Noticed that LH (FRA) and TK (IST) will begin service to VKO this march. How does the airport compare to DME or SVO?

No idea, but there is a railway connection to the airport. This is also the airport that handles VIP flights, so if you plan on taking a cab, plan on being delayed.

I'm flying from there soon. I will give my opinion.
What I may say now is that it is far better situated from traffic point of view.
Not too busy traffic from\to the centre even in rush hour

I found VKO to be clean and new, relatively uncrowded, and easy to get to/from. There is an express train to it from Kievskaya metro stati:cool:n.

Yes. It turned out to be clean, not overcrowded (I'd say almost empty).
I passed customs, checkin and passp control within 15 min.
It is much more convenient than domodedovo.
But only a few DuFry shops (that's unimportant imho) and only a few corridors - so you have to go to the plane by bus (not comfortable with children etc particularly if it's cold outside).

I flew out of VKO on my way to Magnitogorsk in 2010. Before that, I hadn't flown from there since about 1996, when it was more of a charter/private airport, and I didn't have great memories. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to see a not-bad cafeteria (where I ate dinner before my flight) and a bunch of shops, but in general the airport is more or less unreconstructed. It has had a minor cosmetic facelift, but absolutely nothing along the lines of DME.

Both LH and TK will flight from brand new terminal 'A' opened 2010. Some nice photos here (http://d0cent.livejournal.com/135939.html). Today this terminal opens for domestic flights only, international part of it will be ready close to March. Today terminal 'B' is used for international flights, but all them will be moved to 'A' lately. Most people visited VKO saw only terminal 'B' or even very old domestic terminal 'D'. The 'D' is used only for few flight to North Caucasus and will be closed and demolished lately to free space for terminal 'A' third phase.
Pluses:
- It is new. Sterile clean, empty, modern and accessible.
- VKO is the closest airport to Moscow city.
- It has connection to Moscow by three not too busy highways (Kievskoye shosse M3, Borovskoye shosse and a little bit further - Minskoye shosse M1).
- It has underground railway station with 'Aeroexpress' train to Moscow center.
Minuses:
- It is new. :) It means that there are not too many duty-free shops and cafes maybe.
- VKO serves President, Prime minister and official government delegations flights. They use separate terminal but same runway and sky :). This potentially can cause flight delays.
- 'Aeroexpress' trains goes hourly while trains to SVO and DME goes every half an hour. Maybe lately with more traffic they will change their timetable.

Wow! That is a massive departure from my UTAir experience 18 months ago. Thanks for the photos, otherwise I never would have believed it!

I am very impressed! I have only flown from VKO three times: a private charter from the VIP terminal (not the VVP terminal, however:p), an international flight from a renovated sterile and bland terminal (B?), and once domestically from an old Soviet-style terminal (D?) on a hot June day. The experience with the latter two flights--particularly the domestic flight--was enough to make me steer well-clear of VKO. The photos of the new terminal may cause me to give it another try, however, particularly if LH and TK (and some semi-reputable domestic carriers) fly from there.

Transaero, Russian second largest airline, may start flying from Vnukovo said Russian 'Kommersant' newspaper according to three anonymous sources in aviation and fuel market. They talk about 20 flights to Ukraine, Israel, Far East and some other destinations daily.

Austrian Airlines and SAS, Star Alliance members, can possibly start flying from Vnukovo said Russian newspaper 'Vedomosti' today. SWISS is also studying Vnukovo's offer.
Vitaliy Vantsev, co-owner of the Vnukovo airport, said about negotiations between VKO and Singapore Airlines in december.
It seems Star Alliance has some big plans about its presence in Vnukovo.

The space above the horizontal line is under construction now - this is the second phase.
Below you can see the terminal is divided into two parts. The right part is being used for domestic flights now. The left part is in the test mode and serves only few flights. Everything will change in March. All domestic flights will be moved to the left part. The right part will serve international flights, you can even see passport control line on the scheme already (it does not function today). Сommercial zones are in gray.
The right part has 8 gates, al least 7 of them are with jet bridges already installed (I'm not sure about the upper one). So we can delete this: Few jet bridges are ready now (airport ramp reconstruction delays), so maybe you will use airside bus.

Thanks for all the updates, KVentz! It would be great if all the *A alliance airlines were out of one airport. DME has become overcrowded, it would be great if they all moved to VKO (including LOT, SAS, and TK from SVO). I've also been holding out hope that UN will become a *A member (some talk lately has been about UTAir, which would not be as good as Transaero, in my opinion).

Well, UTAir has much more destinations on Russia than Transaero (UN). In the case it could be more preferable for *A as the first Russian member.
Returning to VKO: they are going to be certified for taking the A380 this year.

Vnukovo airport is going to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access soon. First tests will start this month. There is only paid Wi-Fi in VKO currently.

Today's news briefly according to Vnukovo Airport English Twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/VKOAirport_Eng).
Vnukovo and Transaero have signed memorandum of strategic cooperation in the next 10 years today.
Transaero have plans to operate from Vnukovo to Blagoveschensk, Magadan, Kiev, Tel Aviv and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky since May 2012. New summer schedule will be announced lately. Transaero also plans to start flyng to Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles next winter.
Vnukovo will provide a priority for high-capacity aircrafts (A380, B747 and B777) at all stages of a service cycle at the airport.
Vnukovo will also provide separate Transaero-branded passenger zone including registration, ticket-office, etc.
The airport will give a space for business and first "Imperial" class lounges including all equipment.
Vnukovo will provide two sections in it's hangar for servicing B747, B777 and all other Transaero aircrafts.
Vnukovo and Transaero also announced building of new hangar for A380 and B747-800 and a training center with 4 flight simulators.

According to this Moscow Times article, they'll be keeping a base at DME as well, but looking to VKO to provide them with some expansion options, calling the VKO based flights "business routes." I guess that means leasure routes stay at DME.

Second phase of Vnukovo (VKO) terminal A construction: inner atrium and ground control tower opens Dec, 2012.
Ramp reconstruction. All ramp surface is lowered about 3 meters down to match terminal and runway level. Most works will be finished Nov 30, 2012.

«Transaero» airline extends route map from Vnukovo airport during the winter season
Flights operated by "Transaero" airline in the winter season from Vnukovo airport will supplement with new destinations.
Within the framework of increase of domestic flights from Vnukovo airport "Transaero" airline starts to operate daily flight to Yekaterinburg from the beginning of the winter season. Changes will also occur in flights from the CIS countries. For the first time the airline will operate scheduled flights to Kazakhstan from Vnukovo. Moreover, in the schedule there will be flights to Astana on Friday and to Almaty on Saturday.
Airline will start operating daily one flight to London also from Vnukovo. In addition to that, "Transaero" offers to its passengers the opportunity to purchase tickets for code-share flights with Virgin Atlantic Airlines from Moscow to Boston, Orlando, Los Angeles and San Francisco. These flights will be operated with a change in the British capital. Besides, the airline will serve a daily flight to Pardubice and one flight per week to Barcelona.
For the convenience of passengers who prefer outdoor activities, "Transaero" has extended the list of free baggage sports equipment on all its flights. Now in addition to the equipment for skiing, surfing and golf; passengers can also carry equipment for diving free of charge.

Vnukovo International Airport is ready for autumn and winter months

In the Vnukovo Airport conference on the readiness for autumn and winter navigation 2012-2013 took place. The main report was made by the Deputy General Director of JSC "Vnukovo Airport" Sergei Solntsev.
First, he pointed out that many of projects within the framework of reconstruction and modernization of the airport have already been implemented or are in the final stage. For instance, for December 2012 it is scheduled to complete the reconstruction of the apron, adjacent to the terminal A, reconstruction works of the runway number 1 and its extension for 500 meters. At the same time, many projects are still to be done including the put into operation of the terminal A. In connection with these renovations some adjustments related to the specifics of the autumn and winter seasons have been made.
However, all planned activities to prepare the airport for the upcoming winter have been already completed. Thus, airfield pavements have been repaired, rutting and sags of the wheels on the chassis of aircraft stands have been eliminated, labeling on the runways, on the taxiways, on the aircraft taxi routes and traffic machinery have been updated. To prevent flooding during the rainy season and snowmelt gutters and drainage system of the airfield has been checked.
All special vehicles of the Vnukovo airport have been put through necessary maintenance checks and from now it passes to winter norms of fuel consumption.
More than 70 units of snowplows are ready to start on the runway. This is enough to ensure the operation of Vnukovo Airport during all these winter months, regardless of weather conditions. Tools that measure the friction coefficient on runaway have been prepared and activated, backup and emergency power systems have been tested. Like last year, management and related services of Vnukovo airport have paid close attention to the volume of reagents for the treatment of airfield pavements and their timely delivery.
Moreover, maintenance of machinery for handling aircraft by de-icing fluid has been conducted: by the beginning of the winter season ten special vehicles have been prepared. De-icing fluid for handling aircrafts has been also prepared in sufficient volume.
Airport has also organized practical staff training for the fire and rescue, search and rescue operations. New German evacuation equipment for small class aircrafts and business aviation has been purchased.
To improve the comfort of passengers staying at the airport, all necessary measures to maintain thermal conditions in terminals and to ensure the functioning of heating systems have been taken. Technical state of water supply, sewerage, ventilation and air conditioning systems has been checked.

Lufthansa has been handled 200 000 passengers from Vnukovo airport
Vnukovo Airport congratulates its partner – Lufthansa airline, who has been carried 200000 passengers carried since its first flight from Vnukovo airport. To celebrate this event, all the passengers registered on Lufthansa flights on 6th of November got sweet gifts.

"Transaero" airlines launched flights from Vnukovo airport to Saint Petersburg

Flights are operated wih Boeing 737-500 aircraft, five times per week. On Monday, Tuesday and Friday departures from Pulkovo airport are at 23:20 with arrival at Vnukovo at 00:40 the next day. On Thursdays, the plane will depart at 00:05 with landing in Moscow at 01:20. On Sunday, departure is at 22:30. At the airport Vnukovo aircraft is to land at 23:50.

Scheduled flights will be operated daily with comfortable Boeing 737. Departure from terminal A of Vnukovo Airport is at 00:30. Arrival to the Koltsovo airport is at 04:55. The return flight will be served on the same day at 06:10 with arrival to the Russian capital at 06:35. For all the airports time is local.
Yekaterinburg is the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk region, the fourth largest city in Russia and major industrial center. It has the status of the center of the Urals Federal District. On 28 October 2012 “Transaero” Airlines start to operate its flight from Vnukovo International Airport to Heathrow Airport. Representatives of airline “Transaero” and Vnukovo Airport take part in a solemn ceremony devoted to first flight to London.
“For six months of cooperation between “Transaero” Airlines and Vnukovo Airport, we have seen a high level of its services that create comfortable conditions for our passengers. The airline operates its flights from three airports in Moscow and, therefore, we can compare. We are pleased with our cooperation and are ready for further expansion and development. On behalf of the management of “Transaero” Airlines, I wish prosperity and growth of new passengers to Vnukovo, "- said Irina Frolova, the chief of passenger traffic at “Transaero” Airlines, in her speech.

He took part in the opening ceremony of the first flight and cut the red ribbon with the representatives of the airline and of the airport. For LH flights to FRA, what is the recommended time to arrive at the airport? Is 1.5-2 hours before the the flight sufficient?
For a 7:20pm departing flight, will an Aeroexpress Train departing Kievsky Train Station at 5pm and arriving at VKO airport 5:35pm be enough time?

That should be totally fine. Last time I was there at least, the airport was quite easy to get through. It's not that big.

If only United would come back to Moscow via this airport it would be truly a Star alliance airport which frankly Russia really needs. SVO Is too much of a Skyteam team monopoly
