I'll be in AKL for ten days in June and won't have a car. It means relying on public transport to get out and about. I quite fancy the idea of exploring beyond the city. Any helpful tips?

Have you thought about a day trip to somewhere like Wellington?
Both Air New Zealand & Jetstar sell this route from $69 oneway, often can be on sale from $39-$59. Its a great day trip out of AKL, only takes an hour each way.

Waiheke Island? You need to catch a ferry there.

also consider the $59 standby fare with Grabaseat on Air New Zealand

other than that, many organize Road Trips through www.CouchSurfing.org

Auckland itself is pretty boring

Rangotito island by ferry is also a good half day outing. You can do some walks or take a 4wd tour You can also take a day coach tour to gloworm caves. There and back in a day or if you have an overnight go to rotorua

Definitely spend sometime at the auckland museum.
