I used to be a relatively regular visitor to Turtle Cove (between Cairns and Port Douglas) around the millennium. I found it more basic than its marketing would suggest but fun nonetheless. I know it then went into a steep decline with no investment. There were attempts to offload as timeshare units until it was sold at auction at about a fifth of its alleged value.
I am considering revisiting next winter, but can't find much that gives me confidence that it has changed sufficiently under the new ownership.
Reviews on TripAdvisor this year look (how can it put it) curiously uniform. All of them talk about upgrades to beachfront rooms for returning guests, but the most I was offered was a 10% discount against the outrageous AUD292 price tag.
Does anyone have any recent real experience of this place? (BTW, I know all the arguments about saving my money by staying somewhere decent in Port Douglas and visiting the beach on a day pass - so I am not looking for a re-run thanks :). That said, if anyone can confirm that access to the beach is still free for non-guests I would appreciate it.)
