Hello - I'm new here (again) - last time I stopped by was in 2010 when planning a trip to Tokyo.

We're traveling to Dublin July 19 - 28 and when I do a search for airfares, US Airways is coming up as the cheapest. But I'm leery about flying a US based carrier as my husband who travels within the US often, despises US Air.

Is there a major difference in services and amenities (entertainment/food) when flying intl with a US airline?

Our last intl flight was on Singapore Air, and we loved the seat back entertainment. It made the trip from LAX to Tokyo fly by - a few movies, a nap, a couple of TV shows, another movie and we were there!

My preference would be Virgin or Aer Lingus (if the prices come down)....any other suggestions?

Well connections will be involved either way - BA via LHR, Air France via CDG both spring to mind spring to mind off hand. Take a look at Air New Zealand via Heathrow also (with an onward connection to Dublin), although their economy seating isn't as spacious as it used to be, the food and entertainment is pretty good).

US international isn't unbearable (i.e there are still meals provided, if meagre) but has no individual in-seat entertainment and their aircraft are quite old. Aer Lingus will require connecting at BOS/ORD/JFK which seems a waste to do a transcon and then break and start another flight that's just as long IMHO.

BA has worked well for me with a yyz - Lhr dub itinerary. I do not no much about the other airlines other than Aer Lingus can be costly if you don't book early enough. Also, flying from Canada is expensive and when I was booking my flights for my own upcoming trip to DUB BA always came in cheaper. The service is excellent as well. There are numerous flights from LHR to DUB so if your longhaul is delayed there are countless options. Oh and the connecting flight to DUB from LHR is operated by Aer Lingus.:)

Try to VS nonstop to LHR with an onwward connection to DUB with BMI or EI. Can't imagine longhaul on US. Torture enough for 4 hr domestic flights. 8+ hour longhaul, not too much. Have a great trip.
