Middle East - Connecting the Jetway in TLV

View Full Version : Connecting the Jetway in TLV

Can someone please explain why it ALWAYS takes a good 10 to 15 minutes (no exaggeration) after parking at the gate in TLV for the jetway to connect to the plane and the door to be opened? Do they take turns on the joy stick or something? In JFK, EWR, LHR and just about anywhere else, the jetway connects in seconds and we're off the plane a few seconds later. In TLV I don't even bother standing up for ten minutes after parking.

Maybe they have to take the cohanim off first? ;)

You mean the dead bodies...cohanim, leviim or yisroelim.

I am aware of this restriction and respect everyone beliefs, but why a cohen who flies to another destination on another airline will not even dare to ask the airline that the caskets will be unloaded before the jetway is connected. But with ELAL they can and will get their way

I remember flying on ELAL and a full B747 had to wait for 15 minutes for the jetway to be connected while the airconditioning was off. It was September and it was stuffy. I do not consider myself anti dati but I cannot understand that.

I have been delayed once in O'Hare because Health America was called to check on a sick person to take them and give them help before everyone, but this is something that I can understnad, but sorry not this.

As this thread is about the airport and not El Al specifically, it is more appropriate for he Middle East Travel forum. Please follow it there.

I find it hard to believe that the swaying back and forth of the jetway, while the kid with the joystick tries to navigate it to the airplane . . .. that this game is all just a delay tactic to unload coffins . .

This bit about the Kohanim and caskets is bull. A Kohan will NOT fly on a plane with a casket and those who care ask in advance SO, the explanation that they are waiting for caskets to be unloaded to protect Kohanim has no credibility. It is just another anti-dati statement! Must that too be brought to this forum?

Did you read former chief rabbi Eliahu Bakshi-Doron's warning that the impurity of the dead will spread throughout the terminal if a plane carrying a dead body is attached to a boarding bridge?

Is he anti dati?

Haaretz - Fears of ritual impurity at Terminal 3 (http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/features/fears-of-ritual-impurity-at-terminal-3-1.139175)
The new boarding bridges at Ben-Gurion 2000 - Terminal 3, are causing more than a few headaches for halakhic (Jewish legal) authorities. During his very first tour of the terminal-under-construction two years ago, former chief Sephardi rabbi Eliahu Bakshi-Doron warned of a complicated halakhic problem: If a plane carrying a dead body is attached to a boarding bridge, the impurity of the dead will spread throughout the whole terminal. This problem is somewhat reminiscent of the dispute years ago over the flight path above the Holon cemetery.

a cohen only has a problem when its the body of a dead Jewish person, and since only ElAl has special compartments in its cargo hold = a cohen shouldnt fly anyone but ElAl to TLV.

The chances of a Jewish body being transported say from ORD to EWR is probably very slim. Id say most people are usually buried in the same city/country that they died in except for those who want to be buried in EY. I dont know if a cohen must ask before boarding any flight even say ORD-EWR if theres a dead Jewish person aborad, and even if he asked would they know if the dead body is of a Jewish person?

It seems people are saying this delay is a constant occurance , yet Im sure every flight to TLV doesnt have a body in the hold.

The dead body thing was a joke. I mean, it's not a joke to cohanim who actually care about it. But in the context of this thread, it was purely a tongue-in-cheek "explanation" for the OP's complaint.

I am plane side for LY landings, at least once or twice a week, and in most cases the jet way is moving within a minute of the plane reaching its parking spot and connected shortly after. That is not to say that there are no delays in some cases but the OP's observation is just not correct

They ask things of EL AL because they can get it. I'd love to ask everyone in the world to pay for my stuff and give me money, but no one will do that. My dad will. They know they can get something from LY, so they can ask. There's also the reason that craz brought up that there's more of a concern when flying LY.

Agreed - I've never noticed particularly long delays at TLV

I was there today for LY002. The plane was connected within 2 minutes
