I will be flying transatlantic Chicago (ORD) - London (LHW) late July with Iberia. This flight has confirmed the aircraft that will be used is indeed a 747. This has me pretty excited as i've never flown in the Queen of the Skies before. I have flown A340's numerous occasion, and even had the pleasure of flying the new A380. As far as i was aware Iberia did not fly the 747's anymore, This flight is the only flight that month that is using the 747 and not Iberia's usual a340-600's. Anyone know where this aircraft is from, is it a lease, or is it one of BA's?

Also, anyone know whether it will be a 744 or a 742?

If this is a direct flight you will be on a BA aircraft with IB flight number, ie IB codeshare on BA metal

IB does not operate 747s

And as such this would be a BA 747-436

Check on the BA website using your confirmation code to see if the flight is operated by them - assuming it doesn't say as much in your reservation. I flew from SFO to LHR to Spain on an "Iberia" ticket and the TATL flight was on a BA 747. BA is great, by the way.

Not relevant to the OP, but my first IB sector was MIA-MAD on a 747-200. Upgraded to F from J too, just 8 First seats in the bubble.

I was like whaaaaaaaaaaat I knew Iberia had operated the 747s at one point but they were long gone a while ago.

I thought perhaps this was an outlandish thread that IB had ordered new ones

false alarm...:(

there is nothing to see here move along;)

IB hasn't had 747's in their fleet in years. You're flying on BA metal. I suggest asking on the BA board.

It'll be a 744. 2 variants of layout, all the details in the BA Board sticky.

Whatever you do, don't let anyone tag your checked baggage to LHW. :D

Yeah, my bad. That didn't entirely make sense. What i meant is, has anyone actually flown a 747 recently when booking with Iberia?

I would guess thousands of people have.

Why not have a read of the BA forum and stickys where you will find answers to almost everything you could want to know about a BA aircraft and cabin ?.

I'm sure they have. On 747's that have British Airways on the side.

Iberia last operated Boeing 747 (-400) in 2006; Iberia also operated -100s, -200s and -300s in the past, even on routes that have reappeared like MAD-LAX, and iirc, MAD-SFO, maybe never to be seen again.

If i were on an IB codeshare operated by BA, I would certainly check out the British Airways executive Club Forum; they have seating etc. very organised over there.

You will be flying, as others have indicated, a British Airways Boeing 747-446 as an Iberia codeshare. The good news is, as you are going on to Newcastle, you will make flight connections at Terminal 5 at Heathrow; Iberia arrives at Terminal 3.

I flew a couple of BA 747-446 within the last two weeks; they flew as AA and IB codeshares, as well as some others. Do check the BAEC Forum for seats to avoid or to try for, or use SeatGuru or SeatExpert. Iberia and British are both owned by AIG, so they codeshare quite a bit.

But as we believe you are not flying on IB metal, but BA, this is irrelevant.

Iberia and British are both owned by AIG, so they codeshare quite a bit.

Iberia and British Airways are both owned by IAG. Limited relevance to code sharing.

Makes no difference to inboard experience who you book with, or what airline code it is under. The question is who's metal will you end up on.

Wow, this new FT member got an earful of screams, didn't he. He was asking a question - a reasonable one- and was looking forward to flying on a 747 for the first time.

Welcome to FT, DrewsieJ! It is usually a little more welcoming. Hope your flight is fun, and BA should be a nice experience. Hope to see you back on FT.

Not really - he received good information on his aircraft, a BA 747, and how to get seating and other information, as well as the easier connection at T-5 instead of having to make the interterminal trek.

I was even corrected for my "AIG" typo, as of course, it is International Airlines Group (IAG) that owns BA and IB. But not everyone reads every post as well as they could and could get confused. No worries, on FT someone will come along with the proper information and here it has happened.
