unique and constitutes a very small request, but you can imagine if changes were permitted there will be dozens upon dozens of requests.

The new, just announced, Priority Club Points Break includes the Crowne Plaza in Northbrook, IL, which is about a 10 minute drive from the Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village conference site. I just booked this Crowne Plaza for 5000 points per night for the two nights. Seeing as you can buy points (if you don't already have them) for .7¢ (seven tenths of a cent) that works out to $35 per night for a $100 per night room.

It might be nice if someone were unable to come, they could give back their ticket (no refund of fee) and the organizers could sell again = more money for charity.

Exactly how I'd do it, and I think Eventbrite already has support for that much.

If it were a direct "no other changes" transfer that's done through Eventbrite's mechanism, and then one said "no transfers within X days of event" (where X is probably 30, 45, or 60), that would be easier for all attendees.

It might be nice if someone were unable to come, they could give back their ticket (no refund of fee) and the organizers could sell again = more money for charity.

This would also be good with the caveats above.

I'm not going, but it does pain me to know that there is one person out there who can't go because I bought my ticket early.

I'm likely not the only person; if there's 5-10% of us, then that's a significant amount of expense for catering that'll go unused, and money raised where there's no value to the time the speakers are putting in for those bodies who aren't there.

This hotel property is approximately three miles from the host hotel.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago Wood Dale-Elk Grove (http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/illinois/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-chicago-wood-dale-elk-grove-CHIWDDT/about/index.html) has a free complimentary shuttle service available to take you to nearby attractions and local businesses, and I intend to take advantage of this service to get to the host hotel.

Haray Caray's Italian Steakhouse has a good selection but is somewhat pricey. Another local favorite is Shoeless Joes Ale House & Grille which is less than 5 minutes walk -- diagonally across the Sheraton which is adjacent to your hotel.

Ask for Kailee as your waitress and tell her your one of those crazy FlyerTalk people like the big group she handled so well back on August 25th.

There are two famous Chicago pizza places nearby: Giordano's and Gino's East. Both are just down the road on Higgins, about 1 - 1.5 miles. Might not qualify as "easy walking distance" in the middle of October, but doable, and the hotel shuttle might be able to take you there.

EDIT: HC and SJ mentioned above are always safe choices, though aside from memorabilia, HC is a good, but generic Italian steakhouse, while SJ is a good, but generic sports bar. And yes, I do like both places.

You would have to check if this is doable via the hotel shuttle. But IMO, Lou Malnati's completely toasts Giordano's and Gino's for deep dish pizza.

It is about 3 or 4 miles NW on Higgins Rd from your hotel.

Let's just say, that's debatable. :)

Though I shall not be judgmental and let the guests of the city pick. Either place is more 'local' than many other choices in the area.

Unfortunately, no shuttles. I'm contemplating staying at the Sheraton Suites for 3,000 points on Saturday. It is closer than Westin according to the map, but then I'm mindful of real travel time and costs that can be an entirely different matter. Anyone local know how much a cab fare would be between those two properties?

Shouldn't be more than $12-$15 (plus extra pax and tolls, if any). Remember that this is a suburban area. You cannot flag a cab down; you or the hotel must call for one.

I use American Taxi (http://www.americantaxi.com/, (847) 253-4411) or 303 Taxi (http://www.303taxi.com/index.aspx, (847) 303-0303), but I imagine both hotels have their preferred companies, too.

The good news is that at both properties there's almost always at least one taxi from these companies waiting for a fare. And if not the hotel can usually get one there within 15 minutes. Going the other way I'm sure both companies will figure out that the host hotel will be a good source of business for evening fares.

+1 to legalalien on the two cab companies.

I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago and these are the two main cab companies for the area.

Both are large and have excellent reputations. I personally use American Taxi, but that is just a personal preference. I am sure there are lots of folks in my area that swear by 303 as well.

First off, thanks to all of you that volunteer to help with this years seminar. It is an all volunteer event and any excess proceeds are donated to charity at the end of the accounting.

Here is where we need help:

•Set Up. We’ll start setting up sponsor tables and building the easels for the display boards around 3PM on Friday afternoon. Contact Rick on FT by PM to Frugal Travel Guy if you can assist there.

•Registration: We need four individuals on Friday from say 6 to 10PM to help Howie with registration and four more on Saturday morning from 7 to 8:30 AM. Contact Howie by email.

•We need Michigan Apples — “to and fro” brought a terrific selection of Wisconsin apples last year and its time for some Michigan ones this year. If you are driving from Michigan for the seminars and can pick up about 8 bushels of different varieties that would be greatly appreciated. Send a private message on FlyerTalk to Frugal Travel Guy and of course we will be paying for the apples. Thanks

•Balima and legalalien have volunteered to be our local Chicago contacts and help with the purchase of local materials and getting the logos on to the display boards. Howie will be in contact as he has the logos. Would each of you touch base with the ThePointsGuy to see if he needs any help with the Saturday night cocktail event? PM on FT should work.

•Skiadcock is running the charity raffle again and she needs volunteers. You may contact her by PM on FlyerTalk at skiadcock to offer assistance with this very important job. Thanks.

•DLouise37 is again handling the projectors and set up of the PowerPoint presentations. I believe we have an assistant for him this year but if you can lend a hand there, I know he would appreciate the backup. Dlouise37 by FT PM for that one.

•Speakers Please get your PowerPoint presentations to Howie before the event begins.

•Sponsors: Make sure Howie has your logo if he doesn’t already!

•Attention All Bloggers: One of the seminars is Ask the Bloggers and you are all welcome. I’ll need your name, blog name, and email address asap if you will be in attendance and want face time with your readers. I’m sure some of the questions will be quite interesting. As I don’t know how many will be there the format is still up in the air at this time. Get to me as soon as possible so I can get a head count. rick@frugaltravelguy.com will work for that one.

To all those attending and volunteering, thank you for making your event another success. Lots to learn, people to meet and fun to be had. If I missed anything send me a PM on FT at Frugal Travel Guy

A relative in Chicago--it turns out--is having an anniversary on Friday. So i decided to spend some time in the city, hence a few questions for our local Chicago friends.

1. Arriving on Thursday morning and staying (probably) at Four Points downtown till Friday afternoon. I know there is an M line (?) into the city, is it a viable option? If not how much is a cab?

2. Want to spend a day sightseeing. Never been to Chicago, so what to see?

3. Going for a banquet to Wheeling on Friday night, so considering renting a car for the rest of the weekend (I'm leaving on Monday). Am I overreacting? How much would a taxi be from downtown to Wheeling and from there to our hotel?

4. What's the best (domestic) lounge at ORD that sells passes?

Thanks and please feel free to share your other Chicago tips too:). Thanks.

1. The Blue line. You get it at Terminal 2 at ORD & it takes you into the city. Think it's $2.50. Certainly viable. Cabs can be up to $50 depending on traffic.

2. See the Chicago forum. Lots of suggestions there. A FTer recently did the boat architecture tour & that gets good reviews, but again the Chicago forum will have a plethora of suggestions/recommendations.

3. Define "best" & also whether you'd have access airside. Can't remember if you can go from T1 to T3 airside (although I think you can). Some of the lounges only have 1-time pass, not 1-day pass. Often they're $35-50. What are you hoping to get from the lounge to justify the cost?

4. It will be cheaper to get a car for the weekend than it will be to cab it to/from Wheeling and hotel (and you'll get points depending on which car rental agency you use).

Cheers.

Thanks for your suggestions, Sharon. Will certainly check the Chicago forum, but don't think the architectural tour is for me. As a first-time visitor with a very limited time, I'm thinking more of a bus or walking tour if anything.

Having done the boat tour and recommended it to others, I think it would give you a good overview. But if it is more your thing, the same architectural society does do walking tours.

The best things to do in Chicago depend on your preferences.
1)If you like tourist things-go to Navy Pier, walk the Mag Mile, do the observation deck at Willis Tower
2) If you are a foodie- go to Hot Dougs for casual food or Alinea for some super upscale cuisine.
3) bookworm?- check out Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House or Oak Park walking tour
4) Like to chill - Go to Kingston Mines and Green Mill for some excellent live music.

There is much to do, so if you can be more specific, that would be helpful.

I am late in arranging my flight details due to possible medical issues but I have the "all" clear from my Doctors in attending the Seminars. Under normal circumstances, I would have reserved the host hotel right away but with so much uncertainity on my medical, I just reserved the conference before it got sold out, booked refundable hotel/car reservations and see where the "chips" fall. Lucky for me, they "fell" in the right direction!! ^

I used 12.5K AA miles for SNA-ORD and I am booked on the 6PM Friday Oct 12 evening flight. (the only coach saver award available on Friday 10/12 from LAX airports). I like the SNA airport with the nice Admiral's club. I will try to standby for the Friday morning flights to ORD.

For the return, no decent AA/UA saver inventory until Tuesday (Oct 16) so I bought a DL ticket ORD-LGB. (I know the following question will arise "why fly DL when I am AA Plat?). The ticket was $100 cheaper ($140ai!!) and DL goes into my closest airport (LGB) and I live only 2.5 miles from there so wife can easily pickup me up from there. I also got a late afternoon Monday flight and I need to top off my DL account for an award so that is one way I can do it.

For the hotel, I am staying at the Crowne Plaza Northbrook on the 5K/night Pointsbreak special ^ and I got a nice deal on the Hertz rental car. ($52ai for 3 days at ORD--more taxes than base rate w/ a nice coupon ;)). If I am successful in getting my daytime standby flights, I can rent for alot less at the nearby Hertz HLE and return @ORD. ^

Bottom line: I am glad I can go to the Chicago Seminars!! I am looking forward to seeing everybody and learning new things. Being there for the 3rd time, I know there will be some great new things the speakers will discuss! I will not look the same because I lost well over 100 lbs and please bear with me in conversations as I am speech impared due to my December 2011 head/neck surgery.

I've semi-finalized my stay in Chicago. My hotels are:

10/11-10/12: Four Points Chicago.
10/12-10/13: Holiday Inn Elk Grove.
10/13-10/15: Sheraton Suites Elk Grove.

Barring any unforeseen, I'm renting a car on the 12th for the duration. So for those of you folks who're also staying at the Sheraton Suites, I'll be happy to give you a ride to and from the home hotel. Seats as you can imagine are limited, so send your PMs to "reserve"--first come, first served, you know...

A shout-out to the organizers. If you need another volunteer AFTER the closing on Sunday, let me know. My flight is not until Monday, 5PM, so I'll be happy to help rather than sit at the hotel getting drunk:).

A sure sign that credit card churning and other activities are starting to take a toll on my organizational abilities: I booked the hotel right when registration opened, early enough to get one of the "executive" rooms, but it looks like I didn't circle back after the actual registration opened for the seminars. Duh!!

So, I have a room for the seminars, but can't actually go to the seminars. (I'm kicking myself!)

At any rate, I saw earlier posts of folks looking to share rooms. I have a 2 bed executive room for Saturday night. Since I'm local, I may drive out for drinks at the hotel bar (and to take appropriate knocks on my obvious poor organization skills) but I'm unlikely to stay at the hotel.

If any of you smart enough to register are still looking for a place to crash on Sat night, PM me to discuss.

Duh!!In my experience of organizing events for FlyerTalk members, there are always a few people who confirm their attendance — only to find that they are unable to attend for whatever reason, especially as the event dates get closer.

Before you release your room reservation to someone else, contact one of the organizers and find out if this indeed has happened. The worst that will happen is they deny your request...

Cheers,
Andy

Just got email from Sheraton listing the Elk Grove Stes starpick rates for $70 either Fri/Sat nites if that helps you or anyone out.

Priority Club Bonus Promotion Codes
In preparation for our stay at the host hotel or other Priority Club hotels in the area, I did a blog post about the Priority Club bonus point promotions with the four digit codes. Here is the link. http://frugaltravellawyer.com/2012/09/21/priority-club-bonus-points-chicago-do/ Please let me know if there are other codes to add to the list.
Looking forward to seeing everyone next month!

Thanks for the reminder and the detailed post. I was able to register for a bunch.

Hello,

Newbie here but very much looking forward to seminar. I live in downtown Chicago and will be commuting out; I think at least one person asked if anyone else lived downtown. PM if you want to discuss carpooling. Also, I work across the street from Hot Doug's and can see the front door from my window. Can potentially provide a wait time check if anyone wants it on Friday (although usually by Oct the lines are not too bad anymore). Thanks.

Just a note for first-timers like me: The HI Elk Grove has a complimentary airport shuttle. I wrongly assumed it was far enough away from ORD that it would not.

Could someone provide some details on whether this is an on-demand shuttle or if it runs periodically? Also, whether there is a special seminars schedule?

That was my thought, there will be a good number of us going to it around 4-5PM on Sunday as well, likely overloading it.

It runs on a schedule as I recall but we have way too many people coming in to all use the shuttle. IIRC it is about $25-$30 by cab. Double or triple up if you can and save some time waiting for the shuttle.

During the seminars we have a school bus moving people from the overflow hotels to the HI. It runs heaviest pre seminars and then when the seminars are over. There is a gap in the early afternoon.

Don't be afraid to call the hotel for the shuttle info. I think you'll find them very helpful. The bus runs at the end of the seminars to the airport as well on Snday. Seats about 55.

Anyone planning to stay at the Radisson for the 1 for 1 free night promo?

I booked for one night (Sun nite 10/14@Des Plains by ORD) using Cash & Points. A little pricey ($144 regular, $86.40 plus 5K pts but at least I got my Radisson stay for the free night promo out of the way). I have until 10/14 to cancel. This reservation is a very good use of C & P because I am getting more than a penny/point in the difference between the regular rate minus the cash part. ^

I forgot to book for Sun nite on the Priority Club pointsbreaks special so this Radisson stay will cover me for the free night promo which I plan to use at an expensive Radisson hotel. (like NYC or ?).

Since I needed one more night, this works out for me. And it is close to ORD.

Do C&P count for the promo?

I think so, since C&P earns points:

A "Qualifying Stay" is defined as a minimum one-night stay at a Participating Hotel on a Gold Point eligible rate with a check-in date on or after October 1, 2012 and check out date no later than December 31, 2012. Guest must be present at the Participating Hotel at both the time of check-in and check-out, enrolled in Club Carlson at or before the time of check-in, and registered in the Promotion no later than the time of check-out.

http://www.clubcarlson.com/specialoffers/offerdetail.jsp?offerId=3129203

"Gold Points will be earned on the cash portion of a Points + Cash award night for eligible, paid room rates."

I have an <$70 semi-mattress run/semi-get out of the house for a night room booked at one near my house so I'm all set with the promo

I am local so if anyone last minute will be a no show please pm me.

I believe the organizers stated that the tickets are non transferable/non refundable. I bought a ticket knowing there is a high probability that I may not attend for medical reasons. I was/am fully aware that my ticket would be non refundable/non transferable and I wanted to secure my place so I took the chance and bought the ticket before they were sold out.

It turned out that I am cleared to attend the conference so the "chips" fell in the right direction.

The conference organizers have alot of things to do and are overwhelmed with all their duties to make this year's conference an excellent value for us attendees. To add to the headaches of having to worry about refunds/transfers, etc would be alot of extra work for the organizers and I agree with the policy of no refunds/transfers.

Bottom line: On my ticket, I decided to buy the ticket and take the chance that I was not able to attend for medical reasons. I fully was/are aware of the no refunds/transfers policy as that is the policy--like it or not.

Booked for the Westin Chicago Northwest for Friday and Saturday, one night with AAA rate the second night with Starpoints. I'll have a rental car, so anyone staying there and needing a lift to the host hotel let me know.

Sunday I'll be staying at the Radisson Blu Aqua Chicago. Not the most economical way to get the free Radisson night, but it's a hotel I'd like to try and I'll be exploring the city a bit so I figure it'll be worth it. (Booked a Cash & Points rate.)

Looking forward to meeting everyone! :D

I just spoke to the manager of the HI Elk Grove. All three hotels have shuttles running to and from O'hare. The Holiday Inn will be running on demand on Friday when most of you arrive. When you have your luggage (as if) call them at 847-437-6010 to see where the shuttle is at that time. Again you may want to share a cab. FT or MP luggage tags will come in handy at the Ohare Shuttle Terminal

Just a heads up, even though my talk is in the "beginner" slot, it will be focusing on more advanced stuff--you should know before you come what a mileage mall is, how to use it, have used them before probably, etc. What I'll be sharing is a process/formula for taking mileage mall deals and turning them into anywhere from a few hundred K miles to a few million at a very low CPM or perhaps even making a monetary profit. So it will be pretty advanced in that sense, but if you have the basics, you should be fine.

Bring some moola!

Hi there! As everyone starts packing, just a reminder to bring some $$ (US, Canadian, Australia), Euros or Great Britain Pounds for the charity raffle. We want to raise lots of $$ for 3 great charities!!

And yes - we do take those blasted dollar coins that Mr. Pickles got everyone hooked on if anyone has any left.

Charities:

The charities this year are:

www.airlineamb.org

Airline Ambassadors International (AAI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization affiliated with the United Nations and recognized by the US Congress. It began as a network of airline employees using their pass privileges to help others and has expanded into a network of students, medical professionals, families and retirees who volunteer as "Ambassadors of Goodwill" in their home communities and abroad.

AAI provides humanitarian aid to children and families in need as well as relief and development to under-privileged communities worldwide. We escort children in need, hand-deliver humanitarian aid to orphanages, clinics, and remote communities, raise public awareness and involve youth in humanitarian efforts around the world.

Wounded Warrior Project is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization. The mission of Wounded Warrior Project™ (WWP) is to honor and empower wounded warriors. The purpose of WWP is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

http://www.dahlfund.org

Captain Jason Dahl was the pilot of United 93, which was hijacked and subsequently crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on September 11th, 2001.In 2002, the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund was established to provide deserving aviation students whose resources are limited a scholarship grant in Jason’s name. Originally available to students at Dahl’s Alma Mater, San Jose State University and Metro State University in Denver where Dahl lived, the program has since been expanded to national status as an IRS recognized 501(c)3 non-profit program supported through corporate and individual donations alike.

Prizes:

The drawing will be held on Sunday morning & we've got some nice prizes, including 2-night stays in New York City and Las Vegas, as well as Kindles, a$300 Best Buy gift card donated by FTer poptarts, and other great items.

Note - if anyone wants to add something to the prize pile/stuff to be given out, please PM me what you're contributing ASAP - and don't forget to bring it with you. The more prizes the better! At last year's Seminar event, we had some prizes donated by attendees & sponsors.

Charity Raffle Ticket Pricing:

3 Tickets for $10
7 Tickets for $20
18 Tickets for $50
40 Tickets for $100

Volunteers

I know it seemed like I was everywhere last year, but I had some folk helping me as it's hard to get to 500+ people. Those who have said they'll help me with selling charity raffle tickets this year, please PM me with your mobile #s and when you'll be arriving/can start help selling tickets. If you already did, please do so again. I've been swamped with real-life work.

If you've not met me, when you get to the event look for this person (ie, me):

Ha ha. I think there are a few different ones, but it attaches to an iPhone and folks swipe their cards. I don't have one, but I see them used all the time by small business, charity events, etc.... ;) I believe it is free to get and then they charge a percent per swipe (2.75%). So you lose some, but you may get much more in the end. Just a thought!

Weather is 55/43 on Fri, 70/58 on Sat (and raining), 62/44 on Sun (and raining).

Actually Howie & I discussed this summer using the square thing, but we needed to sort some logistics given he'd be pretty busy with his other activities and I don't have an iphone. I dropped the ball on getting back to him to sort out logistics as I was swamped w/ some real-life work. And there's no way in hades I dare ask a couple days in advance when he & Rick are smack dab in the middle of the overall seminar logistics.

BTW - I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try in one regard. The past 2 years people said oh I'd donate more if I could put it on a credit card. I thought if we had set up this year for cc's, we'd find out if they really did donate more ;) We can try it for next year; experiment to be continued...

So bring those $$ (US/Canadian/Australian), Euros & GPBs!

When I was in charge of SMD2 charity raffle, we raised quite a bit of $$. I attribute that to a couple hundred people being enclosed in a narrow aluminum tube & an open bar (and of course my persuasion/cajoling skills) :D. I'm sure adding in a cc plus narrow tube & open bar would help even more!

One of the things Howie & I discussed in the summer was doing it either via square on-site or some other method in advance, so that when people picked up their badge at check-in they'd also get their raffle tickets & there'd be a star on their badge so we'd know that they had already donated (not that that would stop me from asking if they wanted to donate a bit more more now that they were on-site ;)). It was really trying to sort out which method to use & figure out the logistic that I was supposed to f/u w/ Howie on, and by the time I realized it a few days ago I didn't want to put an extra burden on him or Rick.

If by chance we can figure out something on the fly, great. But if not, then we'll do it next year. So folks, don't forget to bring $$/E/GBP.

Cheers.

Let me think about this & talk to FrugalTravelGuy when he lands in Chicago today. Traditionally we've had a must be present to win or give your tickets to someone else to check if you've won if your flight leaves early, but I think we might be willing to sort something out. On the one hand it makes sense to keep it to those actually attending; on the other this is also for charity. I'll talk to FTG later today & post what we've decided.

I spoke with FrugalTravelGuy & we decided that since the money raised is going to charity, those who are unable to attend the seminar event but would like to buy charity raffle tickets to contribute to 3 great charities & in hopes of winning one of the prizes will be able to do so.

Here's how it will work. If you want to donate, PM me ASAP & tell me how much $$ & which currency you're donating so I know how many tickets to allocate to you. I will respond with my address so you can mail cash, check or money order (please don't mail presidential coins!) & I will 'front' the $$ for you & allocate the appropriate number of tickets & will write your handle on the tickets. I will put your tickets in the 'big bowl' that we draw from & assign someone to check your tickets to see if you're one of the winners.

If you win, I'll accept the prize on your behalf and then PM you for your address so I can mail you the prize. If you're paying by check, I will mail you the prize after the check has cleared (that's the checks & balances part of this process ;)). For those who are donating foreign currency, it will have to be cash.

Again, here are the prizes & the # of tickets/currency:

US/Canadian/Australian

1 Ticket for $5
3 Tickets for $10
7 Tickets for $20
18 Tickets for $50
40 Tickets for $100

Euro:

2 Tickets for 5 Euros
5 Tickets for 10 Euros
11 Tickets for 20 Euros
27 Tickets for 50 Euros
58 Tickets for 100 Euros

Great Britain Pounds:

3 Tickets for 5 GBP
6 Tickets for 10 GBP
12 Tickets for 20 GBP
28 Tickets for 50 GBP
60 Tickets for 100 GBP

I tried to match exchange rates/values when figuring out tickets per spend. Obviously it's not an exact science, but close enough.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Information for those arriving at O'Hare:

The Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village hotel shuttle runs every half hour. Look for signs directing you to the "Bus and Shuttle Center" at ORD, and when you get there go to "Door 2" and wait for the shuttle.

The HI seems to be running 2 lime-green-and-white vehicles, both being those rather tall boxy vehicles that are larger than vans.

It probably isn't necessary to phone the front desk during normal arrival hours, 847-437-6010, to tell them you are at the airport.

For those who wish to use a credit card to donate, you'll need to see me Fri night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. For Sat night donations, you'll need to see Howie.

For those using cash or presidential coins, you can see me or any of my volunteers to buy the raffle tickets.

The Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village shuttle normally runs every hour...departing the hotel on the hour, departing ORD Door 2 on the half-hour.

This schedule may be modified to run every half hour (2 buses) when a large crowd is expected. The best guess from the front desk is that they will go to 2 buses Friday at about 2 PM.

The dress code is casual casual.

I would recommend bringing a laptop to take notes. Lots of folks do.

There are very few electric outlets in the seminar areas. Because of the very large number of us using laptops, tablets or notebooks (to say nothing of phones needing recharging), please everyone try to bring your power brick and/or multi-plug outlets. That way many people can access the limited power.

Hi. This is FYI for those coming to the Holiday Inn Elk Grove on the hotel shuttle from OHare.
Follow the red signs/logo for bus shuttle transportation center. You will need to go down one floor walk on moving walkway and watch for red sign on left. You take the elevator then up one floor and go to door 3 hotel shuttles. Just look for the Holiday Inn Elk Grove shuttle--there were two there when we arrived.

My morning flights from SNA had only one seat to sell so I thought my chances of standy were slim. Also, I was so exhausted from lack of sleep so I decided to take my originally scheduled flight @6PM from SNA getting in close to midnight. It takes me alot longer than average to pack since I have alot of medical supplies to pack, etc.

Also, I am doing a o/w from local HLE to SNA (for $8 more than shuttle, less than cab--$41ai) and I told them to give me a car they wanted to get rid of. SNA is only 20 miles so if they gave me a very large SUV, the gas won't be a burden. (even @$4.69/gal). Due to the crummy weather last night, I got a Chrysler 200 convertible and the weather is too bad. (I like the car as a rental! ;)). It will be 70 degrees and partly cloudy so I will drive a few hours with the top down on the "coast" highway (PCH) down to Orange County & SNA is a short distance away when I want to head there. :)

I am looking forward to going to the conference & I'll see ya tomorrow.

Just arrived home.

The good news! We raised $9,424 for 3 great charities! I think the fact that we were able to accept (mileage-earning) credit cards had something to do with it ;) :p :D The #1 card used was the Starwood Amex (which I could never get to swipe properly; thank you Howie for coming to my rescue each time on that one) & the Chase Sapphire card.

A big round of thanks go to my volunteers, the attendees who donated $$, and of course those who donated items for the raffle.

For those who won items that we didn't have the certs on-site or those who won who weren't in attendance but who had donated, I'll send everything out this week.

BTW - another big thanks to Howie for being the 'go-to' guy & who also did the 'bump up for bonus' on the raffle ticket sales. ^

Originally I was going to say I survived the Chicago Seminar Event because I was exhausted running around doing raffle ticket sales & almost losing my voice.

But I think saying I survied the Chicago Seminar Event had more meaning when people started getting messages their flights were cancelled or delayed & beaubo came out of the ballroom holding up his phone which had an alert message: "Severe Weather Alert. Tornado Warning. Get Inside. Watch until 3pm" and then someone else got an "Extreme Weather Alert" message. And then to hear the air warning siren go off & realize it wasn't a test & see everyone heading into the ballroom because it had no windows! But being true FTers, everyone kept talking miles & points anyway :D

Cheers.

First time attendee here, and I will be coming back in future years! I echo the others by saying big thanks to the organizers and all the volunteers and of course the sponsors that helped make it a success. I respect their dedication to give up the chance to hear the speakers, in order to staff the booths or deal with questions and problems that attendees may have. Everyone I met this weekend had something really interesting to share, and was a pleasure to meet. Rick was right...that collectively there is a tremendous amount of power in the group as a whole, individually we hold just a small piece of the knowledge that is out there. Congrats again, and safe travels to you all!
