California - 17 Mile Drive Post Office Visit = No Toll?

I seem to remember somewhere in the back recesses of my mind that if you tell the person at the 17 Mile Drive toll gate that you are going to the U.S. Post Office in Pebble Beach that you don't have to pay the toll.

The theory being that the Post Office is provided by the government for the general public, and that it is impermissible to charge a fee to access this public facility.

I've googled and found nothing. I believe my memory of this is older than the internet (yow!)

Would be nice to share, there are others that occasionally take the 17 mile drive!

If someone wants to know, feel free to PM me. Happy to share, just trying to keep it as discreet as possible. :)

Also, if your destination is the Lodge at Pebble Beach or the Inn at Spanish Bay, you do not have to pay the toll. No proof of reservation is required. You can just be going there to have a meal or a drink or listen to the band that plays in the lounges.

Have you tried it? I thought it was pay the fee and get it back by dining at one of the 17 Mile restaurants like Roy's, etc. That's a good way to go if you were planning to eat someplace along the way.

We drive down from Santa Cruz quite often, especially to Spanish Bay, often just to sit in the lounge and listen to the band. We just tell the guard at the gate where we are going and we have never had to pay.

CApreppie: If your PM to the OP says what I think it does, you might want to know that guest numbers are tracked. Our family has received snippy letters stating that if we allow in too many guests, we might be asked to pay for them. There are a few real PITA's in the property owner's association, and one of them lived across the street from my parents.

p.s. to the OP: the cost of driving the 17 Mile Drive isn't a road toll, it's an admission fee to a private entity, i.e. Del Monte Forest
