So, I just wanted to provide an update. I reserved the private dining room at The Standard Grill which technically holds a max of 20. I thought the room could handle a couple more when I attended meFIRST's event...but probably not too many more. And, I don't know how strict The Standard will be (perhaps it's a fire code thing).
So, we currently have 16 "Yes"s and a bunch of "Maybe"s. If you are on the Maybe list, it would probably behoove you to move to Yes as early as possible as we won't be able to accommodate all Maybe's, if that makes sense.
Thank you.

As this is a volunteer effort, details are going to slip between the cracks. I am not a professional party organizer. At one point I thought I mentioned the limit...sorry if it was too late.
The Standard Grill offers two rooms, a private dining room (10-20 people) and a larger party space. meFIRST's event a year or so ago was in the private dining room and I very much enjoyed the get together. I thought the food and atmosphere were great and why reinvent the wheel for a new get together? (Personally, I thought the space could hold more people but perhaps it is a fire code thing.) The larger party space requires a bigger financial commitment.
If someone would like to try to book that larger space at The Standard or find another space that would hold more people, I am COMPLETELY cool with that. I won't take offense.
Just let me know so that I can cancel my reservation at The Standard. I don't want to get stuck with a big charge on my credit card for no shows.
Again, no hard feelings. Let me know how to proceed.
Edited to add: I am also surprised people are so quick to jump off the waitlist. We are just at 20 now with a short waitlist/maybe list. Things come up and people cancel. I believe meFIRST's event was well under 20 (perhaps 15?).

I don't think anyone is blaming you (I certainly am not), and I'd like to say kudos for organizing and starting the ball rolling on this; it seems like it was perfect timing for a lot of people who wanted to gather in NYC. :)
It just so happens that a few of us who didn't confirm early enough (again, our fault for sure) happen to know each other already so I think we decided to just make some alternate plans of our own... knowing that some of us might make it off the waitlist, but probably not all (there are some folks who haven't even posted here yet).
So at this point, with you having done all the footwork and organizing already, I think it's perfectly fine for you folks to have a fine time at what looks like an amazing event (I am a little jealous for sure). No need to change plans and create further confusion... no hard feelings, and many thanks again for taking all the heat as organizer.

Thanks. Your quoted passage makes me look a bit defensive -- and, after re-reading it I guess it does come off that way. I am not trying to be defensive. I feel bad the venue won't hold more and would be fine if those that got shut out find a bigger place. Go for it! I am cool with that. The more the merrier. :)

Just a quick fyi: it has come to my attention that there has been a bit of concern over the event's start time.
The Standard Grill has two time blocks for its private dining room: 11 AM - 2 PM and 2 PM - 5 PM. For our date, the latter block was already taken. So, there was no flexibility whatsoever.
The Standard even made me initial a separate line that said we will be fined if we aren't out of the room by 2 PM.
So, just an fyi....
meFIRST
Jan 27, 12, 9:57 pm
For people visiting from out of town (or unfamiliar with the velvet rope intricacies of NYC) = Demand exceeds supply on almost everything. To circumvent this problem NYCers pay more and/or try to add clout/influence where possible. (side topic, but...)
Normally, when I go to the Standard for brunch on the weekends (with a reservation) with another person, I am asked to wait 40 minutes to 1 hour, sitting at the bar, witnessing people get seated ahead of me. I usually get a table 2 bloody mary's later. About 40 minutes.
But you see, this time we won't have to wait because a private space has been reserved for us!
Those that were lucky enough to make the cut but don't feel like coming, come on a Sunday on your own, and you'll fully appreciate the ground work that has been done.
Being able to walk in to The Standard Hotel and be seated right away (no wait), in a private reserved space for brunch on a Sunday......that's pure luxury.
Granted the time isn't ideal for everyone, its not entirely bad. Neither is the experience.
The meatpacking district is its own little microcosm of NYC fab,
And for a Sunday, you get to be part of it. With this group. LOL.

Well, you laid the groundwork. The only reason I had the idea for this brunch was your original brunch. The food and location were perfect...so, why reinvent the wheel?!
But, yes, it is a rarity to walk into The Standard NYC and have no wait...even with a rez. And, it is a great room. Thank you.

I hate DRAMA so I want to make this as DRAMA-free as possible. ;)
Accordingly, I was thinking about doing some sort of Paypal payment thing a few days before the event. I believe my good friend, meFIRST, came up with suggestion.
The minimum spend per person (per The Standard) is $40. Perhaps we should do $40 a few days before the event and we will have much less to settle when we are finished.
I am completely open to suggestions (to avoid drama, of course). ;)

Great afternoon. Who could have predicted that this one would max out the room, necessitate an overflow brunch, and bring about any number of related get-togethers? Who needs the Oscars on this coast when our own drama flies in on its own from points south, and west, and north?
I doubt either host would ever again subject himself to this unique form of cat-herding, as one who attended the first and looks forward to the second, I appreciate the efforts involved.

It was a great brunch. Even we paid $3 over. Who knew.

My favorite part of the brunch was the unnamed Flyertalker that paid his overage with dollar coins from the US Mint. ;)

Every time I see those, I remember the scene from the Simpsons where Homer is talking about how friendly Moe the bartender is. Cut to Moe cocking a shotgun and pointing it at a bar patron, saying "Get out, and take your damn Sacajawea dollars with you."

Now that this brunch is behind us and reports are that everyone had a great time, I have to get something off my chest: the post below is one of the most obnoxious comments I've seen in the GLBT forum. Perhaps because I live in LA my view is jaded, but "velvet rope intricacies" and the snotty attitude implied by that post is not the New York City I generally encounter, nor the NYC I love.
LOL.

As an "out-of-towner", maybe my opinion dowen't matter, but as someone who absolutely loves NYC, (way way more than LA I might add! :p ) I feel quite scared to post a "like" to what you said.... ;)

I wasn't trying to be obnoxious, I was stating a fact.. I hate going there on the weekends. The wait....40 minutes, 60 minutes, but i have reservation, they don't care.
People were being picky about the time, the venue, etc I was merely trying to put it all in perspective, that 'we need to take what we can get'

- This is not my words, but rather a mentor of mine, (from 3 jobs ago, right when I first moved to NYC, in response to my complaints about life in NYC) I think about it sometimes, though I don't want to believe it....there is some truth to it, ugly as it may seem.
LA has sort of a different, but similar version of this, but less of the "demand exceeds supply" problem, not as prevalent.
I was trying to put things in perspective. Try coming in to the Standard on Fashion Week, I think it would be close to impossible to get in.

Too bad I missed the brunch. I was in LA for Oscar weekend. I could have met my next husband at the brunch. Hopefully there is another one soon. :)

Three jobs ago, my mentor told me that saying something obnoxious sounds obnoxious.
As someone who's lived in New York close to his entire life, I rarely find myself dealing with supply and demand concerns. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've always found that there are dozens of restaurants and bars willing to accept my money on short notice.
As others said, this isn't to diminish the hard work and great job of putting together this brunch, but to point out what was a major turnoff.

I think the supply and demand thing is about going to the hottest club, or the most exclusive restaurant. Of course I like to go to nice places but I'm not going to play that game. I'd rather wait to go to the coolest place for a while and have a lower stress experience. If someone sets up a brunch at the restaurant of the moment I'll try my hardest to go.

Ok - this thread for a very nice event has degenrated into discussion about the wording of posts about possible practices in NYC. As such, I'll thank the organizer for putting together a great event and lock the thread.
